Well you get the coolest bit and don't get any drips, so it make sense really.

I only do it at weddings or posh restaraunts. At home I slurp and drink the last bit from the bowl.

It avoids pouring it in your lap.

Nt sure what a damn fule is but I drink soap from a mug or off a lump of crusty bread, spoon straight in mouth once not to hot to have to do the puffy breath move.

I must admit that I do eat it like that - I can still remember my Dad teaching me that it was the 'correct' way to eat soup!

That said, I have had looks from a couple of commoners people

You scoop the soup away from you not towards you, and you still have the spoon slightly away from you so you don't get soup all over your mouth.
