This programme has replaced 'Justin's House' as the one dd wants to watch on repeat over and over again. At first I was delighted but now i'm starting to think back to Justin's house with a certain fondness. Maybe because it was three times as long so I could get more jobs done in one episode doesn't use tv as a babysitter ever oh no

BeanoNoir · 22/11/2013 12:53

dd's also obsessed with the one t and t book we have. I may have to hide it soon.

naturelover · 22/11/2013 12:55

I find the programme annoying but my children ADORE this programme. Not sure why but it has totally captured their imagination. They love the books too. I don't mind the books.

Cherrypie32 · 22/11/2013 13:29

What's with the theme of moving house? They bang on about it in every episode I've seen.

CommanderShepard · 22/11/2013 13:31

I clearly have ishoos (because we moved quite a bit at T&T's age) but the housemoving subplot I find really quite upsetting. The house prospectus hidden under the sofa was just horrible.

DungunGirl · 22/11/2013 13:52

My 4 year and 2 year old are obsessed with it! I don't have any strong feelings one way or another really.... if they like it, so be it!

nataliel26 · 22/11/2013 14:16

Totally agree that people are missing the point. This programme is for young children and is based on the books from the 1960s. Its a very sweet and innocent programme. Nothing sexist about it at all.

Some adults are taking it too seriously and missing the point.

ZooCheur · 22/11/2013 14:18

The kid loves it. I was less impressed that when there was a hole in the roof Topsy was watching her toy rabbit in the washer whilst Tim helped with the repairs - but it's on when I'm making tea so I haven't seen any others.

DancingLady · 22/11/2013 14:24

DD (3) loves T&T and Katie Morag. Talks about them all the time, looks forward to watching... :) We have some of the T&T books too, and she loves those.

Bumpsadaisie · 22/11/2013 14:28

TBH I am just pleased there is something new on Cbeebies - and drama as well. What other drama is there? Only Grandpa in my pocket springs to mind (and arrrggggghhh to that!)

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 22/11/2013 14:32

The fact that it is for young children is exactly why they should be extra careful about gender stereotypes. And books written decades ago are routinely updated- e.g for racism, for cultural reference points.

IfNotNowThenWhen · 22/11/2013 14:32

Pah! If you want normal and everyday you want Postman Pat.
Lovely setting in Yorkshire , lots of friendly small talk (cheerio!). The books of Postman Pat are genius. I have been collecting them from charity shops for years. My favorite is one where Pat has a bit of a hunt for a child's missing dolly, and halfway through feels a bit hungry, so sits down on a hillside to eat his pack up, and then feels a bit sleepy so has a nap. No narrative point to that, just, you know, slow boring detail in a pleasant setting. Ah!
I think in that one, Pat find Ted Glens rabbiting knife down the side of Mrs Thompsons sofa, and Mrs Thompson looks a bit flustered...
I love any children's book where characters have rabbiting knives, me.

MoominMammasHandbag · 22/11/2013 14:43

I always quite liked the fact that in the books Topsy was the feisty one whereas Tim was a bit of a wuss. I also remember quite a good one where they made friends with a little girl in a wheelchair.
I haven't seen the TV series though, mercifully our CBeebies days are behind us.

Dancergirl · 22/11/2013 14:51

I thought it was going to be animated. Why not do that instead of bloody actors?!

There already is an animated series. I've got it on VHS somewhere, we loved it when the dds were small. Each episode was an animated version of one of the books.

BsshBossh · 22/11/2013 14:52

It's the only show my 5yo DD will watch on CBeebies now. She loves it so that's fine with me (though when I watch it with her, the Dad in the show annoys the hell out of me!).

Dancergirl · 22/11/2013 14:53

Maybe not the newer ones, but I still have the book where Topsy and Tim go on holiday to the Lake district, and nobody will take them hill walking so they decide to go on their own and they get lost. Eventually they find a shop in another village and I think they can remember the name of their hotel so their parents are tracked down

LOVED that one - it's a classic T and T Smile

'Your dad will dust your breeches' Smile

You forgot the bit with the dog, the shopkeepers manage to track down where they were staying by recognising the dog.

Dancergirl · 22/11/2013 14:56

I've also got 2 very rare T and T books -

T and T in Belgium
T and T in Holland

Bet they'd fetch a fortune on Ebay now!

daughterofafarmer · 22/11/2013 15:00

Loved the books growning up, DD (2.8) loves them too.

Can't stand the TV program, however DD loves it.

However I quite like the fact that the house is a tip, the walls at the top of the stairs are marked etc etc. The roof leaks, Dad keeps losing his keys, everyone speaks at once, child on sofa jumping with shoes on. It looks like a normal family home and not one 'made' for TV.

daughterofafarmer · 22/11/2013 15:01

I agree Grandpa in my pocket...arghhhh! Acting is so bad.

Ticktock80 · 22/11/2013 15:23

Haven't seen it. But just read the word "hubby".

HappyHippyChick · 22/11/2013 15:28

I won't watch it because in the trailer Tim calls Topsy "Twin Topsy". No, her name is Topsy. 101 of twin parenting is don't call them "twin". Grrrrrrrrr.

I'm not certain because I haven't seen that episode but I think they are talking to the life size cardboard cutout that they're holding as the 'twin Topsy' rather than actual Topsy.

Sophiathesnowfairy · 22/11/2013 15:29

My DS loves it and I like the fact they have wet washing drying in the lounge just like me!

TheEponymousGrub · 22/11/2013 16:10

Dropsy and Dim!! That is hilarious, Nennypops; love it.

Glittermud · 22/11/2013 16:29

The sexism is awful and inexcusable in this day and age. I don't think that something is quality just because my kids love it either. They love picking their noses and hearing the word 'poo' too. Hardly discerning.

GreenShadowInTheLibrary · 22/11/2013 16:34

Mine are too old to watch CBeebies so I didn't even realise it existed, but I've just caught an episode on iplayer and tbh, find it pretty typical of most the families I know.

OK, so maybe plenty of mums fix the leak in the ceiling and some dads do the washing or stay at home, but this is still not the norm. Children like to see what they experience at home and I'm sure mine would have loved this when younger.

Of course we still need some programs and books demonstrating girls and women doing DIY/going out to work etc and some SAHDs, but not all the time. There is room for a variety of different types of families on TV.

Having said that - OP, you are definitely NBU to hate Playdate!
