People keep getting on at me for not teaching my 3yo ds to say "I" and not "my", we also have an "armbow" and not an "elbow" and tend to find things "hunder" the table rather than "under" I find all of these really cute and think as soon as they've gone I've got none of my baby left, aibu to not correct him every single time!!??? I like it!! What little things do all your little ones say that make u smile each time Smile

Dd used to say samsigs for sandwiches, piggins for pigeons, hostipal for hospital and Father Christmas was "Missy". Fire engines were "front engines". It took me ages to figure that one out!

Tikkamasala · 25/11/2013 21:17

Err jam donut how are any of those mispronunciations "northernisms"? Hmm what a weird comment on an otherwise lovely thread

missmapp · 25/11/2013 21:17

Ds2 is 6, but yesterday he was asking whether the song on the radio was by Ollie the smurf or Robilie Williams - Fab!! ( it was Ollie murs !!)

jeanmiguelfangio · 25/11/2013 21:21

My DD is too little for the talking, but these are so sweet!! I love how they become part of family life.
I'm 27 but my parents still use cardygardygee for cardigan and umberolly for umbrella that were mine!
My step-brother is 18 and from him we have instant Van Gogh and pinch black, oh and the two very famous songs Saturday night beaver and like a vermin
My step-sister is 16 and we have arachnophobia for acne (bless she got it all messed up)
We were on holiday, and were on a train ride, and the little girl behind said "mudge up mummy" mudge is now used all the time. Also zizz, which means cheese

Caitlin17 · 25/11/2013 21:43

Not a mispronounciation as such, but a saying " you know what colour a peabug is"

A peabug is what one of our neighbours called slaers, you know those revolting things you find under stones.

We didn't know this, quite how the conversation with a 4 year old got round to this I can't recall, but on being asked, well what colour is a peabug ? DS replied indignantly " you know what colour a peabug is"

We use it in any situation where one of us claims not to know about something ( usually something they've been told several times by the other )

Hissy · 25/11/2013 22:15

We had vaninna for vanilla, eyeshine for when the sun was in his eyes. Axdeedent for accident.

Had to remind his dad thatDS couldn't say his Fs when DS came out with "Daddy 'art"

Mamos for tomato, bubbush for bubble bath. Oo-gader for helicopter.

He really is the only kid - probably in the county- that has his name, so explaining to him that people shared names was repeatedly hilarious as he thought he knew everyone!

We still have bibs and bobs for tea sometimes. Even at nearly 8.

I've not corrected him once. I miss them all. A notepad is a great idea. I love this thread!

Cutitup · 25/11/2013 22:18

My fave is "sleeping tooty" for sleeping beauty.

I still love mini-beasts for any insect.

Out of the mouths of babes. Too cute.

SuedeEffectPochette · 25/11/2013 23:17

I was in my 20s before I realised chimney was not chimley (seriously, and I have an Oxbridge degree too). I didn't believe it and had to look it up in a dictionary.

sausageandorangepickle · 25/11/2013 23:27

we have a 'flat cap' (cat flap) in our 'back front door'. Everything in the past tense has a -ted or -ded ending (walkded, eated, hurted, sitted,) and happended yesertday. Whether it was 5 minutes or 3 weeks ago!

toobreathless · 25/11/2013 23:38

Love these!

My 2.6 yr old says 'huggle' instead of hug or cuddle which I love :)

BratinghamPalace · 26/11/2013 04:30

Cookie market for supermarket

Jolella for Cinderella

Burlaxing for relaxing

Gosh, so many. Thank you for making me smile and my little stroll down memory lane!

Admiraltea · 26/11/2013 04:44

Aaahh...memories of grumpy toddler telling big sister she was "toady unseptible" (totally unacceptable)
She can still be very toady. Grin

georgie22 · 26/11/2013 06:26

From our 3 year old dd we have pa and da-da for grandpa and grandma, pooter (computer), tap tap (lap top), domato (tomato), humbry (hungry). Sooo cute! Love her to bits!

