... Less and less people are prepared to do it?

I have noticed no difference, especially on my way to work. Gits are still right up close

Justforlaughs · 16/11/2013 18:46

I didn't know that fines HAD been introduced for tailgating and certainly would never have guessed!

LetZygonsbeZygons · 16/11/2013 19:07

how are they caught though?

and where I live its worse than ever btw.

cant exactly take car number down when you read it backwards through rear view mirror!

GobbolinoCat · 16/11/2013 19:08

Have they?

It seems to me now its darker and driving conditions are getting more dangerous, and all the cyclists come out to play with those horrid flashy lights drivers are getting even closer. Confused

Today I had to let someone past and the other day someone was so close to me I was only able to go at half speed limit and she was flashing me and waving me with her hands. I saw a police car, drove past and stopped and he was not in the slighest bit interested.

Squidwardtenticles · 16/11/2013 19:15

I am having driving lessons and i have been tail gated numerous times. Especially by white van men.
It's really scary and putting me off Sad

Geckos48 · 16/11/2013 19:28

Oh, maybe it's just helped me then!

southeastastra · 16/11/2013 19:29

they do it less on my journey to work on the A1

eurochick · 16/11/2013 19:34

I've noticed no difference at all.

dexter73 · 16/11/2013 19:38

I haven't noticed any difference either Angry

CrispyFB · 16/11/2013 19:47

It seems slightly better, but arseholes will be arseholes whether there is a fine or not. The thought of consequences does not occur to their tiny enraged brains. So the really bad ones still do it, but I've noticed a little bit of a decrease in ones that are only a bit aggressive.

There was a nobhead today in front of me driving inches from the car in front, and having his right indicator on deliberately (he switched it on after a minute or so) in the outside lane of the M3. It was busy, and the outside lane was doing 80-85mph fairly consistently and going faster than the other lanes. There was also a constant queue of cars in front of the car he was tailgating, and in all the other lanes too, so there was absolutely nowhere for him or indeed the car he was tailgating to go. That kind of insanity is never going to respond to fines.

Is the car behind you tailgating when they are so close you can't even see their headlights? I get this all the time :(

dexter73 · 16/11/2013 19:53

Yes tickingboxes, I have had this. Just makes me slow down though!

tickingboxes · 16/11/2013 19:55

Yes, I wave my hands at them in the rearview mirror, which has a 50% success rate of getting them to slow down!

If they ignore me I slow down.

TempusFuckit · 16/11/2013 20:33

I'm a bit confused as to how cyclist's choice of lights makes arseholes more likely to tailgate Confused

gordyslovesheep · 16/11/2013 20:47

nope - was almost hit by an artic on the M42 on Tuesday - in heavy traffic - driving right up my arse Angry

specialsubject · 16/11/2013 20:55

I wish. Too many fuckwits still on my tail, because they don't like me going at about 2mph below the speed limit on a road that has a lot of blackspots.

may they all drive into trees.

grumpyoldbat · 16/11/2013 21:31

I've not noticed any difference. Just as many idiots as there always has been.

GobbolinoCat · 16/11/2013 21:37

How many accident would be avoided if people simply left a big gap in front?

Can I put a handwritten sign in the back of my car telling people to back off? Is it legal?

LetZygonsbeZygons · 16/11/2013 21:39

Gobbo that's what I was wondering too, a sign like 'if you can read this you're too damn close!!!' or words to that effect!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/11/2013 21:46

I want one of those little message signs in the back

Thank You

Back Off

Etc.

I've had tailgaiters up my backside in the left lane on the M25. Can't even see their number plate they are so close.

I either pop the hazard lights on for a couple of flashes or ignore them. Concentrate on what's in front

decaffwithcream · 16/11/2013 21:56

The car which had been driving behind me safely and sensibly for 10 minutes got tailgated horribly close, by a HGV when we went into a ftunnel today. We were all already going at the speed limit.

(I nipped into the overtaking lane as the car behind was getting forced ever closer to me and he sped up and undertook me. As did the lorry)

HGVs are not meant to use the overtaking lane in that tunnel I think.

Though why the HGV driver would observe that rule and think it was any less dangerous to tailgate and undertake is anyone's guess.

Police permanently stationed at one end of the tunnel, never at the other.

NoComet · 16/11/2013 22:05

Ah, the M3, DH's least favourite road.

Renowned for being full of arse holes.

I didn't know tail gating was on the polices fine list, either.
