To NEVER listen to James O'Brien again. Disgusting treatment of a mother with an autistic son.

As the mother of a severely autistic DS I am disgusted by the way he spoke to the first caller on his show this morning.

He said words to the effect of that the mother 'doesn't try hard enough' with regards to her autistic son's behaviour.

I have loved JoB for the whole time he has been on LBC but thats it, he has shown his true colours now.

FUMING!!!!

so sorry I wasn't if its as you say then would agree with you. this comment sounds nasty and ignorant.

stillenacht · 22/10/2013 10:35

I was appalledHmm He is normally understanding and liberal but he was downright offensive. The mother stuck up for herself good for her, had it been me I probably would have burst into tears the way I'm feeling about autism at the moment.

Ignorant idiot is how I feel about him nowHmm

I haven't listened to the rest of the show. Had to turn the radio straight off as I felt sick and angry.

Perhaps you should email the radio station?

It might have more effect than them losing one listener.

stillenacht · 22/10/2013 10:38

I will do. Am off to a funeral nowHmm just need to check with someone else that my ears weren't deceiving me.

There's a Twitter thread going about the subject (not what he said) at the moment on both the LBC feed and his own. very short and a couple of ignorant comments on there though.

limitedperiodonly · 22/10/2013 11:55

I agree with a lot of James O'Brien's views (don't think this would be one of them) but really dislike his manner so rarely listen.

I didn't hear it, so won't be complaining, but hectoring someone for being useless by his standards sounds about right.

He's smug, and I even think that when I'm nodding along to what he's saying.

LeonardoAcropolis · 22/10/2013 12:11

He can be very goady, he does that to evoke strong reactions from his audience. Nick Ferrari does that too. He usually saves it for Mr Right-Wing-Sun-Reader, though, to show them up. Glad that Mum stuck up for herself.

DropYourSword · 22/10/2013 12:12

You bumped your thread after four minutes?!

LittleBairn · 22/10/2013 12:41

Is that you James? Who cares if a poster bumps there thread up once it's a fast moving forum.

I didn't hear the show but I'm saddened to hear there are still ignorant arseholes out there that think parents of autistic kids 'need to try harder'
Walk a mile in their shoes then you have the right to comment until the STFU.

SaucyJack · 22/10/2013 12:52

Didn't hear it (don't even know who is TBH), so I can't comment on whether his comments were justified or not.

I'm not horrified on the face of it tho. Birthing a child with ASD does not automatically make one a saint with exemplary parenting any more than birthing an NT child would.

x2boys · 22/10/2013 14:02

is that really the point drop your sword I am waiting for an autistic diagnosis for my son at the moment so its an emotive issue with me too I think op just wants to get her point across!

Gruntled · 22/10/2013 14:14

Didn't hear it this morning but doesn't he usually play Devil's Advocate to get more calls? Otherwise it would be everyone agreeing with everyone else and boring radio.