I say the word correctly to her but never directly correct her.

jamdonut · 26/11/2013 19:49

Tikkamasala Well obviously those examples aren't "northernisms" !!!

I accept I didn't put it very well(was very tired). I was just adding the point that that is another thing that we have to correct....eg a Yorkshire way of saying something like...I don't know....for instance..."They're good" comes out as "Them's good". It is the local accent ,but we are told to pull people up on it (even each other!!). It makes me feel uneasy ,to be honest.

I did say that it is cute when they are little, and there are many things my own children have said which we use even now. I didn't expect to be branded as 'weird' and somehow 'ruining' the thread just because I was genuinely pointing something out.Hmm

catgirl1976 · 26/11/2013 20:30

We have "noozing" for snoozing

"pooter" for computer and

"hangcoaters" for coat hangers

They make me melt :)

jollygoose · 26/11/2013 20:35

not at all u, keep a note of them because you will forget. My ds best one is heliplane am always saying aeroplane or helicopter but he says no heliplane.

lovelilies · 26/11/2013 20:36

Dd had loads, but aged 7 she said 'pipples' in class (rather than nipples- human body lesson) and was mortified that I'd never corrected her....Grin

carolinecordery · 27/11/2013 00:41

I love DS's 'bud-bud' (peanut butter) and 'hot-tee-tot' (helicopter).

Hushabyelullaby · 27/11/2013 08:30

my DD says ambleance instead of ambulance and lemonlade instead of lemonade. She's not a toddler either, she's 6.

Hushabyelullaby · 27/11/2013 08:36

just remembered 2 more, she says elerbow instead of elbow and headford instead of forehead. We correct her every time but we'll sometimes say elerbow when talking about banging our funny bone for instance. It's done in a funny way though so she knows that we're using her word for the proper word elbow.

PassTheSherry · 27/11/2013 10:11

We had:

DVD...V...D...V?
Where's the shontrol
Twapped

And...Hickory Dickory Cock

Lamu · 27/11/2013 10:36

Our NDN Andy is referred to as "Addy Daddy". And the one on the other side "Ducaa Daddy". Dd2.3 started to shout "Addy Daddy" reapeatedly when we were at the supermarket a few weeks back. I hadn't noticed he was queuing at the next till. My previous efforts at explaining that Duncan/ Andy was actually X and Y's daddy have obviously been in vain as she now thinks she has multiple daddies. Blush

Ham69 · 27/11/2013 10:50

I love these!
I don't even correct my DD, aged 4, when she calls hooks 'hookers'.
Was a bit embarrassing when we bought her some hooks in a shop for her bedroom and she declared out loud that daddy needed some hookers in his bedroom for his birthday. Still couldn't bring myself to correct her though!

SomethingkindaOod · 27/11/2013 10:56

DS used to say Pisscetty for spaghetti quite a lot. He was never allowed to ask for spaghetti bolognese when we ate out... Grin
Pippo-Optimus for Hippopotamus and Squee Squee for biscuit (complete with big puppy eyes!) he's 13 and still for fun uses Squee Squee when he's after a treat of some description..
DD1 used Looloo to describe anything she didn't recognise and Iseem for ice acream.
DD2's pronunciation of her siblings names has become the norm here Grin
Our school did try to correct Northernisms, but it's an uphill task when we're in a part of the North that still has many people using Lancashire Dialect as part of everyday speech!

Filimou · 27/11/2013 11:13

My DS is currently being taught Christmas songs at nursery.........he has a bit of an issue with random 'F's, and instead of lying in a manger, baby Jesus is Flying in a manger.
Also '5 Christmas puddings in a bakers shop' is '5 christmas puddings in a bacon shop'.
He also seems to occasionally substitute the words baby Jesus with 'Fireman Sam'
It is so cute
