To turn off The Escape Artist when I realised it was yet another male serial killer story

To feel that this storyline men killing women is on tv nearly every night of the week now - different detective, different barrister, same story. That there is complete failure of imaginative story telling on tv. And that male violence against women is not entertainment.

I don't watch much telly at the minute so I'm not sure how much variety is out there!

To be fair though, if it's about a serial killer, they are predominantly male so I'd expect that.

Nope, YANBU. It is tedious and depressing. There's an argument that it reflects society,of course, but it's still ridiculous to see this stuff non-stop. What pees me off more is that so many people seem to be completely desensitised to it.

No I'm with you. Too depressing and boring. I also won't watch Ripper Street or Luther. Just seems like if there is a female character on tv these days they will be raped murdered and mutilated before the first ad break.

It's an opportunity for script writers to get all moralistic about the BAD PEOPLE who get their jollies from porn about sexually motivated murder while making mainstream TV entertainment about sexually motivated murder. Tennant, whose Richard II I enjoyed earlier in the week, drops massively in my estimation for anything to do with this. There was that foul programme last year, which I managed ten minutes of, with Gillian Anderson ("The Fall"? Something set in Ireland, anyway) which was the same: lots of shots helpless women, preferably whom have earlier been seen nude, being killed. It's foul, and the BBC needs to give itself a stern talking to.

It's possible to make police procedurals without having women being killed by sexually motivated murderers.

Haven't watched this, but yes, I notice titillatingly-rendered violence against women in graphic details is offered up more and more as entertainment.

I couldn't watch that recent one with Jamie Dornan after a few episodes. Its tone was all wrong.

The Fall was ridiculous. There were threads on here which raved about it and I couldn't see it. Completely gratuitous nudity and violence. And Gillian Anderson was lauded as this wonderfully feminist character. And although she acted brilliantly, the character itself was two dimensional coming out with nonsensical and hackneyed supposedly feminist statements.

I used to watch Criminal Minds when Mandy Patinkin was in it, but ended up sickened at the naked women on a slab, women is victims stories every week which seemed to try and increase the amount of violence and sadism as the series went on.

I am sick of it, frankly.

I don't think you can just say its women's bodies in Silent Witness, its bodies generally. Which it would be since the programme is about pathologists.

Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds because he felt all the violence against women was misogynist.

Not saying it's perfect, but the SyFy channel probably seems to have the most series with decent female characters who don't end up dead.

Yes I read that about Mandy Patinkin. Good on him.

I would have watched it but felt the advert gave too much of the plot away so what would be left to see?
Also, not friends with David Tennant since he quit Doctor Who...he's much less attractive now.

Friday We're going to see Richard II when it transfers to the Barbican. Can't wait. We also saw Much ado which was superb. It was clear from the trailer that The Escape Artist wasn't going to be something I'd like so I gave it a wide body swerve, watching the excellent Wrong Mans on BBC 2 then rewatching the last episode of The Newsroom again just to feel happy.

YANBU I hadn't seen any reviews and from the name thought it might be a good drama so the bit where he found his wife murdered and son hidden in the floor was a real shock and made me feel really sick ( I started half way through).

I'm also fed up with all this murder and gore. Would like any recommendations for good drama or comedy on TV. We rarely watch anything live now and rely on BT vision but often can't even find anything decent on that!

Downton is dull, we like Homeland but suspect it's going to be the same thing all over again, Doc Martin is easy entertainment but not really challenging enough to be interesting... what else do you like?

Crime stories are perennially popular - ITV3 is full of them. There are all sorts eying shown all the time.

Is the issue here a blip in programming, meaning one channel has had too many too similar in a short time (a criticism which coul also be levelled at gardening, cooking, make over or talent shows)? Or that there needs to be greater control over depictions of violence?

Since the death of Mary Whitehouse, is there a need for a new high profile campaigner?

YANBU. In addition to what you say, it was also groaning with cliches about female virtue. He killed a woman nice, blonde, married pregnant mother.

And the battle is between the men, isn't it, this killer and his victim's husband. Somehow poor old Ashley J just doesn't figure at all.

I also wonder how we, as women, are supposed to feel, viewing it. Vulnerable and stalked? is there a male equivalent plotline in TV and film?

I hadn't seen a trailer and didn't realise it was about a serial killer. I kept expecting it to be a case of 'wrongnw accused strange acting person.'

Its actually given me the creeps. I wasn't at all expecting the scene with the wife, and the son in the box got to me.

Unfortunately I keep remembering the guy at the window. When its dark that's not good. I've been anxious recently and half wonder whether I'm abnormally freaked out or if it has that effect on others. I really didn't like being near the windows in the dark last night.

I love David tennant and up until the wife bit thought it might be ok.

I did the same, watched half then realised the acting was brilliant but the plot was hackneyed male serial killer/troubled hot shot lawyer shit and gave up.

YANBU - I didn't watch the Escape Artist but was really freaked out earlier this year by Ripper Street.

The scenes with the snuff films were horrendous and also, I thought it was incredibly ethically dubious to re-enact snuff films to moralise on snuff films...

Other than that, it's just lazy writing... oh let's revert to the damsel in distress trope AGAIN because that's not been done to death /sarcasm.
