soul2000 · 15/11/2013 23:56

Is this site just for the top 1% of the world..........

Is there anybody who is just normal.........

OP posts:
soul2000 · 16/11/2013 01:15

I Dont Drink.. The total lack of awareness about the rest of the world outside their bubble.

If i get angry reading it, a relatively privileged politically Right of Centre person, think what most normal badly paid people think.

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 16/11/2013 01:20

Isn't it a good opportunity for you to learn something about people outside your own bubble soul?

GoshAnneGorilla · 16/11/2013 01:26

Tbh, I felt like this on a recent thread about sexual harassment of teenage girls.

Apparently all of Mumsnet have breathtakingly beautiful daughters, who could be models.

What other threads brings out the stealth and not so stealth boasting?

ThornSayre · 16/11/2013 01:30

GoshAnneGorilla that is interesting.

soul2000 · 16/11/2013 01:30

AgentZigzag. I am certainly not a "Communist" I know many Very wealthy people, all of them very coy and quiet. If i was a poor person from a deprived town or region with no "Chance" in life i would want to "RIOT" ,GOD i am turning into OWEN JONES.......

John Major has realised it, "Things have gone to far now" John Major at least had the courage to come out and say what many of my fellow Conservative
Party Members think ( THE ONES THAT DID NOT GO TO ETON OR OTHER PLACES OF THEIR ILK) I am 42 , i have been a Tory Party Member since i was 18. Actually many of them are frightened there is going to be very serious disorder if there are no signs that any progress is being made in
redressing the balance.

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 16/11/2013 01:36

Just saying something about yourself isn't necessarily stealth boasting Gosh.

I've been reading the random acts of kindness thread, and posters saying about the things they've done for other people just doesn't seem to sit right, but there's no other way of discussing the situations they've come across without saying it.

And I don't want to stealth boast myself, but my daughters are beautiful enough to be models Wink

It's not the only reason I love them though Grin

Grennie · 16/11/2013 01:45

I don't care if people want to talk about not being able to afford school fees when they are very well off.

All that annoys me on here are the people saying they are not well off, when statistically, that simply is not true.

p.s. I have spent my evening doing work to fundraise for some feminist projects. If there is anyone out there with lots of spare cash to donate, pm me :)

KenAdams · 16/11/2013 01:52

What's an acceptable level of income to you then Soul? Just so people know so they can turn down any promotions etc that take them over the threshold?

We don't earn anywhere close to what people on the other thread do, but I'm not going to ridicule them for doing so. They worked hard to get to that level, good for them. The lifestyle that comes with that is their own business.

And yes, £200k sounds like a crazy amount, but the OP is asking if she can afford £100k out of that for school fees and she can't. I don't see why you need to start a thread judging her for that.

What makes you think they all live in a bubble anyway? Because they don't donate everything they have to charity? I take it you only have the bare essentials? No clothes you like, no meals out, no holidays, not even newspaper.

People have different lives to one other, shock horror.

GoshAnneGorilla · 16/11/2013 01:53

Agent - It was everyone's daughter on the entire thread though! it was bizarre. I can remember being an extremely average looking teen in a school filled with extremely average looking teens, so I don't know where all these leggy potential models come from. Smile

Grennie · 16/11/2013 01:59

KenAdams - I don't believe in ridiculing them either. But there are plenty of poor people who work extremely hard and very long hours, just to get by.You don't get paid according to how hard you work.

AgentZigzag · 16/11/2013 02:06

But didn't two thirds of Major's cabinet go to public school??

Does your footballers example suggest it's the nouveau riche who don't know talking about money is vulgar that piss you off the most? Grin

But it's an anonymous forum, they probably don't talk about it in RL, and I'm sure they don't rub less affluent people's noses in it, (apart from the outward signs of their wealth).

But...but...you're a Tory!

CoolStoryBro · 16/11/2013 05:49

Isn't it Children In Need night in the UK?! Which would make it a particularly odd night to go with the Poor, Rich Me threads

littlewhitebag · 16/11/2013 07:15

My DH is a high earner. My children attend/ed private school. However to suggest I live in a bubble and lack awareness about the rest of the world is despicable.

