Encouraging right handedness in toddler

My 2 year has been showing a preference to using his left hand so I have been encouraging him to use his right hand by passing him thing to his right hand, kicking balls to his right side etc. I know it is very bad to force right handedness and I would never do that.

I would prefer him to be right handed as I know it is easier for general everyday living and also I have family members/friends who have said that it is more difficult to be a left handed when it comes to music eg learning guitars upside down if there is no left handed one to use.

Would I be unreasonable to ask his nursery to also encourage this?

Are you fucking serious OP? Jesus. Let him use whatever hand comes naturally to him. Anything else is ridiculous. I am a leftie and it is no disadvantage, other than occasionally struggling to use a ton opener.
Honestly I find it shocking that you could think it is appropriate to encourage a child to go against this. Why??? Handedness is not nurture, it's nature. Children have developed stammers and serious psychological problems because of this kind of thing.

This subject is on TWS tomorrow morning Hmm

BatmanLovesIckyBarry · 26/11/2013 11:14

Aaaaaand... guess what The Wright Stuff is talking tomorrow? Grin

OP, I understand that you have good intentions, but it's unfair on your DS to try to influence what isn't coming naturally. Leave him be.

Horsemad · 26/11/2013 11:25

Hmm, more proof that TWS read MN! Grin

Can't think up their own topics. Perhaps OP was one of their 'researchers'. Hmm

burberree · 26/11/2013 11:28

hahahahahaha i thought it sounded a bit fake now you mention it Grin - if TWS start on about Cobain and Hendrix we will know for sure!

Oh ffs! Why is The Wright Stuff so chuffing lazy??? Employ some proper researchers for a change!

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 26/11/2013 11:39

It is my lifes ambition for one of my mn posts to be read out on there (or maybe quoted in the DM) Grin

GuybrushThreepwoodMP · 26/11/2013 12:43

Lazy researcher. Although we should be sympathetic. He / she was probably hoping to get a job on a proper programme.

gamerchick · 26/11/2013 13:47

It's true as well.. so do they do a thread or just trawl for topics on here.. or both? Hmm

They've got KH on as well.. she's like frigging margarine.

Burburree, there are a couple of bits and pieces which need adjustment, as well as stringing a guitar upside down, but dh says it's small stuff and not a problem.

He doesn't understand why anyone would bother though. Just use the left for chords and the right for strum/plucking.

DoesZingBumpLookBigInThis · 27/11/2013 15:23

Not reading thread, but about the guitar - to make any ordinary acoustic guitar left-handed just have to re-string it "upside-down"
dead easy.

DD is 20 months and although she is using both hands she is showing left-handed tendencies.
wouldn't bother me.
you can get loads of things made for left handed people nowadays, from scissors to tools.

I actually think at this age it is way to early to know which hands will be preferred.
best to wait till older.
