To hoover at 9.30pm?

DH and I live in a terraced house, and both work very long hours at times. Now is one of those times. I just got home and the house needs hoovering. DH is away, and I like to get the chores out of the way when he is so we can spend time together at the weekend. Also, it is always nice to come home to a clean house (he does the same for me). Can I hoover now? Neighbours have no dc...even so, is it a bit inconsiderate?

I live in a terrace and someone hoovering at 9.30pm wouldn't bother me in the least.

There was a thread on here some time ago with someone was asking about hoovering at 7.30am. Everyone seemed to think that was perfectly reasonable, but personally I'd be pretty put out if my neighbours hoovered at that time. So horses for courses I suppose.

I lived in horrible flat once with neighbours either side and in flat underneath. So noisy all the time. Remember neighbour on right hoovered all the sodding time. Every few hours. I'm sure she had a thing with her Hoover.?Confused

Of course I mean vacuum cleaner.

hallowisitmeyourelookingfor · 07/11/2013 22:38

YANBU if it's not going to take half an hour.

holidaysarenice · 07/11/2013 22:42

Half nine is fine for a 5 minute job. If you started diy at this time its a bit different.

Especially if you no no babies are in bed.

Heymacarena · 07/11/2013 22:46

YANBU to run the vacuum cleaner around at that time - I am sure most people will still be up.

however YABU to refer to it as a hoover- unless it is a Hoover brand vacuum cleaner.

Grin

Just one of my 'things'!

I'm amazed that I'm in the minority here. I don't think that YWBU to Hoover at 9.30pm.

Knocking walls down or moving furniture is a different matter but hoovering would be fine IMO.

cerealqueen · 07/11/2013 22:49

If I hadn't got kids I would, if your neighbours have kids then don't.

As a compromise, buy one of those rechargeable carpet sweepers, then you can have a quick tidy up anytime.

Artandco · 07/11/2013 22:50

I would. We are usually out the house at 7am and back 8/9pm. This can be mon-fri but some weekends also or we are away. Our flat would never be hoovered otherwise.

We do try to not Hoover/ have washing machine on / loud music after 11pm. But 9pm no problem

Dubjackeen · 07/11/2013 22:59

YABU...Wink...Hoover versus wine and tv... No contest.

Naoko · 07/11/2013 23:01

I would. But then my neighbours are loud as hell, so they can bloody well live with my hoover and washing machine.

beals692 · 07/11/2013 23:02

I think it's fine to hoover as long as you're done before 10pm. If you know your neighbours have got kids that will be in bed earlier than that, I would do it earlier in the evening. Yes, neighbours are likely to be home in the evening but that's the time that most people are home so the only opportunity most people have to do the hoovering!

In my defence, I am very 'relaxed' about housework so my neighbours are only occasionally troubled by the sound of a hoover! :-)

LocoParentis · 07/11/2013 23:29

My neighbours don't have children but I know they go to bed at 9pm. I live in a terrace and try to be considerate. I wouldn't hoover later than 8pm, even tho we don't get in till half seven often.

bebanjo · 07/11/2013 23:39

I live in a terraced and I wouldn't bother me one bit. The house next door is empty, come live next door to me.

Notcontent · 08/11/2013 00:00

Vacuuming is surprisingly loud actually...

Viviennemary · 08/11/2013 00:05

It is a bit late if your next door neighbour can hear you. I was a bit irritated at somebody mowing a lawn about 9.30 am. far too early though I wasn't still in bed I did want peace and quiet at that time of day.

samandi · 08/11/2013 08:43

It's pretty late to be hoovering. I would be annoyed. But then our upstairs neighbours have been known to hoover and do their washing at 11 p.m. Hmm
