No I know IANBU, but I am stunned by some of the posters on here at the moment. Mumsnet has turned into the opinion pages of the Daily Mail.

I hope so kitty. I mean the woman defending her right to use spastic as an insult. It beggars belief.

I am very familiar with PC, and overall I think it has a negative effect. People who are naturally intolerant and dictatorial and who dont like to be challenged or understand any view but their own though, find themselves a comfortable and narrow and self-righteous home there IME

coldwinter · 15/10/2013 13:31

True - have you tried the Daily Mail opinion pages?

OP posts:
nicename · 15/10/2013 13:32

Coldwinter - I missed that. Bloody hell. There are some gaslighters on here now though.

MadameDefarge · 15/10/2013 13:33

so using the word spastic as an insult should go unchallenged in the interests of freedom of speech?

True, I think you are mistaking someone disagreeing with you as a leftie conspiracy.

Must make daily life quite tricky. Do you see reds under the bed everywhere you go?

coldwinter · 15/10/2013 13:34

And nice, I actually understand decent posters getting snipy. Some of the things being justified are so awful.

OP posts:
YouTheCat · 15/10/2013 13:34

But it's the racists being intolerant. On a thread last week the Muslims were being attacked for approving (as a whole religion) of child marriages. It was farcical. Maybe that isn't racist because Islam is a religion and not a race but it was sure as hell bigoted.

No matter what various posters said, in reasoned debate, the OP carried on.

I will never think it is wrong to speak up against people who seek to harm others with their thoughtless, ill-educated words.

If that makes me part of the PC brigade Hmm then I accept the post and await my uniform.

MadameDefarge · 15/10/2013 13:34

you are talking bollock, True. Sorry, m'dear, but you are.

perceptionreality · 15/10/2013 13:36

I could not agree with you more OP. I have one friend on facebook who has a huge number of 'friends' whose capacity for vile and bigoted comments in response to her (normal) status updates knows no bounds. Their nasty opinions end up on my news feed and I feel compelled to reply.

MadameDefarge · 15/10/2013 13:38

If someone used the word spastic in rl in front of me or my son I would rip their throats out.

Not very PC of me, though.

DarkVelvetySilkyShiraz · 15/10/2013 13:39

I always find some peoples opinions on here challenging, we are the general public you know!

DarkVelvetySilkyShiraz · 15/10/2013 13:40

Madame

No one whom I am friends with would ever use that word, I have only heard it from people I would expect to hear it from if that makes sense.

Hopefully you will never hear it.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/10/2013 13:51

You are right.

That's why I'm off..have done it before but always reluctantly. .this time it will be a relief.

Love to the nice people Thanks

ToggyD · 15/10/2013 13:55

Quitter!

YouTheCat · 15/10/2013 13:55

Fanjo, don't go! I need backup! Grin

MadameDefarge · 15/10/2013 13:56

Indeed DarkV, I only hear it from ignorant, rude, intellectually challenged people. who think nothing of bringing up children to swear and abuse others as a joke.

Piss poor parenting, in my book.

MadameDefarge · 15/10/2013 13:56

Fanjo, please don't!

PresidentServalan · 15/10/2013 19:52

I have a lack of empathy in RL and the internet - I always struggle trying to imagine how people feel if I haven't been in that situation. Doesn't make my opinion goady or even less valid though. I always wonder whether you develop empathy more once you have children though - a few friends of mine who are mothers cry at a lot of things.

YouTheCat · 15/10/2013 19:53

I cry at virtually nothing and I've got 2. Grin

PresidentServalan · 15/10/2013 19:58

YouTheCat Grin

coldwinter · 15/10/2013 20:15

No. I have a childless friend who cries really easily at anyone else s misfortune. And goes out of her way to help others.

Rather naively I assumed that 'cos it was "Mumsnet" it'd be quite civilised. I've never seen the "C" word written so much in my life & I'm no blushing wallflower!!

Never met such a bunch of nasty bastards!! It's car crash forums at their best - like Jeremy Kyle online....Unfortunately I can't seem to stop coming to see what makes people tick.

Fascinating to read, some interesting & thoughtful stuff hidden in the dross, but the rest just makes me think "thank God I don't know you in RL".

In RL I'm not a particularly sympathetic or empathetic person & tend to come out with A or B solutions - this is probably magnified online TBH but hey - it's the Interweb, it ain't real life!!

MurderOfBanshees · 15/10/2013 20:49

It goes through phases on here, always has done. We're due a mood change on here now though surely?

nicename · 15/10/2013 22:08

I'm quite empathic (a therapist, so I ought to be) but am under so much stress and crap these days )consyant simmer) I blub at the drop of a hat.

I think the general madness around here has something to do with the change of seasons or the weather, or a full moon. Some people are just being argumentative and thoughtless for the hell of it. It's not just the 'big topics' either.

OP - we've just got a lovely fluffy kitten! The children can't decide on a name - what do you think: Tiddles or Fiddles?

Madposter - why did you get a fucking cat?

Crazyposter - I have fucking cats. Drown it now.

Normalposter - I love cats. Maybe 'Mr Fluffy'?

Madposter - you **! You should die and take all the cats with you. Have you drowned that fucking cat yet?
