Please advise me I was made redundant two months ago , problem is we just

Bought a house , I have had to take a temp job and it's not very well paid! I'm grateful that I have this job , I drop kids to childminders then park car then have to walk 1.4 miles in the morn to work ,then walk 1.4 miles back there in the eve , then collect car then drive to pick kids up.

The reason is the parking would cost me £100 a month and then my childcare bills on top, I'm thinking I should take the job and then after Xmas look for something more local Aibu that I have taken a temporary contract to then leave before the end of the contract I just feel so bad.

In the holidays I will be earning £22 per day , so therefore I'm starting this job and taking Xmas off because otherwise it's not worth me working, did tell the agency this.

We need the money dp can not afford it all on his own it would be tight I feel bad that the kids will not really have much for Xmas.

Are you sure that it's "not worth" earning £22 per day?

It sounds as if you could really do with having that £110 a week.

You haven't said how far you drive to the childminder's but 1.4 miles walk (on pavements I assume, not through fields) is about half an hour. Lots of people have commutes of over half an hour, and you've done well to figure out the cheapest way to do it.

yadnbu to look for another job while you have a temporary contract.

a temp contract is just that, temporary. Easy for the employer to end if it doesn't work out and I wouldn't hesitate to leave if something better came along.

YANBU to look for another job and possibly end this contract early if you do find something more suitable. However YABU to think that a 1.4 mile commute is excessive, even if you have to walk. My round trip to work is 90 miles. Yes, I do drive but I probably have a 1 mile walk from the car to the office when I get there. I would LOVE to have a job where I could walk to work. Maybe you could use/borrow a bike to speed up the journey?

Um, not sure what you need advice on? You are earning some money (good) albeit not as much as you would hope for (bad). The company (presumably) is fine with you not working over the school holidays so you have no worries there.

Don't worry about leaving before the end of the contract (Unless it's somewhere you really really want to work again) - that's very common, and you may well not find another job straight away, so will see it out till the end anyway

I understand that you are disappointed about not giving the DC as much as you would have wanted for Christmas, but sounds like they will have something? Concentrate on doing what you can for free/cheap - lots of sites out there with tips.

Bird in the hand. I wouldnt throw away a job paying actual money in your situwtion. the other job might fire you after a week. Look for something local once the contract ends, you will get better references. A walk each day is good for your stress levels, you may be surprised how much you miss it. I used to do a mile and a half just dropping the kids at school, I have never been so thin since :(

Contract will have a notice period in it should you (or the employer) want to terminate the agreement, so even if it is a fixed term contract you can leave before the end of the fixed period by giving notice (you may need to work the notice period, or you may get an option of leaving sooner).

No harm keeping an eye out for other jobs. Employers will be expecting that someone they hire who is already in work will need to give notice to their current employer.

So first thing to do is find out how much notice you need to give, then look for other jobs if you really feel that you are best changing to something else. However do consider how things may change at your current job, could it become permanent, do you enjoy it, is pay likely to increase over time, are there any perks/benefits offered as part of the package like staff discount, low cost family activities, good employer contribution to pension.

Of course they will expect you to be looking for other jobs if the job is just temporary. If you find a permanent job before the temp job is supposed to end just give notice (usually around a week for a temp job), if you don't find anything at least you are in work and they may extend the contract or give you something more permanent.

Thank you everyone ,yes that distance is nothing really 1/2 hour won't kill me and yes it will help reduce the stress levels.

I just feel bad looking for something else more permanent and local but I'm sure they will expect that.

Oh it's all very well people saying 30 minutes isn't long to walk

But if you finish at 5.30, then walk in the pissing rain , wind, snow in January to pick your kids up at 6pm it's not much fun

Are there any cul de sacs you could park down op? Park & ride schemes? Bus route ?

15 minutes to aftersch club then 15 minutes with kids
I've got pissed on every night this week

I do it too (which is why I'd missed that OP even considered it a problem as I assumed it was such a short distance as to be normal).

My DC also walk/cycle that distance to school.

We all have good waterproofs.

Plenty of DC's friends and my colleagues have similar distances to travel and choose to drive. IMO people nowadays are too ready to jump in the car - walking is almost a lost art!

£22/day after costs isn't bad at all.
