Perhaps MN should just have a thread entitled "Shameless Begging" and have done with it. "Bad Wannabe Novelists" could be another. There could be subsets of the latter: "with twins" and "without twins". Subsets of "Shameless Begging" would be unlimited.

IME the Christmas Appeal isn't a trolling opportunity. Usually the nominees are nominated because they have a full posting history and have been helpful to other people.

As soon as the nomination thread went up, I had a little flurry of inbox messages from people I'd never heard of, making friendly chit chat and telling me how much they loved my posts

I must be an old cynic but I love the begging threads - they're so obvious and you can have extra fun playing mumsnet bingo on them, spotting the usual phrases etc

Even more fun to be had when you next see said posters on threads posting about the eleventy million Christmas presents they've got for their children or forgetting themselves and alluding to their MacBook

I actually don't mind the occassional troll- one that simply posts a blatantly goady thread sometimes can be entertaining.

Ones who dupe people into feeling sorry for them, sending cash or investing time into "helping" with a problem are harder to spot i think.

i've spotted a few MNers starting threads by realing off "in-jokes" and abbreviations to prove they are not a troll. i'm fairly knew and don't have a clue about alot of the abbreviations though.

re the appeal - anybody can nominate anybody for any reason. So it only takes people nominating each other (or even themselves) . posting history, the fact you've 'been nominated' - gives no security. You just have to see it as a nice thing to do to send someone a christmas pressie. Which it is.

Indeedy - re the Xmas appeal. Its not immune to scroungers. But if you only send what you want to/waht you can afford, I reckon the odds are at least 90% that get a genuine person.
