To hate noise?

Dd has Horrid Henry DVD on. It's not even that loud, but I don't want to hear it. Dh always talks loudly, I have to tell him to talk quietly.

Even long conversations assault my ears. Tv's, music, I don't like any of them. I just looooong for silence. Is this an age thing?

I know how you feel. People shouting into mobile phones; loud music in restaurants and shops; teenagers on buses shouting at the tops of their voices............. drives me mad.

I've always been like this OP. I have the TV on so low other people say they can't hear it properly. My OH wants a big speaker system set up for the TV. I'm hoping he'll forget. Lots of noise from lots of different angles makes me feel stressed out. I have no idea why! I rarely listen to music as it just seems like unnecessary noise, yet I enjoy the company of other people and would definitely say I'm an extrovert.

Who knows what that's all about!

I gate the deafening noise of buses and cars when I'm walking through town. I hope somebody invents the silent engine soon!

I thought that was only me. I hate that I can't hear dd talking over the noise of them.

I am the same. I was very surprised when I found out not everybody is and wondered how on earth people could tolerate loud music when working etc. I never realised how stressed and irritable having the TV on in the background growing up made me until I lived in my own place and didn't have it on except to watch stuff! I've been a much calmer person since.

I've been known to regularly walk out of shops if their music is too unpleasant or loud. I hate it if it's above a certain level in restaurants and pubs and often avoid places with wooden floors because everything is so much louder. I get extremely irritated by the sound of other people's music on public transport whether played out loud or over shitty headphones. And don't get me started on neighbours - we are finally at a point in our lives when at long long long last we can afford a detached property.

I also don't like it when people talk too loudly or shout, I feel like I am constantly telling my children to keep it down when they are just, well, being children.

I do love music but when it's on, it's on for me to actively listen to it. I find it hard to work or concentrate with music on unless it's fairly bland classical or the task I'm doing is seriously mundane, or driving unless it's central London or something fiddly. Same with the TV, I watch maybe a few hours a week of my favourite programmes (not too loud!) and that is that.

As a previous poster said - I'm also quite sociable and very chatty - I just don't like being bombarded with sound and in particular sound I haven't chosen. I'm also great at multitasking but extra sound just seems to make my brain turn to mush.

I think it's a form of hypersensitivity.

This is why I love my ear plugs! My life has been so my nicer since I got them

Me either, dh likes the radio on in the orning but turns it off when I come downstairs as the sound of it combined with children talking and eating makes me ragefull!

But the problem with earplugs is you can't hear anything at all.

Dh and I trying to have a conversation and dd decides to sing. This makes me irritable. She seems to shout so loud she makes me jump

I'm totally with you, am suffering bloody Spongebob now before bed and I want to rip out his annoying spongey vocal chords . The different music/ different angles thing makes me leave places too.

everything sounds loud. even when DC eats a marshmallow it sounds crunchy!!!!!

you cant even hear birds singing any more, all you hear are shouting/'PERSONAL' headphones, constant chatter and loud music.

and I walk out of shops too if theres music blaring. and coffee shops and everywhere else.

I don't think I have mysphonia. I think I'm just a grumpy old bag!

Look up 'highly sensitive person'. Not sure if it's a 'real', diagnosable thing, but describes me. Loud noises, bright lights, people or things touching me - they can be almost painful. Also makes me really grumpy and scrambles my brain.

I do not like lots of noise- never have done.

The noise motorbikes and cars with big engines make has me on edge. I live on a through road and I tense up each time vehicles come speeding down.

Do not get me started on drivers who play loud music in their cars or people who have their headphones turned up to the highest volume.

I never put the radio or TV on in the mornings before work. I much prefer to hear myself think. Dh likes to listen to music on his phone any time of day. I have had to compromise.

One poster mentioned bright lights. When sleeping my room has to be blacked out. I cannot bear any form of light creeping in.

Oh yes, me too. Really sociable but can't bear loads of noise and rarely have the tv on. There is an incredibly loud busker who inhabits the underpass near my work and causes me physical pain.

I especially hate busy pubs or our local pizza express which is really clattery.

Which reminds me, one of my top pet hates is when they tip cutlery or clatter plates in restaurants. Goes right through me.

I hear you OP I think it's happened since I've had DCs. Mostly it's kids tv that hurts my ears, especially anything with annoying American girls or the theme tune to My Parents Are aliens. Kids parties in big halls with lots of loud screaming is another thing that I just cannot bear, it actually makes me feel dizzy and sick.

I don't think it's necessarily an age thing, I'm 25 and despise noise.

I really hate certain types of noise, for example I hate empty cans knocking against each other. It's like nails down a chalk board to me. I hate people talking at the same time as the TV.

Me too! I hate radios and if people put one on I just can't think ! I also get stressed!i also think its a type of sensitivity;I have also read about highly sensitive people and it makes sense to me. The book re this recommended regular quiet days ;,to think and just be. I love sounds of river and sea and I have them on my I phone to drown out other sounds. I too am sociable and wd be described as extrovert but I think that how a person renew S them self is an indicator of what works for you wether you are seen as extrovert or otherwise ; ie if quiet renews you then that's fine. Silence is to me one of the most precious things going and people are surprised to Hear me say that as think I'm extrovert but being quiet keeps me sane ; noise the opposite; a day in a big city and my dh can tell I'm all off kilter in myself.you are not alone and it's not an age thing . I find noise very intrusive and I cantcunderstand why folk think its ok to inflict it on others!

Definitely like this since having kids. The assualt of constant crying/shouting/needing... I just yearn for peace and quiet. Used to love the radio but it's just a source of frustration unless I'm on my own as can't hear it. My real bugbear is radio and tv and kids at the same time... too much noise. And why oh why have the telly on if no-one's watching it? No-one can just 'be' anymore.... I have officially turned into my mother...