I work as a social worker and am very much aware of what goes on in the world. I am very grateful for what I have as DH and I have been through tough times financially and emotionally over the years. I have never been of the opinion I am above average just very very fortunate.

People on here really need to start engaging their brains before letting rip.

LouiseAderyn · 16/11/2013 07:31

Not read the other thread but I can see why someone on 200k would struggle to pay 100k on school fees. They are not actually bringing home 200k - once taxed they will be losing a massive chunk of money. If you factor in housing/transport/bills then they wouldn't really have a lot of money if they were spending 4 lots of school fees.

The real question should be 'why aren't we improving the state schools so that people dont want to go private?'

This is the government's fault for constantly fucking about with the system and failing to put enough money into it.

To answer the OPs question, I am average. My problem in life has been the assumption by parents and teachers that I am brighter and more capable than I actually am!

AuntieStella · 16/11/2013 07:32

Their "bubble" is their real life.

No one life is more valuable than others, whether rich, poor or just average.

No need to set up divisions between MNetters, or catcall those in different circumstances.

I am well below average in terms of income. DH above. Does that balance out our household to average, or set up a chasm between us?

mewmeow · 16/11/2013 07:44

I think we are on the bottom-ish end of income, one unemployed, one a student we live of grants, loans and benefits. But feel very lucky to have the oppurtunity for going to uni. we always have enough to eat, have a tv (and netflix). I think we're average? No savings though and living in overdraft, but that is normal round here.

soul2000 · 16/11/2013 10:22

Louise. I know there are probably bringing home half the amount they earn
.
I know what the cost of living is in a major city.

I know how much money my mum and dad are spending to have a life that is a third of what they used to have.

Because, as people say this is anonymous site people perhaps open up and say things that are best kept private.

The people earning these amounts are probably financial advisors/ Lawyers/ Bankers, the very people who have "Fucked Up" my family and myself, taking their advice on £250- 500 Per hour then watch the money your family has grafted for 30 -40 years to disappear ,in lied about schemes by these professionals .

The thread was not about that though, it was about people complaining how expensive life is. People in the top 1% of earners in the uk need to realise how lucky they are.

OP posts:
LouiseAderyn · 16/11/2013 10:34

soul I do agree that they are lucky and also that they are making a choice to be financially stretched whereas most of us are financially stretched with no choice at all. Yes, they should remember that their decision to choose private education will give their dc real advantages over the kids being educated in state schools. I was just saying that I can see that while they are paying out for this they probably don't have much money left to actually live on. In some areas of the country I think that if you want a decent education then private is the only option and people might not be able to move because of work.

I am not drowning in sympathy though, because they are soi much better off than everyone else.

I woul

LouiseAderyn · 16/11/2013 10:35

pressed post too soon

I would like to see state education raised so there is no advantage to private school.

aquashiv · 16/11/2013 10:38

Whats normal?

SourSweets · 16/11/2013 10:42

I am distinctly, proudly average. I have debts, I live in a rented flat with no garden, I do not decant beer into a glass, my children were/will be born in NHS hospitals, and will be going to state schools. I have no qualms with this.

although I'm looking forward to the debt being gone

mrsjay · 16/11/2013 10:44

dunno about all you but i am freaking awesome Grin i am not i am just normal and an average like most on here

killpeppa · 16/11/2013 10:46

I'm i but below...
my dad calls me 'Tim Tim nice but dim'
I am all women, my name is definitely not Tim...

the dim thing might be trueSad

IAlwaysThought · 16/11/2013 10:46

Soul

You seem to be making massive assumptions about a huge group of people. The top 1% of earners represents 60,000 people in the Uk. I am sure some are ungrateful twits but for you to be so critical of all of them is insulting.
Our family income is very high, perhaps you don't realise how hard some people have worked for their money. Yes we have been lucky in some respects, we are healthy and reasonably intelligent but we worked bloody hard and we really respect the value of money.

I don't judge people that earn less than us, I know lots of people work extremely hard but I don't think they should judge us either.

FWIW - no private schools anywhere in our family - comps for us and the kids

killpeppa · 16/11/2013 10:46

a bit*

thats the dimness
