To wonder if I'm allowed to shop in Waitrose?

One is opening nearby. I'm probably slightly lower middle class, I have ordered on-line from John Lewis, though, and I've never shopped in my pyjamas without a jumper and jeans on top.

Here is something I barely ever admit, on here or in RL, unless I am very sure of my audience.

Our housekeeper does our food shopping.

I am 71% posh. If I was independently wealthy all of our food would come from Selfridges, Harrods and Fortnum & Masons food halls. With top ups from M&S and, yes, Waitrose.

Bigwellylittlewelly · 18/11/2013 18:53

70% posh

Crumbs. I do like waitrose though and a bit partial to John Lewis.

PearlArgyle · 18/11/2013 18:56

I'm upper lower, or middle middle (not sure if the latter exists). I'm not a fan of Facebook generally, and haven't done quiz, so don't know my percentage.

I like Waitrose, though we only shop there occasionally in person as we prefer online deliveries. And then Ocado are more reliable (as regards substitutes) or Sainsbury's.

LadyLeah · 18/11/2013 18:59

thebody Totally agree, massive high five! I nearly cried when our local Netto became a Co-Op. Sad

thebody · 18/11/2013 19:05

LadyLeahthank god there's someone as commen as me in mumsnet!! finally!! Grin

Punkatheart · 18/11/2013 19:08

I am 77% posh but I have clearly fallen from grace because I use the 'bus.

helzapoppin2 · 18/11/2013 19:10

Of course you can. I say so!

helzapoppin2 · 18/11/2013 19:14

Just took the test- 45 % posh!

PatTheHammer · 18/11/2013 19:21

I shop in Aldi/Lidl but i am not a posh Aldi shopper, I go there out of necessity! I do however use the caff in Waitrose as it is proper nice and I have got one of those cards so I can get a free coffee.

Anyway, I popped into Waitrose in my lunchtime today to pick up 'birthday cake' for work ( that weird thing where you buy cakes for everyone else when it's your birthday). So I was expecting a quick in and out job as I only get 40minute lunch.

Oh my lord.........Waitrose tills are the SLOWEST in the world. Coupled with the large number of very slow old people shopping there, well I was lucky to get back to work on time.

So, you may be posh enough to shop there.......but are you slow enough?

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 18/11/2013 19:26

I think you could probably shop in whatever attire you liked in waitrose I do not think they would ever be so rude as to turn you away for what you wear.

I do not think its a posh shop either.

Its just a shop thats loved and taken care of because all the staff have an investment in it.

ElfontheShelfIsWATCHINGYOUTOO · 18/11/2013 19:27

never ever been subject to this, have always found managers shit hot at getting people on tills to sort queues out.

you must be at a really bad one or just un lucky, however if you complain about this you can be pretty sure they will sort it out.

PatTheHammer · 18/11/2013 19:32

Elf the girl on the till apologised. There were not that many tills open and they were making no effort to open new ones.the basket check out was rammed.

When it was finally my turn, The scanner was slow to react ( she said it was always like that) and the amount took ages to come through to the chip and pin machine.

Don't think I was unlucky, it looked pretty standard to me but ,then I am used to the speed of Lidl.

HerlockSholmes · 18/11/2013 19:33

26% posh. i have never been to waitrose but they did let me into sainsbury's last week. i bought wine and a hat-wearing smoothie. Grin

slalomsuki · 18/11/2013 19:50

Not posh at all and definitely not in a posh area (think coal mining and pound shops)but my local waitrose is great. Free coffee, free biscuit, free papers and prices the same as Tesco with great bargains in a Friday am just before their delivery.

Latest great addition is free wifi which along with the free parking makes me question why I should hack in to work, joining the great car park rush every morning. Waitrose seems so much more appealing than work.

hmc · 18/11/2013 19:55

I'm only 22% posh according to that facebook quiz (on account of not liking horses, never having attended a polo match, being state educated and enjoying football) - I am delighted and bemused in equal parts. Anyways, I mostly but not exclusively shop in Waitrose because some of their products are undeniably better (compare Waitrose picnic eggs with Tesco's - the former are tasty the latter are gritty) - so I am sure if that if Waitrose will admit a gnarly old chav like me then you will have no trouble at all.

I am actually thinking about defecting to Tesco though because when I have recently nipped in the staff on the tills and the other customers were all jolly friendly and we enjoyed a lovely bit of banter - whereas in Waitrose, whilst everyone is impeccably polite. it is all rather reserved and aloof

All the chavvy teens hang around outside our waitrose. Its in a housing association estate nothing posh about it so yes.

Eastwickwitch · 18/11/2013 20:16

Annie my chivvy teen works in Waitrose Blush

Eastwickwitch · 18/11/2013 20:16

err, chavvy.

DameDeepRedBetty · 18/11/2013 20:18

I'm 61% posh, however re question 27 'Do you know anyone called Rupert or Phillippa?' I know two Ruperts and three Phillippas, therefore should have got extra points and am clearly super super posh.

Caitlin17 · 18/11/2013 20:22

nancerama you are so spot on about the mincemeat pies tasting of loo cleaners.

But I'm a terrific snob. Waitrose all the way unless it's Marks & Sparks.

I do a lot of home baking and I was surprised that home baking basics are no cheaper in Sainsburys than Waitrose.

KittensoftPuppydog · 18/11/2013 20:38

So where do Marks and spencer fit?
I shop at aldi for the basics and then wait until m&s have a 'dine in for 2' then I go in and get 2 or 3 of them.
The key is to look nonchalent when the bill comes to exactly 30 quid and not get suckered into buying anything else.
I am not posh at all.

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 18/11/2013 21:26

I live less than 100 metres from a Waitrose, so it's the supermarket of choice simply because it's so near. We also use Sainsburys, Co-op and Budgens. They all have good points and bad points. The staff in Waitrose are polite and helpful, often noticeably more so than in other shops.

It's possible to go to Waitrose and not spend a fortune, simply by ignoring all the posher foods and buying the basics.

TeacupDrama · 18/11/2013 21:43

i'm 52% posh I do shop at waitrose for some things got raspberries for 99p today

the free tea/coffee everyday is real no need to spend a penny get a mywaitrose card turn up get regular tea/ coffee/cappuccino/latte/mocha sit in cafe with free papers and leave one drink per card per day
babychinos are just 50p much cheaper than juice/smoothies for kids

if you spend £5 you can get free guardian/telegraph or daily mail in a whisper observer on sundays

but I get asda online for washing powder crisps bulk buys once a fortnight
aldi for some stuff and farmfoods for my DH's VIMTO addiction

have to agree that their staff are friendly and helpful; last year apparently everyone got a bonus the equivalent of either 9 or 11 weeks wages (can't remember which)

justmyview · 18/11/2013 21:51

Remember to go shopping with a man in rhubarb cords & you'll be fine
