The thought of the videos turn my stomach. The only people who want to watch them are sickoes and as an organisation that lets children join from the age of 13 (and they know that children alot younger use it) they should have better moral judgement.

I can't imagine what it does to the families of the victims to know that a video of their love one being murdered is doing the rounds on Facebook.

I just think the whole thing stinks!

I haven't had any of these horrible videos on my newsfeed... and if I saw them I would instantly block the content and remove the friend.

I think facebook have a moral obligation to remove these types of videos and images, although I do understand the difficulty in doing so when so many people upload videos themselves. Also I don't know anyone who has had their breastfeeding images blocked.

SPsTombRaidingWithCliff · 23/10/2013 00:38

I haven't had any of these show up on mine either and if I did I just wouldn't click on it.

FB can do as it pleases so it is. If you want to delete your account then go ahead. It wont change anything but you are free to do as you please.

Viviennemary · 23/10/2013 00:41

YANBU. I hate facebook and wish it would disappear of the face of the earth.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 23/10/2013 00:42

I didn't even know about the whole breast feeding photo issue. How do they police that?

Doubtfuldaphne · 23/10/2013 07:15

This is being discussed on lbc right now

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 23/10/2013 07:28

Nobody that I am friends with has ever, or would ever, seek out and share anything like the videos described on this thread so I have never encountered them.

Icannot understand the stance against breastfeeding pictures whilst violent videos are allowed, there is no justification for this whatsoever.

One thing I do take issue with is the repeated reference to this being shocking because Facebook is available to children. I would be just as badly affected if I viewed something like this as a 13 year old and I'm 30! They shouldn't be available for anyone to view, whether to condemn or not. You can't police the entire internet but Facebook most definitely can be, and is, policed. If they can take down nipple shots they cannot justify leaving up something like this.

sofadahl · 23/10/2013 07:44

I agree jelly. Facebook can't do as it pleases, there are laws that stop it showing child abuse video's. Why aren't murder video's covered by the laws.

As for leaving not making any difference , if everyone disgusted by this decision either suspended or deleted their account or even biycotted it for 5 days Facebook would soon get the message, but people care more for their online social life than they do about these video's and hide behind ' what can you do' and shrug.

DixonBainbridge · 23/10/2013 07:51

If Facebook won't police itself maybe the ISPs should block it so it can't be accessed.

I'm sure they'd change their mind quite quickly if they lost the advertising revenue of the whole UK.

Giggle78 · 23/10/2013 09:56

AgentZigZag Grin I never knew that but I am glad I do now! LOL!

So today they have U-turned on the decision? Am I right?

So can I get facebook back and feel happy that I stood up for what I really believe? What a result if its true!

TheFabulousIdiot · 23/10/2013 10:01

sofadahl - have you deleted your account then?

AgentZigzag · 23/10/2013 10:11

They have Giggle

I'm surprised they didn't mention it was sofadahl's threats that forced their hand, but we know the truth eh? Wink

They haven't really changed anything, how are they going to check the person is sharing any murders responsibly with an age appropriate audience? Hmm especially when most youngsters lie about their age.

It's a business, and with so many billions of users they don't have to be ethical or moral (in their mind).

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/10/2013 10:24

UrbaneLandlord - I suspect there are two main reasons why no-one is condemning the beheadings themselves, here on this thread. Firstly, I suspect that it is so obvious that it goes without saying that we condemn them, and secondly, this thread is about FB showing the videos, and what our reaction should be to that, not about the beheadings themselves and what our reactions to those are.

Of course these beheadings are vile and evil - I doubt you'd find anyone on MN who would disagree - and if you started a thread on it, I am sure it would be full of condemnation.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/10/2013 10:33

Plus, there is not a huge amount that most of us can do about the actual beheadings - beyond condemning them, and putting pressure on the Government to get them to put pressure on other governments - but we can each make a real decision about how we react to FB showing the videos - we have the option to delete our FB accounts, and to block/unfriend people who do share or comment on these videos.

Also - why shouldn't we, as parents, be concerned about very graphic content that our children might be exposed to? My dses are 16, 18 and 20, and I don't want them seeing this! I don't think that is being all 'ME, ME, ME', as you accused.

BlingBang · 23/10/2013 10:37

I use FB daily, I find it fantastic for keeping touch with family friends spread far and wide. I feel strongly about this though, hope FB have been listening to people's views on this.

Bad enough that these videos are out there to be watched if you search for them, but for a site like FB to endorse them and allow them for what would often be for entertainment is vile. Can't begin to imagine how the victims families must feel knowing their loved ones last awful moments have become everyday accepted entertainment.

PrincessChick · 23/10/2013 10:56

OP, YANBU, I'm deleting my account too. I don't want to be part of an online community that thinks it's ok for these videos to be accessed.

Yes, FB clearly state on their website that photos of mothers breastfeeding where the nipple can be seen are indecent.

Strange and sad times Sad

Mimishimi · 23/10/2013 12:26

I've never seen a link to a snuff video or one of a beheading on my newsfeed. I guess my FB friends don't watch that kind of stuff. If it's the user liking them or sharing them, block or defriend them.

fromparistoberlin · 23/10/2013 12:49

"I've looked through this thread and there is virtually no compassion or concern expressed for the victims of beheading themselves.

I think its implicit, I actually made a rather tasteless gag earlier upathread. Unfortunately adressing mans imhumanity to man, is not something I can do much about, wish I could!!!!

however there is so much disgust around this issue I strongly suspect that facebook will revert this decision

the more I think about it, the more fucked up it is that we can watch brutal murders on a fucking social networking site

hey ho

Bubbles1066 · 23/10/2013 14:59

I deleted my Facebook a while ago due to distressing content. Even one of my good friends was commenting on horribly stuff which came up on my newsfeed. Even the stills upset me. After seeing a still of a hung puppy I gave up and deleted my account. So no YANBU. I'm not stupid, I know this stuff goes on, I know how to use Goggleand in the correct context (news clips, journalist investigations etc) a very limited use of this material maybe acceptable. The correct context is not sandwiched between a picture of someone's new baby and a soft drinks ad. And don't get me started on the way Facebook bans nipples but not supposedly humorous pro rape jokes.
Actually being Facebook free is quite liberating. I have to actually text or ring people. It's nice!
