to not let the metre reader in?

Bathing DS's (5 and 2) about 7.30pm, bang bang bang on door. I ignored, again, then again. Got kids out of bath, peered down stairs and could see uniformed man through window and thought it might be a PSCO (due to insistent nature) Answered and it was the metre reader, I said not now, not convenient (had youngest in my arms in a bath towel so was obvious why), he was most put out, almost arsey as to why not etc. WIBU to not let him in?

The metre isn't ours but it's on our property therefore the need to knock and ask for access, otherwise they'd just batter the door down anytime they liked. So whether it's 'ours' or not is neither here nor there and it's up to the individual if they want to let someone in to read it without a set appt.

Just goes to show that it depends which way the wind is blowing on here. I started a thread sayibg the same and was comprehensively roasted and bollocked

EOn fuck me off.

They email me nagging for meter readings and the same day or the next day, before I've even had a chance to do it, a meter reader turns up. Every time.

It enrages me. Why the fuck do they bother to ask me?!

hackmum · 28/11/2013 09:00

I think everyone should read dosgmom's post.

It has never occurred to me not to let the meter reader in. They're here to read the meter. It's their job. The utility company requires them to do it so that they know how much gas/electricity householders are using. I find some of the attitudes expressed on here very odd, not to say paranoid.

It's about time the companies made proper appts with people. It seems such a waste of time to send people out on the off chance.

If anyone wants to come into my house, they can make an appointment.

It's not my fault that meter reading companies are shit employers.

AgentProvocateur · 28/11/2013 10:45

What hacking said. Are you as obstructive to other people doing their jobs? And all you people asking for "appointments" - you'd be the first to com

AgentProvocateur · 28/11/2013 10:47

Sorry - first to complain about the higher prices that would be charged to cover the cost of extra staff to make appointments at every house in the UK.

lilyaldrin · 28/11/2013 10:48

I'm obstructive to anyone who wants to come into my home or buy/sell anything on the doorstep.

Much better than NPower though who never read a meter or bothered to bill you until several hundred pounds were owed...

At least with EoN if I know I've had the request for a reading and I have not responded I know a reader is likely to turn up.

OP - YANBU for not letting the meter reader in as you were in the middle of doing something else and it wasn't convenient. However, I would always let the meter reader in if I was at home and there was no particular reason why not (such as Christmas tree blocking meter cupboard!).

Our meter arrived one morning this week just as I was sorting out kids coats and shoes for school / nursery. I'd also just had some workmen arrive who I was also trying to sort out. I let him read the meter and he was gone in less than a minute and said a polite "thank you" as he left. It was easier to do it there and then than refuse and for him to have to come back.
