Photograph, posted on Facebook (and, therefore, in my eyes, endorsed) by a teacher of a group of people dressed up for Halloween. One person, "blacked up" (face mask, brownish make up on neck etc) one person "whitened up" (face mask, White make up) and a third person, also made up but in a brown colour. "Black man" wearing track suit, trainers and lots and lots of jewellery. "White woman" in curlers, Primark hoodie, track suit bottoms, heels. "Brown person" (an adult) in a child's buggy with a bottle, dummy and carrying what looks like a lunch box.

AIBU to think that this is racist and stereotyping of the worst kind. That they are dressed as a mixed race "chav" (not a word I would use but...) low income family who bottle feeds their baby, dresses badly and pushes a very old child around, who are all overweight etc.

Now I know these people. The area we live in is NOT at all multi cultural so there is unlikely to have been anyone offended at the party. But I am offended.

FWIW at least one of these people works with children on a daily basis.

Mumsnet, over to you.

Fuck me, ain,t the white. folks got enough cultural icons to dress up as?
You gotta take ours? Cha! All take, take, take.

Seriously, I find it offensive, find it hard to believe any right thinking, intelligent person would think otherwise.

Oh dear. Why the passive aggressive strike through? Too afraid to actually call me a cunt?

Have you been employed in that setting since the implementation of the 2010 Equality Act? I think you'd find those companies are now obliged by law to have an equality and diversity policy, monitor data and to implement it properly.

MrsdeVere thanks.

EduCated · 10/11/2013 17:26

I thought a voilet was like a frilly sheet thing Wink

5madthings · 10/11/2013 17:30

fucking hell i would be worried about the common sense and intelligent level of a teacher ffs who thought this was a reasonable thing to post.

and most workplaces whether private or public have a policy linked to your contract about the use of social media. my dp doesnt even have fb but some of his colleagues do and there was a disciplinary issue recently re slagging off of a workcolleague on fb.

even schools have bits in the home/school contracts now so parents/students cannot bring the school into disrepute or slander them etc.

Look at Downton Abbey Edu Anyway....... enough of that Grin
ilovesnooty I think you will probably find that it is not used that much either. Its in place for protection but as a general rule people know how to behave in a professional capacity. Im sure you do some some people (of all colours and races) using it to their advantage/gain.

Mylovelyboy · 10/11/2013 17:34

MrsDeVere I do not think of you as being over privileged and living in a bubble. Its your tone when you (speak/type). All authoritarian.

Mylovelyboy · 10/11/2013 17:37

Tinlegs but black people are not thought of like that anymore. We are all equal black/white.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 10/11/2013 17:38

Tinlegs but black people are not thought of like that anymore. We are all equal black/white.

Yeah of course and racism doesn't exist anymore Hmm

Tinlegs · 10/11/2013 17:39

We are all equal under the law. However, we do not have "equal" history and racism does exist in some parts of the world / country / internet. On that basis, it is offensive.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 10/11/2013 17:39

I think you'll find the companies have a legal obligation to implement it.

And since you argue that what you do in your own time or commit to social media is not your work place's business I have no real belief in your understanding of appropriate professional behaviour or its relevance to ones general conduct and employer's reputation.

mrsdevere but you are posh with your second home on the coast.. Grin

mylovely do you truly think there is equality...that there is no racism and discrimination anymore...

ilovesooty · 10/11/2013 17:42

We are all equal? A big difference in terms of the law and reality.

How naive you are. But then you don't believe in policies which address the needs of minorities or ensure they are protected, do you?

ConfusedPixie · 10/11/2013 17:44

YANBU, it's tasteless and racist. And dressing up as a 'chav' is just dickish. If it came up on my FB feed I'd post the picture to reddit and watch it go viral.

Tinlegs · 10/11/2013 17:44

The fact that this does not disturb you, mylovelyboy, is proof that here is racism in the world. You may not be racist, I don't know. But your views are making me uncomfortable.

OP posts:
ilovesooty · 10/11/2013 17:44

Those policies are not supposed to be in place as a box ticking exercise. They are supposed to be used and implemented in the workplace.

Chippednailvarnish · 10/11/2013 17:47

Are us nasty immigrants still stopping you from claiming your God given right of a council house Mylovely?

ConfusedPixie · 10/11/2013 17:47

Sorry, just read the rest:

"but black people are not thought of like that anymore. We are all equal black/white."

You must be fucking joking really? And racism is not just black and white. What about those of us who are Asian? Thankfully I don't look particularly Middle Eastern to the average Brit as I've seen the abuse my Iranian father gets walking through a predominantly white town, he's lived there for 25 years and still gets called a "fucking Paki" and told to "Go back home".

This is from strangers, if you really like I can start listing the things said to me throughout my school and work life there by peers and colleagues and then you can tell me again that there is no fucking racism in this country.

ilovesooty · 10/11/2013 17:50

I bet she thinks there's no homophobic either. Or ageism.

ilovesooty · 10/11/2013 17:51

Or disability discrimination.

Mylovelyboy · 10/11/2013 17:53

tinlegs dont be uncomfortable (blimey im not an ogre). Grin Of course there is racism about. Massively so, but I do think in alot of cases the word racism is overused and also used out of context. And also alot of people are offended when there is no offence to be taken.
ilovesnooty I know how to conduct myself very well in the work place and out of it. Thank you very much. I am now 47 years old and have been working since 16. Never ever had any issues with regard to practices at work. I dont know anyone I have ever worked with has to be honest. And I have worked for some big name companies. (in the insurance world that is)

PlateSpinningAtAllTimes · 10/11/2013 17:55

confusedpixie I've been told 'go back home' etc......I'm British white, but I have oval eyes so have had masses of racist abuse because some people THINK I'm 'forrin'!! Racism is definitely alive and kicking.

Op, I am also uncomfortable about this photo- both the blacking up and the implication that mixed race couples are 'chavs' etc. particularly coming from a teacher. I do think that us teachers have a social responsibility to our pupils to not be racist twats.
