If u live in a good home, have plenty to eat and can read, you are a member of a very select group.

If you have a good house, food, can read and have a computer you are among the very elite.

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness . .you are more fortunate than the million people who will not survive this week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation . . .you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture or death . . .you are fortunate, more than three billion people in the world can't.

If you have food in the fridge, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep. . .you are richer than 75% of this world. If you have money in the bank, in your wallet and spare change in a dish . . .you are among the top 8% of the worlds wealthy.

Perspective anyone??

I do think it's strange that people discuss money so freely. I have always found that a bit weird about mumsnet.

I find the stealth boasting a bit weird too.

ChasedByBees · 16/11/2013 15:30

I am below average height and above average weight.

thebody · 16/11/2013 15:32

Catinthebed,, excellent post.

relative poverty and all that.

Crowler · 16/11/2013 15:32

Quite right catinthebed. thanks for posting

DidoTheDodo · 16/11/2013 15:34

I am in the top 1% in my house. That's me and the cat. Actually, I might not be...

musicposy · 16/11/2013 15:42

I'm pretty average. I'm married to an average bloke with average IQ who earns 20k a year and he probably isn't going to ever achieve much more than that, in all honesty.

I'm bright - was one of the highest flyers at school and uni but was lazy and liked boys more than academia so am a real underachiever according to my potential.

We live in an average house on a housing estate. We can't afford expensive things or fancy holidays and private school for even one of our two children would take up pretty much our whole income.

I'm about average height and pretty average looking.

There are plenty of people on here with lifestyles I can only dream of but it bothers me only in very small moments. I love my DH who I've been with for over 20 years and adore my two girls. I wouldn't swap that for being less average in any area. :)

IAlwaysThought · 16/11/2013 15:52

Lol, I didn't need a calculater to work out that 25% of 5 million is still an awful lot.

MN is an anonymous forum, people come on here to discuss things they could never discuss in real life. Just look at some of the wierdo sex threads Hmm I don't think the public school type threads are necessarily representative of the 'top 1 %'

OP, I guess I don't really understand what this thread is about. I don't understand your point.

ParsingFancy · 16/11/2013 15:58

But... OP, how can you personally have worked very hard and have no CV?

Or by "we worked hard" do you mean "they worked hard, and I lived off them"?

I'm just trying to tease this out, because I've noticed similar elsewhere (often, ironically, from people slagging off low earners), where a SAHP or inheritor, living off another person's work, somehow identifies themselves with the person doing the work.

Typical eg: "We deserve our income because DH works really hard." Erm, well DH deserves the income maybe, but you're a SAHP on a large family income. It's not exactly harder work than being a SAHP on a very small family income, is it? Indeed some might think the opposite...

ParsingFancy · 16/11/2013 16:01

BTW, I'm not into judging people's moral worth by the number of hours' paid work they do, or their hourly rate. So it really doesn't matter to me.

But a lot of people do seem rather judgy like that. And a surprising number seem to fall at their own bar.

Grennie · 16/11/2013 16:02

Being rich or wealthy does not mean that you automatically work harder than poorer people. I know quite a few people doing full time jobs and then part time jobs on top to make ends meet. They work very long hours and very hard.

Or my friend who runs her own business. She is not poor, she earns about 50k salary for herself. She works very long hours and rarely takes holidays.

The idea that hard work is rewarded, is a naive belief.

Grennie · 16/11/2013 16:04

And I personally worked much harder when I was in low paid jobs, than I do now.

thebody · 16/11/2013 16:06

very true Grennie, if you want to look at lazy arse free loaders please meet many members of our 'royal family'.

Philoslothy · 16/11/2013 16:07

I am average and probably a bit dull. I suspect my children take after me.

soul2000 · 16/11/2013 16:09

The thread was because i got very angry about the the statements of "HOW HARD IT IS TO LIVE ON HIGH SALARIES" I had to mention that my family used to be Wealthy, because i had to put an end to the statements that i was Jealous or a "COMMUNIST" to make my point stand up.

(IF I HAD NOT HAD A DRINK , I WOULD NOT HAVE POSTED THIS THREAD)".

OP posts:
Philoslothy · 16/11/2013 16:12

I am also a bit of a lazy arse, if I could be a free loader and live how I wanted to I probably would.

Sadly I have to work moderately hard.

Crowler · 16/11/2013 16:16

IF I HAD NOT HAD A DRINK , I WOULD NOT HAVE POSTED THIS THREAD

LOL

Laquitar · 16/11/2013 16:26

How did you lose 3.7 millions?

WorraLiberty · 16/11/2013 16:32

Fair enough OP

It takes a big person to come back and admit to having started a thread, after having a few to drink. Some would just bugger off and name change.

Especially when you said upthread 'I don't drink' Grin

But honestly, don't let other people's income or any part of their life get you down. It's just not worth the angst.

soul2000 · 16/11/2013 16:33

Cvs from Family Businesses are Worthless. 25 years working in the business
and my offshoot, when it goes wrong in reality you become a 42 year old school leaver with no qualifications or any relevant experience.

OP posts:
hmc · 16/11/2013 16:40

Where on the thread that you deride were the statements bemoaning how hard it is to live on six figure salaries? - please cite a direct quote from that thread where someone is hand wringing about it all....since I may have missed it? As far I could see if was a straight forward question from the OP about whether it was feasible / sensible to attempt to fund four children's private education from a certain salary or whether that would be imprudent in her circumstances. She was asking others about their direct experiences. I am sure that the vast majority of high earners recognise how very fortunate they are....

The supposed 'auction' and outdoing / grandstanding that you refer to appears to be a figment of your own fevered imagination

hmc · 16/11/2013 16:42

I do agree with Worra - why let other people's good fortune get you down? It only hurts you in the end. There's plenty of things I could be eaten up with jealously about but I try not to let it consume me

IAlwaysThought · 16/11/2013 16:43

IF I HAD NOT HAD A DRINK , I WOULD NOT HAVE POSTED THIS THREAD

Fair enough OP. Smile

SPsDoesntLikeChaffingFishnets · 16/11/2013 16:45

I cant afford private school fees either
