To wonder who would call a child Elektra?

Heard this when out yesterday. Didn't the original Elektra want to kill her mother?
Also the mother (real one, not the Greek one) had the table manners of a famished farmhand.

These judgey pants are terribly tight!

On the name boards, the name Lillith crops up quite often. I am always Shock Don't people look into the associations when deciding? Well, if you want to name your dd after a child-eating she-demon, it's up to you, I s'pose.....

fluffiphlox · 25/11/2013 17:10

Yes weekend that's the joke about Frasier's ex-wife isn't it?

I like Elektra.

I know of a Kraken.

WilsonFrickett · 25/11/2013 17:13

So long as it's not a Phil McKraken boba

OttilieKnackered · 25/11/2013 17:19

I used to look after a little girl called Elektra. I suppose she'd be about 12 now.

She was absolutely gorgeous. And her mum was lovely as well.

I loved it on her.

GhostsInSnow · 25/11/2013 17:24

Quite like Electra/Elektra, still a world better than the Hendrix and Geezer in our local paper last week.

gorionine · 25/11/2013 17:27

Jaqueline Wilson?

FyreFly · 25/11/2013 17:27

It's unusual, but in a classic, actually-a-real-name way. Not something I'd use personally, but it's not my child!

I've always had a soft spot for Auberon Blush - here's hoping I never have a boy!

stinkingbishop · 25/11/2013 17:31

Well, I know a fair few Juliets, and life wasn't exactly a bed of roses (by any other name) for her either. And isn't there some sort of footballing/designery sort of couple (can't remember the name for the life of me) with a Romeo?!

womma · 25/11/2013 17:35

I heard a woman calling her toddler 'Coltrane' a few weeks ago. It almost made my ears bleed.

swanningby · 25/11/2013 17:37

I think it's a bit pretentious, TBH.

squoosh · 25/11/2013 17:40

Well I think Coltrane is quite cool name for a jazz fan to give their son.

Whathaveiforgottentoday · 25/11/2013 17:50

I like Coltrane for a name.
I've always found Candida an odd name even though the name is a fairly old name I'd rather not have the same name as a fungal infection!
Shame as its nice name without its association.

MrsAMerrick · 25/11/2013 17:54

I once came across a baby called Lillith. The mum said she liked the name after ciming across it on "Frasier" (sp?). Didn't point out to her why that character was called Lillith in the first place Wink

justmyview · 25/11/2013 18:10

How about Roxanne, spelt "Rocksan"?

MinionDave · 25/11/2013 18:11

First Coltrane that popped into my head was Robbie I must admit Grin

I know a Hendrix, I did Hmm when I heard it but of course I didn't say anything. Each to their own!

Caitlin17 · 25/11/2013 18:12

Elektra is a great name, although I prefer Phaedra. I know a Phaedra and used to live next door to a Cassandra. All wonderful.

bundaberg · 25/11/2013 18:13

I also know a Lilith. Who is also lovely!

bundaberg · 25/11/2013 18:14

and yes, her mother knows the story behind the name.

Bettercallsaul1 · 25/11/2013 18:15

Yes, I'm amazed that people don't look more into the history or literary associations of a name before inflicting it on their offspring.

Mind you, there are exceptions luckily - Cordelia is quite popular (as she deserves to be) but I have yet to hear of a real life Goneril or Regan! Obviously, in some cases, adultery, poisoning your sister, driving your father to his death etc does actually put people off!

Caitlin17 · 25/11/2013 18:15

I knew a Lillias which is a Scottish variant of Lilleth.

heartshape · 25/11/2013 18:18

had an angel in my dd class , and heard jet being shouted at in the shop :)

fluffiphlox · 25/11/2013 18:22

Hasn't some so-called celeb called a male child Phèdre or Phaedra? I think most of these are fairly pretentious. Have any of the parents read any Greek drama or even 17th century French drama? I mean I ask you! Grin

Have also heard tell of a Tennessee.

A girl, not the playwright.
