Animals vs humans

AIBU to think if faced with choosing a pet over a human (even if a stranger), you should choose the human?

The idea was brought up in another thread and put in life or death situation. Building on fire contains your pet and a stranger. You could only save one, who would it be?

I had a dog, Ralph, I cried my heart out when he died 3 years ago. The only dog I wasn't scared of! But I can't imagine leaving a person to die instead, no matter how my heart would break.

But what if the child wasbt able to be got to? Should we leave the dog because I couldn't get your child?

Or would you kill a pet out of bitterness that no one could rescue your child?

curlew · 02/11/2013 15:32

"Really, how dare you. The person risked their own life to save something dear to them. They owe you fuck all."

Really? They deliberately left my child to die while saving their dog. And you say they owe me fuck all?

curlew · 02/11/2013 15:33

"But what if the child wasbt able to be got to? Should we leave the dog because I couldn't get your child?

No. The point was that a person would choose to save their dog rather than my child. No other what ifs.

SharpLily · 02/11/2013 15:34

I'm afraid I'm looking at it as saving a life, not a human or animal life, just a life. My dog feels fear, pain, love, jealousy etc. So to me his life is as valuable as any other.

trish5000 · 02/11/2013 15:34

When a person is older, generally they rely more and more on people to give them a helping hand, or even in old peoples homes. If I were a person who would prefer to save their pet, I really and truly would nt tell too many people when they are older. As a pet is not going to be the person seeing to your personal care.

curlew · 02/11/2013 15:35

""Because some people are like Curlew. They deserve to be burnt alive."

Ouch - easy, Outraged. We dog savers were looking like much nicer people until that!"

You weren't, you know!

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2013 15:36

No they didn't deliberately Lear your child to save a dog. They saves their family.

You'd so the same. Your child is your family. A dog is their family.neither should have to die but someone will choose to save their family over anyone else's.

SharpLily · 02/11/2013 15:36

"They deliberately left my child to die while saving their dog. And you say they owe me fuck all?"

Since when is a child something one is owed? Since when do I have these sort of obligations to random strangers? If there were no dog in the equation and I went in but didn't manage to get to your child, do I still 'owe' you something?

SharpLily · 02/11/2013 15:38

"You weren't, you know!"

We really were. The stiff knickers judgyness and poo throwing was all on one side up to that point.

Imsosorryalan · 02/11/2013 15:39

I'd be interested to know how many dog savers actually have children?
Or is the dog a replacement child?

trish5000 · 02/11/2013 15:41

Outraged. Are you not a childminder?

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2013 15:41

Loving how if your house burns down and you loose everything. Your home, your treasured possessions the photons of your family yet you still "owe" some complete stranger for daring to save the one thing you could.

curlew · 02/11/2013 15:43

You're forgetting that valuing the life of a dog over a child is in itself reprehensible. You can't look like the nicer people holding that view.

What about other pets? Cat? Rat? Some people think rats are as intelligent as dogs. Would you save your pet rat before someone else's child?

Oh, and if all lives are equally valuable, would you save your dog before your own child?

PrincessFlirtyPants · 02/11/2013 15:43

What do they owe you, curlew a dead dog?!

Gileswithachainsaw · 02/11/2013 15:45

I would save who I could. Or die bloody trying.

No sense in everyone dying in case people the you made a choice.

livingzuid · 02/11/2013 15:46

Lots have children I think you will find.

And Trish - at least the dog or cat won't be circling like a vulture waiting for the old person to die. Pets are a huge comfort to older people when they often have no one.

Strumpetron · 02/11/2013 15:48

Really? They deliberately left my child to die while saving their dog. And you say they owe me fuck all?

Yes, they never owed you anything in the first place. They were under no obligation to save your child. Why would they put whom you love over who they love?

SharpLily · 02/11/2013 15:49

"You're forgetting that valuing the life of a dog over a child is in itself reprehensible."

Forgetting? Er, I never remembered it in the first place. I'm afraid I completely disagree with you. Hitler was a child once - would his life have been better saved than my dog? You see black and white, I only see grey.

Again, you have the right to value human life over animal life, and I wouldn't dream of trying to change your mind, but I have equal liberty to make my own value judgements, even if they don't match your own.

The difference is that I haven't called you reprehensible or cast any other aspersions upon your character. Although I'm starting to think you're not very nice...

MardyBra · 02/11/2013 15:50

I'm very bemused by all the pet savers congratulating themselves on how much "nicer" they are. You really are not.

I'd be tempted to do the same as you Curlew. not sure if I could go through with it, even though some of you think I'm a n evil witch for not saving the ickle fluffy animals.

By the way, I never give to animal charities either. If there are finite resources, I'd rather see money focussed on human causes.

livingzuid · 02/11/2013 15:51

Curlew you are being judgemental for no reason. A life is a life. You sound deranged for going to shoot an innocent dog.

But I also don't think you have read this thread. I'm getting tired of repeating myself to the holier than thou brigade.

SharpLily · 02/11/2013 15:52

I never congratulated myself for this until some people on this thread made themselves look rather unpleasant, which made some of the rest of us look great by comparison.

Like it or not, Mardy, apart from one particular post, the insults and unpleasantness have all come from one side.

fifi669 · 02/11/2013 15:52

To the pet savers..... Who would you save your pet or cousin you see once a year?

OP posts:
SharpLily · 02/11/2013 15:53

"By the way, I never give to animal charities either. If there are finite resources, I'd rather see money focussed on human causes."

But I'm sure you're grateful for guide dogs and other assistance animals?

pianodoodle · 02/11/2013 15:53

The point was that a person would choose to save their dog rather than my child. No other what ifs.

Someone has said they would be able to look a family member in the eye and say they rescued their dog rather than a child or adult.

I'd kill the dog.

Writerwannabe83 · 02/11/2013 15:54

I have direct debits to pay out to two charities every month; one is a Cat Rescue Charity and the other is the NSPCC. They both get the same amount of money Grin

I guess that means I'm not 100% evil Grin

There has been a very recent bereavement in my family and the final decision was made that all donations made by others would be forwarded to the National Dogs Trust as opposed to a charity that is there to aid humans. This hasn't gone down well with some family members.... Hmm
