I've just been informed of this. AngelCare baby monitors without rigid protective cord covers have been recalled. The advice is not to use them until they have been repaired.

Cant sleep just wrap it under the slats and around the legs so there's no excess wire.

mine works fine, its only gone off a few times when ds has moved right to the end of the bed and has laid sideways

SecondStarToTheRight · 22/11/2013 14:49

Mine is threaded through the slats too.

Just been on angelcare uk and if you email your name & address to [email protected] they will send you a kit when they become available next week.

Hope that helps someone.

What worries me though is, when these babies were being strangled and stopped breathing, why didnt the movement sensor alarm go off?

Cantsleep · 22/11/2013 22:54

I think judging by what ds2 did toour monitor if the wires are pulled a connection somewhere breaks disabling the sensor. We were lucky as he pulled it and broke it then I found him awake. He could just have easily broken it then got tangled and the alarm wouldn't have gone off.

WestieMamma · 22/11/2013 23:04

That is a very good point hb1976

I love our AngelCare monitor. We have a cot with a slatted base so the wire is completely out of the way feeding down on to the floor. They are like anything - you have to use them properly. You wouldn't put DC in a high chair and only strap in one arm.

We have also found it really reliable - it went off twice, both times when DC was breathing in a strange shallow way. First time was at 4 months and baby took a few seconds to rouse. I was so glad we had the monitor as it always made me wonder afterwards if it could have turned from shallow breathing into stopping / 'forgetting' breathing.

Stupid phone, I cant access that link

MoominsYonisAreScary · 22/11/2013 23:23

Email sent

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 22/11/2013 23:28

I heard about the recall from here : Recall UK
They say on that link they have contacted Angelcare and asked if they will be recalling their product in the UK. Once they get a response they will post the update on there.

hb1976 · 22/11/2013 23:30

Surely then there should be an alarm that goes off if the movement sensor is disconnected unless the parent has disabled it in 'settings'?

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 22/11/2013 23:31

Sorry - somehow missed the Angelcare post.

Do you not think the us canada versipns maybe are made differently? It does clearly state how to connect the monitor on the manual!

MoominsYonisAreScary · 23/11/2013 04:47

No its to do with the cord and how long it is.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 23/11/2013 04:57

Maybe the sensors did go off after the baby stopped breathing, or if it's ripped away from the pad it disables it and it didn't go off.

Or the parents stopped using the mat but didn't remove it from under the mattress. I sometimes turn mine off if ds has rolled off it.

Whatever happened if the wires are a strangulation risk they should do something about it. It doesn't matter if the monitor goes off once they've wrapped it around their neck and stopped breathing.
