to tell you all that AngelCare baby monitors have been recalled?

I've just been informed of this. AngelCare baby monitors without rigid protective cord covers have been recalled. The advice is not to use them until they have been repaired.

We have one and thought the wire was very long so we wrapped it all round back of furniture and around the slates under the cot, don't see an issue with it now, it's all well out of the way. Tbh it's just common sense

MoominsYonisAreScary · 22/11/2013 00:24

Its ok saying its just common sense, but not every body will think about it. The same could be said about lots of things

silverten · 22/11/2013 00:44

Oh I got all excited then... I have one of these and could never work out how to work the bloody thing, the instructions are so complicated. We kept getting it wrong, it kept waking up DD and we gave up in the end in desperation, so it is really just a very expensive basic monitor.

And now the display on the parent unit is knackered because I made the mistake of moving it from its stand when we went away for the weekend Sad.

MoominsYonisAreScary · 22/11/2013 00:49

I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it complicated to use.

WestieMamma · 22/11/2013 06:43

My Ikea cot doesn't have slats, it has a solid base so the wires have to come out from under the mattress between the side bars. We tried to minimise the risk by having them at the far end and as invisible and tight as possible. I can see how a sharp eyed, determined little bugger could get to them. My husband took it out last night and we won't be using it anymore. I'm really disappointed with the company's response.

God - I've got two of these. One or DS and one for ou new baby

I'm going to try and work out who he relevant H&S people ar in the UK and alert them

Rather than then specifically saying he monitor is OK, I suspect they haven't picked up on this but I think it is a total disgrace that angelcare are not doing this voluntarily

Sizzlesthedog · 22/11/2013 06:56

I have one of these.

I gaffer taped the excess cord to the skirting board, but will get the kit they mention.

Only recently I realised I could use the monitor without the sensor pad. I didn't need that function and it kept alarming even with a thin mdf board under it.

Works like a normal monitor now. I find the instruction manual so complicated. It didn't say it can be used without the sensor pad, but you can unplug the wire from the nursery unit where it says sensor pad, and it works like a normal monitor.

silverton I have done the same several times. You need to " re pair " the units so they find each other.

Turn the parent unit on, and the nursery unit. Press the clear knob under the angels halo on the front of the unit, let it beep. And it should be fine. The parent unit will clear to normal screen in a few seconds.

Thanks for sharing this OP.
can't believe their UK response! Won't be buying any more of their products in future!
Has anyone got address or email for who we need to ask for repair kit please?

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 22/11/2013 07:04

I've tweeted the UK and the US twitter accounts

I've looked online and there is a site for ordering the parts but only for the US and Canada

DontCallMeDaughter · 22/11/2013 07:24

I think it's pretty obvious that there's a risk with these, we have one and we're careful. But it yanks my chain that the recall is only in the US/Canada.

Wishfulmakeupping · 22/11/2013 07:41

Posted on the angel care uk FB page there's quite a few posts on there maybe they will have to come up with a better response if they realise people aren't going away?

Andcake · 22/11/2013 07:47

I love my angelcare but have always been a it paranoid about the cord. I have weighed down the cord underneath so it can't be pulled - but keen to get a proper repair kit

noblegiraffe · 22/11/2013 07:48

You'd have thought they'd realise that people who buy their monitors are very concerned about their baby's safety and wouldn't be fobbed off with a 'don't worry'. Deaths caused by the very equipment bought to try to help keep your baby alive are just appalling.

2 baby deaths in the US, I wonder if there have been any in Europe.

silverten · 22/11/2013 07:56

Thanks Sizzles but DD is nearly four now and I'm done with the whole SIDS worry Smile. Would not recommend them to anyone- far too much hassle. I've bought a BT video monitor for no 2- cheaper and much less complicated to use, it's just plug and play.

As I remember when DH put the mat in the cot he used small zip ties to secure the cords- these are pretty cheap and easy to use- but it is poor that they are not particularly bothered about a demonstrable risk which has actually killed two American children already.

vtechjazz · 22/11/2013 08:05

My husband drilled a hole in our solid base cot and threaded the wire through that. Loose wire was then wound around legs of night stand so any exposed wire on floor was taught.

BoohPear · 22/11/2013 08:07

I have the ac401. Our cord is threaded through the base of the cot so im not immediatley worried but I have emailed Angelcare asking them to advise and send a kit out, will wait and see what they say.

CelticPromise · 22/11/2013 08:12

Oh dear. I love my Angelcare and have recommended it to loads of people Blush DS had breathing problems and the sensor pad made it easier to sleep at night! I kept the wire out of the way but I suppose I'm lucky he's never tried to get hold of it.

Wishfulmakeupping · 22/11/2013 08:45

We've always taped up the excess wires under the cot- does this sound safe enough am worried about whether to use the sensor pad tonight or remove it

SteamWisher · 22/11/2013 08:49

These monitors aren't proven to work anyway are they? Just an expensive and dangerous way to get extra peace of mind.

And I say this as someone who's baby used to stop breathing due to reflux - I remember poking him vigorously until he started again. Also had to call an ambulance once. Never used the monitors - he slept next to me instead and I woke every time.

It's common sense surely that anything which a baby could wrap round it's neck needs to be securely out of the way.

We used one of these alarms for both of our children. They are bloody brilliant bits of kit and they do work.

CelticPromise · 22/11/2013 09:59

They do work. Mine only ever went off when DS had a chest infection and his breathing went very shallow.

Cantsleep · 22/11/2013 10:43

Ds2 has one of these as he has had health issues since birth and I still use it now and he is 19 months.

Last week dh had to fix it as ds2 had woken up, grabbed the wires, pulled them and broken it which did make me worry as to what else he could have done. I'm torn though, if I don't se the sensor mat I will be a nervous wreck when he's asleep and if I do I will be worrying about strangulation.

Where can you get the rigid wire covers from in the uk ?

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 22/11/2013 10:50

Hmm, I have one of these and thought the cords looked dangerous as soon as we fitted it - we got round it by threading the cord around the leg of her cot so any cord she can reach is too tight to pull into the cot.

Seemed obvious to me, although I have to say, my dh didn't spot the issue until I pointed it out.
