Just posted on Facebook by a poet friend of mine

The whistles could be heard
Along the trenches below
The young men weren't ready
But they had to go
Some held photos
Of loved ones back home
They charged together
Yet died alone
The bulkets n bombs
rang loud in their heads
Yet forward they ran
Running over the dead
A war against tyranny and for freedom they fought
A price was to be paid
Yet could never be bought
But their actions
Should be remembered
Even tho with regret
By wearing The Poppy
LEST WE FORGET

By Billy Isherwood

Love this poem......it's been in his head several days and this morning was finally written down.

RTOT please.

Mignonette · 11/11/2013 10:54

If you haven't read all the other threads then of course my reaction would seem excessive. But unless you have, you aren't commenting in full possession of.

OrlandoWoolf · 11/11/2013 10:55

Can you explain why they are unprofessional or the code of conduct they break?

OrlandoWoolf · 11/11/2013 10:56

I have read them.

Read the statements made- I cannot refer to them here because you do not want this thread to be quoted. So read the whole thread and the others. There are people on here who read other stuff under a previous name in which comments about baby killers were thrown about by posters including the one being referred to here.

fluffiphlox · 11/11/2013 10:58

Anyway, that 'poem' is doggerel at best and the Great War was not a 'war against tyranny'.
I wear a poppy in remembrance of the poor sods in both world wars who as conscripts didn't get a choice.

'Babykillers' that's ludicrous and untrue!

Last I checked, making unkind remarks about a profession wasn't against the law and MN may well have deleted those posts anyway.

Bloody hell, I've seen people make worse insults directly towards other posters than that - and I mean really nasty ones which I would not like to repeat. Did you check the posting histories of those and what jobs they did, so you could tell your friends about them too?

So what, are the armed forces above criticism? What makes them such a protected profession? The jingoism and militarism which has tainted the poppy appeal in recent years has helped to create this perception. I think that's a very dangerous development in any free society.

Bowlersarm · 11/11/2013 11:11

Geckos you may stand by what you said. But not enough not to do a name change, and try and upset as many posters as possible on other threads.

secondchances · 11/11/2013 11:12

I wore a poppy at work yesterday. Not wearing one today but did take part in the silence. The "anti-poppy" thing kind of threw me a bit.

OrlandoWoolf · 11/11/2013 11:12

Have a look at TES to see what teachers think.

Geckos48 · 11/11/2013 11:15

I named changed because of a different reason, it has nothing to do with my opinion on the armed forces or on the McCanns, if it did, I would probably not continue being so forward with them would I! M

Geckos48 · 11/11/2013 11:16

I would hope TES is not an accurate view of what teachers think, same as I hope ARRSE is not an accurate view of what soldiers think, though I have my doubts on both counts (having met plenty of soldiers and teachers).

GoshAnneGorilla · 11/11/2013 11:20

I suggest some people cast their eyes onto the ARRSE forum and see the tone of the discussion there. Not that ARRSE is alone in this, many professional forums are similar.

Oh and if everyone who said nasty things about people in the public eye were deemed unfit for their jobs, the country would be at a standstill.

clam · 11/11/2013 11:26

Missing the point, as ever.

siblingrevelry · 11/11/2013 11:27

I'm very grateful to the career soldiers too, not just the men who didn't have a choice-just because being in the military is their choice, it doesn't detract from the fact that their job is hard and they often go 'above and beyond', and the price paid when their 'career' goes wrong is huge.

For me it's the same as with nurses and other vocational careers. They've chosen it, but I still feel bad that they have shitty wages and long hours in often shitty conditions.

As has been mentioned, I'm glad they do it so I don't have to.

OrlandoWoolf · 11/11/2013 11:27

I bet if Cameron or Tory MPs could post anonymously, they would bring their profession into disrepute. Or if the Duchess of Cambridge was allowed to say what she really thought.

Maybe they do:)
