Boots' 'Feel Good' advert?!

I confess I hadn't thought about this, but my partner pointed it out.

The Boots Christmas advert. Nice sentiment etc., but who thought it appropriate to put it to Bronski Beat's Smalltown Boy?!

1984 song about being beaten and rejected for being gay.

'Run away, run away...' 'Cry boy, cry ,cry, cry...' Etc.

Perhaps there is reason and logic...

Is Boots being unreasonable?....

We've had this before.
Someone kindly printed out the lrics to Smalltown Boy.

The song isn't about a gay boy

The song is about a young man being rejected.

The Video shows a young male being beaten up for eyeing up another male at the swimming pool.
Jimmy Sommerville was openly gay in the 1980s.

The song is flipping marvellous.

Catsize · 23/11/2013 17:53

Sorry, didn't realise it had already been done.

According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica that is Wikipedia, it is about family rejection for being homosexual, homophobia etc. and the video is depicting Jimmy Sommerville's own experiences.

Must confess, I was six at the time it came out, but my partner was 19, and has a better recollection of the song's meaning than I do.

is it a big deal?
I am sure Morrissey didn't have crap from john lewis in mind when he sang about getting what he wanted for once either..

ToysRLuv · 23/11/2013 19:00

For what it is worth, that is what me and my DH were sure it was about (being practically disowned and thrown out of home for being gay). We were Shock at the ad. Shit judgement from them.

ToysRLuv · 23/11/2013 19:03

(we have a 12 year age gap, so I was 4 when it came out, and DH was 16 Smile )

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/11/2013 19:09

Ah, you see. The advert is making you remember it.
So it's working.

Good/Bad. You're talking about it.

ToysRLuv · 23/11/2013 19:27

Sort of. I didn't remember it was boots Grin I buy most things in the local supermarket round the corner or on-line (e-bay, Amazon), so the ad's totally wasted on me.

Feminine · 23/11/2013 19:46

The song is too deep and clever to waste on BOOTS Christmassy tat!

although Jimmy obviously didn't think so.

Did he write it?

FunnyRunner · 23/11/2013 20:08

I really like the advert and love the song within the advert. Works for me Smile

grants1000 · 23/11/2013 20:48

Fuck yes, those packaged box sets of bath/food/make up etc crap from Boots, same shite every year. My DH is fully aware if he ever gets me one I'll shove it up his nose. Especially a Soap N Glory one, hideous.

However, I do like the divert, grumpy teenager is nice and can say thanks whilst sprinting & mumbling from beneath a hoody, god forbid anyone actually sees him!
