It isn't even about educating children in gender equality though. It is about being smart enough not to build obvious stereotypes and inequality into the show. I would hope for a start that there aren't many families where a brother who wants to join in with cake decoration isn't told it is only for his sister. Sad

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister · 23/11/2013 17:13

What Penguins said!

more eloquently than I was going to

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 23/11/2013 17:21

Thanks HarrietSmile Except for my is/isn't typoBlush

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister · 23/11/2013 17:36

:) still more eloquent been on the mulled wine all day

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 23/11/2013 17:51

Envy Very envious. No mulled wine for me this year Don't think it will appeal as much in May when I've had the baby and can drink again...

Offred · 23/11/2013 18:55

Exactly, nothing to do with educating children about gender equality. A lot to do with not promoting gender inequality to vulnerable preschoolers. Why have they taken out the racism but not the sexism?

Offred · 23/11/2013 18:59

Those saying it is sweet, sweet in what way exactly? I don't think 'sweet' is about forcing children into proscribed gender roles from preschool age. Yes a lot of the sexism shown in the school (and abnormally twee family relationships to a lesser extent) are normal/desirable in a lot of families, however that doesn't mean the show is not promoting toxic stereotypes/values to children.

Offred · 23/11/2013 19:01

*Show

eggsforbreakfast · 23/11/2013 20:13

What bothers me is the fact they have carpet in their kitchen

Curbyourlassitude · 23/11/2013 20:33

Yes lets have a healthy dose of reality. Siblings screaming and fighting, exhausted parents, extended breastfeeding, parents sleeping in separate rooms

At least the house is messy and cramped. I hate these show homes everyone seems to live in

YesAnastasia · 23/11/2013 21:07

Well it makes me cry - in a 'it's lovely' way. I always cry at happy families.

And I fancy the Dad.

DancingLady · 23/11/2013 21:40

eggs yes I can't get past that! Carpet in the kitchen FFS!

I haven't noticed any sexism yet but maybe I'm not looking hard enough... Or I haven't seen enough episodes.

HarrietJonesPrimeMinister · 24/11/2013 07:17

I'm waiting for the 'and that's when mum said she'd have to go to work to pay for the new mortgage' or 'and that's when Mum said we were moving to a new house because it had been repossessed '

bushmills · 24/11/2013 08:48

My DD who is 3.5 loves it. Fills a gap between dinner and bath time. Gigglebiz at 5.15pm followed by Topsy and Tim = calm relaxed household.

It was never going to replace the books, nor do I think it was its intention, but it's something new which is a good thing. Was getting tired of Grandpa in my Pocket.

GoofyIsACow · 24/11/2013 10:26

Now Katie Morag... We LOVE that here!

Every time KM signals her Granny Island with her torch before she goes to bed, i get rather teary. I'd LOVE to live on Struay (even though it doesn't really exist)

HappyHippyChick · 24/11/2013 21:57

OMG Katie Morag today where they were looking for Izzy and it was the mum made me bawl! Disclaimer - pregnancy hormones at work!

bushmills · 25/11/2013 13:01

Thumbs up for KM from us too! Pity it's only on Sundays. What about Swashbuckle!!!!!! Love it

bloosn · 25/11/2013 18:58

Hmmm... my 2 1/2 year old daughter loves it, she even has her favourite episodes...
Not sure why everything must be "real"..has anyone seen Peppa Pig..?
Well done the Beeb!

YesAnastasia · 25/11/2013 23:25

No HappyHippy looking for Izzy made me cry too. Only I thought she was going to be that granny's dead child. I said to DH 'this is bit dark for cbeebies'

BeyondTheLimitsOfAcceptability · 26/11/2013 06:08

Topsy's friends name is Vinda, not Linda! Grin

LauraChant · 26/11/2013 11:32

Oh OK, I thought I might have misheard! Grin

SarfEasticated · 26/11/2013 18:02

T&T's mum has tool box shocker - she capably removed that door handle and saved the day. Can we forgive her now?

As for Katie Morag and looking for Izzy, I too thought that Izzy was a dead child - thank god it wasn't - too traumatic. Still made me cry at the end.

Wish they would come up with a replacement for ITNG - I've never liked it.

WhispersOfWickedness · 26/11/2013 19:38

DH was raging today about there not actually being a lock on the bathroom door and WTF would removing the door handle do Grin

DoubleLifeIsALifeOfSorts · 27/11/2013 16:51

Hey I got quoted in the Daily Fail and the Sun [cries]

Ah medja fame at last!
