To think people shouldn't smoke with kids in the car

I don't care if I get flamed for saying this because I think it's absolutely disgusting. I can't think of one single reason where it would be acceptable to do this.

Today I saw a man and a woman smoking in a car, with a baby in the back. The windows were down a few inches. It makes me so angry. That poor baby.

You probably will get flamed for it, a lot of people, on MN in particular, think smoking is the smoker's business. But FWIW I completely agree with you

I see it all the time. I just don't understand why people do it.

Because they're selfish. Nobody these days has the wonderful, blissful ignorance of the effects that passive smoking has on children as an excuse anymore. It comes down to the fact they don't care, pure and simple. They can say they feel guilty, or it was just the once, but the fact remains that they didn't/don't care.

I remember asking my parents to roll down the windows in the car whilst they chainsmoked and either getting told to shut up because it's their car and they'll do what they want, or if I had a chest infection they'd begrudgingly open their window an inch so the smoke was wafted around a bit.

It's something that annoys me too OP and I was a smoker for many years. I wouldn't smoke in a confined space with anyone else there unless they were smoking too.
My parents used to smoke in the car when I was little and I hated it.

YANBU. It is totally selfish and people who say it isn't are selfish AND stupid. Someone who wasn't selfish wouldn't smoke around children at all never mind in a small enclosed space.

It's illegal to smoke in a vehicle with anyone under 18 here. I still see it happening though. Gross.

I am smoker, I think its an utterly vile thing to do. The other thing I hate is when you see adults sat in the front wearing seatbelts, with children in the back unharnessed. Vile.

Yes it is selfish, you can control when you smoke. Stop the car and get out if you have to.

Children or not, I don't think it's especially safe smoking while driving anyway. It's a distraction. How can you be fully focused on the road while rummaging around for the packet, getting a cigarette out and then lighting it, then dealing with the ash and butt (even if you somehow think chucking it out the window doesn't count as littering)?
Children should absolutely not have to breathe in smoke. My parents smoked in the car and house when I was a child, and I was asthmatic as a result of it. I always stunk of smoke. I hated it.
I get that it's an addiction but being an addict doesn't have to mean you're thoughtless and inconsiderate of others.

I smoke and it makes me twitch a bit when I see it.

I saw the mum of a friend of DD's doing this recently and I judged. Then the next time I saw her I realised she's pg. Oh how I judged even more

Yes Felyne, some want to smoke in the car but wind the window down and hold the cigarette outside the car. Then chuck it in the road when they are finished.
