£3 a coffee, 22 working days a month, 12 months a year = £792. Over 5 years = 3960. Land Registry Sept 2013 says average house price in UK is £166k, so that's just shy of 2.5%.

Ah see I don't drink coffee, so wouldn't really miss anything. But I have friends who regularly go to costa or starbucks.

I once did the sums for all the coffees, lunches and magazines and silly things i was buying in my 20s (single and no dcs) and it was a huge ammount, i had a heart attack.

But whats the point of regrets?

I know. Dh and I usually go for a coffee and scone about 3 times a week and it does add up. We don't drink alcohol, smoke or go out for meals though.

I drink gallons of coffee, but I would never buy it in a chain, nor most independents, they simply don't make it properly, use rubbish beans, are not fair trade, and don't clean their machine properly.

This makes me sound like a meanie but if by coffee you just mean the stuff you buy on your way to work or with your lunchtime sandwich rather than the stuff you have which is incidental to cake and socialising you might want to invest in a portable cafetiere.

Bodum do brilliant ones.As long as your work place can provide hot water you'll save vast amounts of money. They are not a faff to clean.

Why not drink coffee at home? I don't get this buying your morning coffee, its so....american.

Yes. I'm always at a loss as to how many people seen to need a hot drink between hone and work.

I've had to stop drinking in starbucks. My favorite coffee (large soyamilk cappuchino with vanilla syrup) costs more than a pub glass of wine!
(Not that I go along in the street with some wine in a paper cup!)

DH had a 2hr commute and didn't feel up to/have time for breakfast/coffee before he left at 6.30am. But was buying a coffee and bacon sandwich at a station on the way. It was about £10 per day So for xmas i bought him a pod coffee machine (£49 with a groupon voucher) and a 'hot mug' and when food shopping i bought 8 croissants for £1 and value cheese and cheep sliced ham. Monthly i would grate the cheese and make enough for a daily cheese and ham croissant, wrap in foil and freeze. Every morning DH would get up and first thing switch on the oven, bung in a croissant, make a nice coffee and put in his bag when he left 15 mins later. Then he would enjoy it whilst on the train. Saved us a fortune.

I never understood coffee tho. To paraphrase - I like my coffee like i like my men, tepid and weak...and afterwards i always think 'bluerch, why i did i put that in my mouth?' and just like men coffee smells way better than it tastes! Tea is truly the drink of kings

We average £7.50 of coffee a month. So that's £900 in my adult life so far. Not bad at all.

It is the best 1.90 I spend a day. I enjoy every drop and don't regret a penny.

Oh and i meant to say DH reckons the coffee AND breakfast is better, and it costs 78p all in! Which is waaaay better than a tenner.

I look at it differently. When I buy a £2 ish coffee, I feel as if I've had a treat. So I don't then buy other, more expensive treats like clothes, books, expensive make up, house things. We've cut down on virtually all the treats we had Pre dc and whilst I know I'm still lucky to afford this treat, it does stop me going mad. We all need to feel indulged.

I think that's a big difference tho BigBirthday to some people my dh for example who doesn't see them as a treat and just as a normal everyday expense. At one point i worked out he was spending £30 a day on coffees and lunch. I know lots of people who buy 3 or more 'posh' coffees a day.

Whereas old sack cloth and ashes martyr me, sees a hot choc and bit of cake as a monthly treat i really should get out more

I don't regret my coffees, I do spend less on them I'm not commuting anymore, but the coffees when meeting friends in coffee shops are money well spent.
I always wanted to run my own coffee shop though, I would serve really good coffee, and self made cakes, waffles and scones at a reasonable prices.

Never regret coffee, it's too good for that. My mother justifies purchases by saying how many coffees it old be worth. 'Oh it was a bargain, four coffees would be more'

My H doesn't get the coffee thing either.

I can't function without my morning costa so it's a necessary expense not a luxury I make tea in the work kitchen for the rest if the day so only buy one a day.

Waitrose give a free coffee a day to loyalty card holders....their latte is very good
