To wonder why so many people are so inexplicably stupid?

I saw a comment by someone in another thread that said ''People don't think that a bank cashier is a banker, do they?'' and it has set me off on a Major League Rant (not aimed at the person who wrote that, but at people who DO think exactly that.)

My fella used to be a cashier at a bank for years before he got promoted. EVERY SINGLE DAY, without fail, he'd get moronic customers moaning at him for being a ''banker on a massive bonus''. He was a cashier on minimum wage, and even the bank managers didn't get the ridiculous sort of bonuses these imbeciles were on about.

I asked around and it seems that cashiers at various banks get this crap all the time.

What sort of moron really believes that a bank cashier is a millionaire banker? Why are so many people so dim?

...AND BREATHE!

Why do people watch x factor?

YANBU!

MrsRajeshKoothrappali · 16/11/2013 15:09

Perhaps he could staple his payslip to his tie?

Wink
Floralnomad · 16/11/2013 15:11

It's only like the idiot people who think that workers in the public services don't pay tax ,NI or make pension contributions .

fanjofarrow · 16/11/2013 15:12

MrsRajesh I'm not sure that half of these fools are literate or numerate enough to be able to read his payslip even if he did! Grin

Agree, dh works in a HO of a bank and he hasn't seen any of these legendary bonuses either - I wish ! They do exist , even now, but for a minority but most work hard not knowing if they will face redundancy, restructure (again) or simply uncertainty.

RandallFloyd · 16/11/2013 15:15

In my last job I was regularly told that the economy collapsed because of people like me.

I earned 18k a year.

thebody · 16/11/2013 15:16

when I was a nurse I used to get, ' I pay your wages' mmm yes I pay taxes too!!

idiots.

YouTheCat · 16/11/2013 15:16

I heard some twat proclaiming that the banking crisis was all the fault of those bank workers on minimum wage. Their logic being that they had sold people PPI. They wouldn't accept that these people had to sell it, they were told to sell it.

That was some supposedly high up type on radio 2.

StealthPolarBear · 16/11/2013 15:17

that's hilarious, although I suppose I do see the logic that banker = person who works in a bank :o

ilovesooty · 16/11/2013 15:17

Some people are just irredeemably stupid: like the ones who say teachers should have their training days in the holidays and stop causing childcare problems. Hmm

StealthPolarBear · 16/11/2013 15:19

"thebody Sat 16-Nov-13 15:16:14

You weren't bank staff were you? Cos that's twice as bad :o

Justforlaughs · 16/11/2013 15:19

Quite simply, I blame "health and safety" laws! It used to be called Natural Selection Grin

My DH is in the same boat OP, and has just lost his job into the bargain - but of course it's all HIS fault! Sad

fanjofarrow · 16/11/2013 15:22

Polar I used to laugh at it too; the fact that anyone was dopey enough to believe such nonsense tickled me. DP and his colleagues generally laugh it off because they're used to it. After years of being exposed to this stupidity on a daily basis though, it starts to grate.

"EVERY SINGLE DAY, without fail, he'd get moronic customers moaning at him for being a ''banker on a massive bonus''.

They didn't believe he was on a massive bonus, they were just having a moan about banks and bankers, not staff like him, and since they never meet the bigwig bankers, they moan to staff at the tills.

Also it is a bit of humour, where they pretend it is the staff at the till who get the bonuses, but they know that they don't really.

YouTheCat · 16/11/2013 15:26

It's not, Claig. People really are that stupid.

ouryve · 16/11/2013 15:27

Really, Claig? You seem to be writing with such authority that one can assume you have first hand knowledge and experience. Do you have a go at cashiers in banks, then? Hmm

hellokittymania · 16/11/2013 15:27

Why do people assume accountants/managers/full time workers at charities don't get paid?

It drives me mad!

InkleWinkle · 16/11/2013 15:29

It's not humour, some of them really think the staff they see are the ones earning the mega bucks.
Genuinely.

fanjofarrow · 16/11/2013 15:29

No claig, it wasn't, and in most cases it wasn't humour either - it was nasty, very personal accusations aimed at him and his fellow minimum wage earning colleagues, by people who believed that they were on massive bonuses.

There were of course some people who would make a joke about it, which was obviously a joke, and would be taken in good humour. The majority of people who started this rubbish with the cashiers genuinely seemed to believe it. They would get very aggressive.

OP posts:
claig · 16/11/2013 15:29

'Why do people assume accountants/managers/full time workers at charities don't get paid? '

Because people want to believe that charity is done voluntarily for no personal benefit.

However, the reality is that many people believe that charity bosses are raking it in and that is why they no longer donate because they think the money doesn't go to the good causes but ends up elsewhere.

LCHammer · 16/11/2013 15:29

Claim - was it you? You seem to know it was a bit of humour.

The same people who think teachers work 9-3, GPs get paid £250k a year, and all sorts of divisive nonsense? You know who I blame.

LCHammer · 16/11/2013 15:30

That should have had :) at the end.

claig · 16/11/2013 15:31

YouCat, Inkle and fanjo, maybe you are right. But are there really a lot of people like that?

ilovesooty · 16/11/2013 15:32

You just know you're going to be dealing with the stupid when you get "I don't follow the news or anything like that..."

It's not so much lack of intellect but a mind often dulled by celebrity dross, incapable of enquiry and generally reliant on prejudice and lazy opinions gleaned from others with similarly narrow minds.

fanjofarrow · 16/11/2013 15:35

claig Is it that you want to believe human nature is better than it actually is, and that because you're clearly not that dim, loads of people couldn't possibly be that dim either? Smile

I'm afraid plenty are!

My DP and his colleagues have had this on a daily basis for years now. Most of the people who do it aren't joking about, they become aggressive and obnoxious about it.
