...to think that evangelising before 10am on a Saturday morning is well out of order?

Disclaimer: we have no DCs (yet).

I went out for a morning run at 9.30 on Saturday, leaving DH in bed (exhausted and in need of another couple of hours' sleep due to an ongoing health issue). I was surprised to say the least to open the door to a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses who hadn't (thankfully) rung the extremely loud doorbell. I told them I didn't have time to talk, that the maisonette next door was unoccupied and that my DH was asleep so please to leave our doorway.

They did... but when I came back DH told me the doorbell rang repeatedly until he got up, to find these pushy f*ckers on the doorstep again. He, more politely than I, asked them to leave.

They come around our neighbourhood on a fairly regular basis... would IBU to tell them next time to piss off and stop evangelising when already asked not to? Wouldn't you be grumpy if someone disturbed your household when told not to? AIBU to think that pre 10am on a weekend should be reserved for emergency services only?!

Put a sign up saying no cold callers?

We used to get them a lot but now we have the sign!

Doesn't stop bloody betterware catalogues though.

BunnyLebowski · 14/10/2013 20:15

YANBU.

It's uninvited delusion-peddling.

Afaik you can ring your local JW institution and get your address removed from calling list.

You shouldn't have to do that though. Cheeky feckers.

Religious nutters behaving like cunts? Whoever would believe it.

Alisvolatpropiis · 14/10/2013 20:20

Yanbu but I think people who are actively encouraged to force their religion on others are a tad more thick skinned than average.

DramaAlpaca · 14/10/2013 20:21

YANBU. Evangelising at any time of day is out of order.

Sparklingbrook · 14/10/2013 20:26

Does anyone know why they have to actually speak to you? Why don't they push the whatever it is Watchtower thing through the door? Or is that not spreading the word correctly? Confused

DH says that when he was a child the JHs rang the doorbell just as everyone had sat down to Christmas dinner. Shock

Get one of these not had 1 knock on the door since I have.

Not sure if I actually could contact the police or trading standards but it's working so far.

DH works nights so something had to be done to protect his sleep

The cold callers round our way are getting cunning. They bring kids with them. I'm sure it's in the hope that with a pair of innocent little eyes staring up at you, you'll find it harder to tell them where they can stick their wretched pamphlets.

I still manage to get my point across though Grin

ancientbuchanan · 14/10/2013 20:37

Highly counter productive.

But one friend has the perfect response,

" oh good. I was brought up catholic. Let me tell you about it, it won't take long"

She is never ever visited.

lessonsintightropes · 14/10/2013 20:40

ancientbuchanan Grin I was brought up Muslim, wonder if that would work as well?

puntasticusername I grew up around the corner from some JWs who took their daughter (my friend) on their 'rounds', which I think looking back on it was almost abusive, given the amount of shit she got about it at school.

lessonsintightropes gosh yes, that must have been very hard Sad

SolidGoldBrass · 14/10/2013 20:43

I just yell 'FUCK OFF' and slam the door in their faces. I see no reason to treat them with any courtesy when they have disturbed me for no reason other than to try to peddle bullshit to me.

Yeah, I find that really, really hard. I mean, I'm not actually surprised to learn that religious nutcases are abusive parents who are happy to drag their child around in order to further their hobby, but it would be nice if they didn't.

ancientbuchanan · 14/10/2013 21:02

Lesson, I am sure it ought to ( though I have a feeling that the Pope is the arch Satan). x ( typical catholic name) looks keen and eager to convert them.....there's a sort of I can beat you at your own game that she gives off. You might need to practice first. It's v funny.

LuisSuarezTeeth · 14/10/2013 21:07

I open the door with a big cheesy smile. Let them start waffling, nod and hmm, then stop and look puzzled.

I say "wait a sec"
Turn round
Shout up the stairs
"LUCIFER! IT'S ABOUT THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTION!"

Utter joy.

notagiraffe · 14/10/2013 21:12

Try saying 'I'd love to join but there are already 40 million JWs world wide and only 144,000 places in heaven. I'd hate to deprive you of yours!'

Maiyakat · 14/10/2013 21:14

I once had a cold caller selling 'No cold callers' signs... Hmm

iloveny001 · 14/10/2013 22:38

I once lost my temper when they wouldn't stop ringing the doorbell, which I was trying to ignore, having just got into bed following a night shift. Grrr.
