to ask if there's actually anything to do in Bournemouth

I'm going to visit 22 year old DD in mid November, Friday to Sunday. She's working down there for a few months, but doesn't know the area well.

Is there actually anything to do in Bournemouth at this time of year?

Good idea Reeling! It starts on the 14th November.

There will also be ice skating in the Gardens from the 16th November.

LocalEditorBournemouth · 03/11/2013 00:06

Rubbish.Shock

There's beer and sausages! Grin

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 00:08

Has anyone had breakfast at the café in Kings Park?
Bloody great, not much else there though unless you're walking the dog Grin

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 00:09

I like the German market Smile

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 00:10

I've never been in the balloon Sad

LocalEditorBournemouth · 03/11/2013 00:14

I'm desperately trying to think of something else to do at Kings Park apart from walk the dog and eat breakfast. Watch football? Go jogging?

Is the breakfast massive? I love a big fry up.

MumOfTheMoos · 03/11/2013 00:21

There's a nice fish restaurant on the beach...

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 00:25

Yep, great big fry up. Grin
I go there with the dog, I don't jog or go to the football though!

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 00:29

Is that the Harry Ramsden's MumOfTheMoos?

Florabeebaby · 03/11/2013 07:04

Ice skating in the gardens! Yey!

vole3 · 03/11/2013 07:19

The Cream Doughnut at 95 Commercial Road (near the upper gardens) used to be a favourite cafe after shopping.

Some great events are lusted here:
artsbournemouth.org.uk/whats-on/

I like to get a beach hut, they are £8.50 off season, with gas stove so you can make some food and watch the sea
www.bournemouth.gov.uk/LeisureCultureLibraries/SeafrontBeaches/BeachHuts/BeachHutsforhire.aspx

Cafés that are good to sit for ages and read are urban reef, urban beach, south coast roast, Boscanova.

Boscombe vintage market is on the 1st sat of the month in Boscombe Royal Arcade

Dance south west in the town centre has lots of classes on, you can drop in for a one off.

Worth checking the BIC / pavilion website as there are all sorts of performances and exhibitions taking place.

LocalEditorBournemouth · 03/11/2013 09:04

Seeing as I've got so many lovely locals cornered in one place, please pop over to the Mumsnet Local Bournemouth & Poole site

We have a meet up coming up, although I'm wondering if we should change it to ice skating and beer at the Christmas market. Grin

Great idea about the beach hut Lililly. I love the beach in winter.

FrenchRuby · 03/11/2013 09:20

I second not going to boscombe, it's jut depressing now, only one in every 4 shops are actually open now. But the vintage shops in pokesdown are adorable.

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 09:51

The market in the Arcade isn't on anymore.

It's back there again. Think it was on yesterday so the next one will be December.

reelingintheyears · 03/11/2013 10:04

Is it, dam, I like the vintage market, I thought they were told they couldn't have it there anymore, I have a friend who had a stall there.

LocalEditorBournemouth · 03/11/2013 10:06

I remember reading somewhere that it had been cancelled but I'm sure I saw recently it was back on.

I'm going to google!

LocalEditorBournemouth · 03/11/2013 10:07

Mynewmoniker · 03/11/2013 11:05

Is there a special Christmas event with beach huts being decorated? ...or did I dream it Hmm

PaulineWhatsername · 03/11/2013 11:25

I think I'll need to extend my stay! Who'd have thought there'd be so much for us to do. DD is busy preparing our schedule.

Thanks all Thanks

I think the beach huts will become light pods as part of the Christmas Festival in the Gardens.

Glad we could help Pauline. Smile

Reef Encounter often gets overlooked! It's between Urban Beach and Boscombe Pier, on Sea Road.
Great food at very reasonable prices. Very child and dog friendly too :) Lots of games for kids and owner will present your dog with a gravy bone!

I love the growing character of Pokesdown (although I admit I am biased as I live there!). Crooked Book in Pokesdown is great - cafe (dog friendly) which also sells all manner of second-hand/vintage stuff.

Life is slowly being breathed back into Boscombe itself. Plans are going ahead to re-develop as flats the upper part of the Arcade (look up and see the beautiful windows). I'm sure this will attract more people and businesses to the arcade. I know someone who has recently opened a gallery in the arcade and it is full of fantastic stuff - but sadly not much footfall at the mo.

I agree the boscombe arts fair was a bit of a flop!

There are also plans to re-design the precinct - if you are in the Sovereign Centre, the plans are on one of the empty shop front windows, next to H&B or Claire's?

And thank god for the charity shops - they're what's kept the area going over the past few years apart from primark Some really interesting ones opening up in the precinct and on Christchurch road...

Boscombe Pier and the green spaces in town are beautiful. I chatted with the head gardens guy recently and Boscombe/Bournemouth have been winning lots of awards for their green spaces :)

Wow, sorry OP if I've slightly hijacked your post! I'm just generally thrilled at seeing Boscombe/Pokesdown emerge with all its quirkiness and character :)

p.s. I thought the Aquarium was great, as did my godson (3) when we took him to see it...

LocalEditorBournemouth · 03/11/2013 16:48

Threesteps- I don't suppose I could persuade you to write some reviews on Local for the places in Boscombe you mentioned could I? They sound great!

I can offer Wine or Brew in return. Smile
