To never use the library again?

Because a book I've just been reading has what looks like blood and shit inside it?

I'm horrified! It looks like someone has bled on various pages as well as touched it with shitty hands. My first thought was chocolate but after the blood stuff I am not so hopeful.

I'm paranoid now and daren't touch any of the other books I got out :(

YABU.

Obviously that's disgusting and you should tell the library, but librarians don't actually look inside a book before they put it back on the shelf.

Still - boak

LittleMissWise · 15/10/2013 17:05

I stopped using the library years ago. One of the reasons was because DS1 really couldn't cope with the bogies that appeared to be stuck to the pages in the books he chose.

I don't know why people do it, its grim!

Completely reasonable if you are planning on modelling your life on Howard Hughes. If not, newsflash, the world is a dirty place. Take the book back, report the state of the book and get a new one out. YABU!

FriskyHenderson · 15/10/2013 17:08

ignores memories of using corners of plastic covered Sweet Valley High books to clear under my fingernails Ew that's gross [spew]

bundaberg · 15/10/2013 17:09

oh dear :(

take it back and they will dispose of it.

shocking that people treat public books this way. absolutely vile.

don't let it put you off using the library though, the vast majority of people don't do this!!!

AndysMildAdventures · 15/10/2013 17:15

Ugh, bogies! I'd never really considered before that people wouldn't treat the books nicely so this has blown my world apart (well, not really, but its shocked me). I'll tell the librarians when I take it back so they can sort it. I'm a bit gutted though because I got some textbooks out to read that I can't afford to buy and this has made me go all funny about reading them :( stupid blood poop person.

I wipe Library books and bang them upside-down to get out loose or lightly-adhering grim ........

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 15/10/2013 18:10

Librarians absolutely should be checking books before reshelving.

Flick through, upside down to find any abandoned bookmarks and a quick wipe.

Some come back stinking of fags or grease.

I once found bacon, raw, that had been used as a bookmark. And a lotto ticket. Called the borrower. Turns out she'd won a tenner which she donated right back to us.

Sukebind · 15/10/2013 18:24

I agree that the book sounds foul and it really should not be available for borrowing - maybe for burning, though.
Still, YABU to give up the library altogether - how on earth can you afford to buy every book you and your family want to read and, even if you can, where would you put them? Kindles/smart 'phones are OK for adults and older children but not so good for small children's books. OK, you could get a lot at charity shops etc. (as I do) but I guess you then run the risk of encountering further dried-on bodily fluids, old bits of food, and so on.
We go to the library every week - saves me a fortune and is a free way of entertaining the children after school for half an hour or so. Plus, it obviously encourages reading.

GatoradeMeBitch · 15/10/2013 18:24

I once dog-eared a library book page and the librarian chased me down the street to tell me off - so some of them do check Blush

AndysMildAdventures · 15/10/2013 18:28

Bacon as a bookmark?! Shock

I think I'm going to have to try and get past this because that's right, I definitely can't afford new books so I'd have to give up reading otherwise!

Grin at the librarian chasing!

Fine, don't use it again. You aren't obliged. Yes, books are probably not the cleanest, but I don't get sick every time I read a library book.

2tiredtocare · 15/10/2013 18:53

I bet someone read that book on the toilet

ILetHimKeep20Quid · 15/10/2013 18:58

Busy inner city branch, standard practice to do a quick check before reshelving, all part of the job! Can't reshelve and wait for a reader to spot damages. Also means you can pinpoint whodunnit or set books aside for recovering.

MomentForLife · 15/10/2013 19:00

Oh God that's grim. I've had lots of library books which included little extras. Bits of food, bogies, what looked like noodles or sick. I still use the library but do check DD's books first.

MrsDavidBowie · 15/10/2013 19:34

Yet everyone has survived decades of germs from library books. Grin

i love the bacon as a bookmark.
