AIBU to not be devastated that my DS has red hair

I have a beautiful, healthy 7 week old son who is smiley and basically gorgeous (biased of course).

But shock horror he has a mass of red hair!!

The response I am getting to this from some people is utterly ridiculous - 'oh don't worry it will change', 'oh I am sure it will go blonde', 'oh he is lovely regardless'. This is usually accompanied by slightly sympathetic head tilts.

WTAF - he has hair that might be red (or dare I say ginger) - he doesn't have a bloody life threatening illness or contagious disease. It's just hair!

Does anyone have any suggestions for suitably cutting responses to these comments. It maybe I have it wrong - maybe having red hair is far more terrible than I am realising.

Rant over.

I love red hair, wish I had it. My sister has the most beautiful auburn thick shiny hair silly cow keeps highlighting it

I will admit to having a quiet smile to myself though when an old friend had a beautiful child with the most striking, head on fire ginger hair going. He was the first person in the past to say snide things about ginger people but has stfu now Grin

motherinferior · 19/11/2013 10:45

What coppertop said.

I am quite miffed that my daughters haven't inherited my hair colour.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2013 10:50

I just don't get the fuss about ginger hair or why anyone would have such massively strong opinions on it.

But that goes for the 'pro' ginger haired as well as the 'anti' ginger haired people.

People who are 'devastated' that their child isn't ginger, or those who are 'gutted' and 'so upset' that their ginger child's hair went blonde/brown...are just as strange in my books Confused

It's just a hair colour and I wish people would stop insulting those who have it, and being so OTT when their kids don't.

wallaby73 · 19/11/2013 10:50

MY son has fabulous thick deep red hair, daughter a lovely honey "strawberry", thankfully I have had nothing but positive comments otherwise i would have ripped their heads from their shoulders with my bare hands (the offenders, not my kids, obviously....)

losersaywhat · 19/11/2013 10:51

I love ginger hair. My dh and eldest son are ginger and its lovely. Although when I was giving birth to my second dc and full of drugs I did announce that I wanted a girl with nice hair not mad ginger curls ( me and kids all have thick frizzy hair) . When I opened my eyes the student midwife had gorgeous bright ginger hair. She did see the funny side but I was so embarrassed. Blush I really have bo idea why I said or any of the other things I apparently said in labour.
I have told a few folk to feck off when they have commented on my sons hair but there's loads of ginger haired kids here.

Tailtwister · 19/11/2013 10:53

People can be such arses about red hair, I find it ridiculous.

YANBU. Red hair is gorgeous.

I'm afraid I would be very rude to people who made comments.

EldritchCleavage · 19/11/2013 10:59

I don't think you need to be polite in the face of that kind of shit, really. So say absolutely anything you like.

And people didn't used to be weird about red hair in this country (says my red-haired pensioner mother). It is a modern affectation and a bloody irritating one. I operate a zero tolerance policy on it.

Sorelip · 19/11/2013 11:00

How about giving the person in question a disgusted look and asking "what the fuck is wrong with you?", shaking your head and walking away. After all, what kind of person makes negative comments about a baby? An arsehole.

Why were you worried Suffolk?

Does it really matter what colour hair a baby is born with?

TessCackle · 19/11/2013 11:07

I love red hair!! Ginger is a race, tell them to stop being racist Grin

WhereIsMyHat · 19/11/2013 11:07

Oh I just love proper red hair, it's amazing. There's a teacher at my sons school that has the most beautiful red hair, pale skin and pink cheeks. It's so rare to see proper red natural hair.

I'd just reply something like 'oh, I really hope it stays red, much less boring than blonde or brown'

WhereIsMyHat · 19/11/2013 11:12

Worry, I think people are extreme on the pro side because it's the least common of all the hair colours and everyone loves a rarity.

EugenesAxe · 19/11/2013 11:12

Nutters. Red hair is great and I just don't GET why there is a 'ginger' bullying trend at all - babies or otherwise.

WorraLiberty · 19/11/2013 11:19

But not everyone does love a rarity or there wouldn't be so many 'anti ginger' people around WhereIs?

redexpat · 19/11/2013 11:20

Come to Denmark! They're so rare here it's considered an honour to have a redheaded baby.

motherinferior · 19/11/2013 11:23

I'm part Danish and red-haired Grin

Anniegetyourgun · 19/11/2013 11:24

I could always tell which was DS1 when I went to pick him up from football because his hair glowed like a beacon, especially (but not exclusively) when it was sunny. It's perhaps more auburn than ginger but still plenty to reflect them rays. He got a lot of admiring comments as a child. DGS (4 weeks) currently has the same but who knows what it will turn out like eventually.

DS4's hair is more sandy than red really, I call it Welsh gold, but he was still bullied horribly by gingerism at school. He is a decade younger so I wonder whether the whole anti-ginger thing is getting worse.

The middle two have dark brown hair, which is lovely too, of course, but not so easy to pick out in a crowd.

lemonmuffin · 19/11/2013 11:25

ignore them, they're nutters, red hair is beautiful

Millenniumbug1 · 19/11/2013 11:26

My eldest was born with bright red curls, still has red hair & is as gentle & placid as can be. Wonderful! You lucky Mum Evenflo Thanks

hiddenhome · 19/11/2013 11:39

I did put a complaint in to the midwife when I realised that newborn ds2 had red hair, but she wasn't really interested.

ballroomblitz · 19/11/2013 11:47

All my extended family have varying shades of red hair - from strawberry blond, to ginger to deep auburn. It's gorgeous. One of my family has bright ginger hair, works in fashion and is always getting compliments on the colour of her hair from the designers she interviews.

When I had both my dc the first thing both midwives commented on was 'at least they don't have ginger hair'. I was a bit Hmm at the statements considering both of them were redheads themselves.

DuckToWater · 19/11/2013 11:48

I married a ginge but got brown and blonde girls. I was hoping for ginger babies Grin. Red haired men are hot.

BatPenguin · 19/11/2013 11:50

Yanbu to be pissed off at people's stupid comments.

However, YABU to not provide a photo of the gorgeous little man for us to coo over Grin

Anniegetyourgun · 19/11/2013 11:50

I think, then, the theory must be that it's all right to have red hair as long as it isn't your natural colour. Make sense of that one if you can.

To be fair, if we were talking about a blue rinse or green/magenta streaks it would seem quite logical.
