To go to a fancy dress party, not in fancy dress?!

It's tonight! The theme is 'movie stars'. It's my cousin's 40th.

We were invited several weeks ago, but due to child care issues we thought we wouldn't be able to make it. Last night, MIL called to say her plans had changed and she'd be happy to have the DCs for the night.

We literally have no spare time today to sort costumes! We're not the biggest fans of dressing up anyway (har har) so we don't exactly have costumes lying around.

DH thinks we'll be ok going 'as ourselves' but I'm worried we'll be the only ones not dressed up, and will consequently stand out.

Anyone got any bright ideas for me?!Smile

I will stop now Blush

OldRoan · 16/11/2013 12:59

Put on some big sunglasses and go as movie stars off set. Sorted.

Does DH have jeans and a white t shirt? James Dean. You could also be James Dean, come to that.

bigTillyMint · 16/11/2013 13:01

Some great ideas above - go on, give it a goSmile

phantomhairpuller · 16/11/2013 13:02

Brill ideas, thank you! Though I'm not sure anyone would want to see DH with his shirt undone Wink

Dress in all white and go as one of the extras in Gandhi Grin

hanette · 16/11/2013 14:18

Do you have a daughter? Borrow her tiara and wand and you're a fairy!

Do you have a son? Borrow his gun and your DH is 007!

RaspberryRuffle · 16/11/2013 15:16

YwouldBU not to wear fancy dress after MNers have given you these ideas.
You'll hve better fun anyway, it's a bit of an ice breaker isn't it, guessing who people are supposed to be.
Have you or DH got curly red hair? If so stick on a red dress and be Annie.
Is he a geeky type who could be Clark Kent?

thebody · 16/11/2013 15:18

yes you need to dress up really or it looks like you haven't bothered to make an effort. could look a bit rude/superior although if course you don't mean to be. iuswim.

choccyp1g · 16/11/2013 15:23

I wouldn't dare go to a fancy dress party in my ordinary best clothes, in case someone thought I had come as a granny, or a bag-lady, or Princess Anne (I do bear a faint resemblence), or Mrs.Doubtfire, Nany McPhee etc.

Of course depending on your glamourousness, OP, people might think you have come as Brangelina, or Mr. and Mrs Beckham.

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 16/11/2013 15:37

Yes you should be able to cobble something together.

Black dress and tiara - breakfast a Tiffany's.

Black skinny jeans, leather jacket etc - Sandra Dee in the last scene in Grease. Danny's costume again easy of you have a leather jacket, plus mascara sideburns.

Or some kind of Bond girl, any party dress/glam plus you gun. If DH has a wetsuit he could be Bond in the wetsuit. Etc.

Or Tom Cruise and Kelly MCwhatever girl next door in Top Gun also easy to do. (Or the similar characters in Cocktail, just bring a shaker).

For your DH lots of characters wear some kind of suit and you can play with the hair to get it right eg Wall Street Charlie Sheen hair slicked back and yuppy suit stripe shirt. One of the Many lawyer characters in the Firm. Brideshead Revisited. Kiera Knightly and James McAvoy in Atonement.

Enjoy the party!

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 16/11/2013 15:38

Sorry for the many typos, damn autocorrect/phone, must remember to preview before I post!

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 16/11/2013 15:41

Also for DH one of the Reservoir Dogs hitmen easy to do.

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 16/11/2013 16:29

do let us know what you go as,

sausageandorangepickle · 16/11/2013 17:21

If DH has a DJ and you have a sparkly dress you could be Bond and a Bon d girl, or if you are more 'relaxed' dressers (like us!) go as Bill and Ted, or Wayne & Garth (or he could be casual as Wayne and you could be dressy as Cassandra(??)

hanette · 16/11/2013 17:49

great ideas. I think both going as James Dean in white t shirts and jeans gets my vote!

OP what did you decide?

Panzee · 16/11/2013 17:52

Headscarf and sunglasses - generic female movie star.

phantomhairpuller · 16/11/2013 18:54

Well, we went with the easiest option! DH in suit as James Bond type character. I'm in black skinny jeans, black vest top and leather jacket with BIG hair! Am hoping I resemble sandy in last grease scene!

Thanks all Smile
