I feel so shit right now.

Looking after my 5 year old niece today and was standing at the back door. From where my back door is you can see into neighbours garden. She was in the garden and I was talking to her. Niece was in living room watching cartoons with ds. Or so I thought.

After talking to neighbour I stepped back in the house and closed the door to hear a piercing cry. Niece had her fingers wedged into the gap at the other end if the door. The part where the gap appears when the door opens and disappears when it closes.

She can move her fingers but there is a small bruise along her middle finger :( I rang dsis right after and she said not to worry these things happen. But I still feel really guilty.

I feel so awful :( idiot or what?

My friend trapped my sons fingers in between the seats in the car as she put the one next to him down. He milked it and got a Mcds out of her Grin

Dont beat yourself up. I have done stuff to my own child.

YesWeWork · 13/11/2013 18:06

Like your sister said, these things happen and are sooooooo easily done.
Every person who has ever looked after a child at some point will have a story of the accidental harm they did to that child.
You're certainly not an idiot. Thanks

SheRaHasTheAnswer · 13/11/2013 18:07

We've all done stuff like that! I am sure your sis understands and is just grateful she didn't do it! She won't be blaming you and your niece probably will have moved on already. The great thing about kids is that they rarely hold grudges!

Please don't be hard on yourself!

catsmother · 13/11/2013 18:09

If it makes you feel better I did this to my daughter when she was about 5 - I shut her fingers in the boot of my car and felt awful - obviously. I burst into tears as much as she did ..... nice Tesco lady (it was in their car park) took us back in the store and wrapped her hand in a bag of frozen peas while I blubbed. She was bruised too but thankfully nothing broken - and cheered up a bit after getting a comic and sweets from her guilty ridden mum.

Oh I did the same to dd1, the noise she made! Sad

I took her to minor injuries the next day as it was still swollen. They classed it as a trapping injury, I got the impression they saw it quite a lot. It's horrible though.

Sounds like your dsis is being sensible about it, don't fret too much.

thebody · 13/11/2013 18:10

ohhhh poor you and poor niece.

it's always the crack in the door that needs watching as kids will put their fingers there not realising it closes as the door does.

we have all done it.

hugs to you both and it happens.

MoveYourArmsLikeHenry · 13/11/2013 18:11

If it makes you feel any better, my godson fell down the stairs the first time I looked after him! Turned my back for 5 seconds and he was gone.

He was fine. It happens to the best of us Smile

My brother slammed his boot shut on my DDs fingers. He felt awful. Luckily she was not badly hurt, but it took him longer to get over it than my DD.

mrspremise · 13/11/2013 18:28

My Dad shut my hand in the car door when I was about 3. I can still hold a glass of wine Grin

JackShit · 13/11/2013 18:32

I shut my then 18 month old DD's finger in the inner crack of a door and chopped 1/3 of it off. She had to have it sewn back on under general Sad

Offler · 13/11/2013 18:45

I squashed my little cousins fingers in a play doh extruder Blush

Oh the screams...

He was fine Grin

thebody · 13/11/2013 18:55

oh Jack!! that must have been awful for you both!!

this thread making me shudder!!

Tailtwister · 13/11/2013 19:02

You poor thing, it's awful when something like that happens.

I shut our front door on my son's fingers (twice). I pulled it shut (behind me), it didn't close so I slammed it again. I turned around and he was doing that awful silent scream thing. We went straight to the local children's hospital and I was almost in tears having to admit he had been injured by me. He was x-rayed and no breaks thank goodness. One of his nails did go black and fall off though.

ShakeRattleNRoll · 13/11/2013 19:30
