To raise it with the school as my dd 5 is dancing to 'blurred lines' by robin thicke in her after school dance club?

Hi there, I would welcome your views on the above. Just found out that they have been practicing a dance to the above song at my dd's after school dance club (5 to 7 year olds). I am very very uncomfortable with this. I know the children will not understand the underlying message of the song, but I still find it wrong on so many levels.

I will likely upset a few people as the dance teacher is a mum at the school, and she is otherwise, a great and popular teacher. I know I could withdraw my dd from the dance class but it just seems wrong that this song is even playing in a primary school at all.

So am I being unreasonable to raise it with the head?

I run a dance club in the school I work in. Whenever I think of a song I'd like to use or the kids suggest a song the FIRST thing I do is listen to the lyrics........... Or I google them if they are in any way unclear.

I've rejected loads of songs because I've been worried about the lyrics.

So, OP, you are soooo NBU.

I complained when this was used in my dc school, the ht was very apologetic and it hasn't happened again.

Wink

First post - Enjoy this parody

AnaisHellWitch · 12/10/2013 20:04

I prefer this one The beginning anyway.

Lilacroses · 12/10/2013 20:08

Crikey.....that is grim. Print out the lyrics and take them in when you complain.

cunexttuesonline · 12/10/2013 20:49

I love the song and genuinely didn't realise until now what it was about, I hadn't really listened to the lyrics before, I just like the tune... as does DS who is 4... Confused

Ericaequites · 12/10/2013 20:59

The lyrics are totally inappropriate for any school function. I would bring it up with the Head of School.

AnaisHellWitch · 12/10/2013 21:02

Welcome to Mumsnet btw, BakedAlaskaStomper Smile

[Intro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

[Verse 1: Robin Thicke]
If you can't hear what I'm trying to say
If you can't read from the same page
Maybe I'm going deaf,
Maybe I'm going blind
Maybe I'm out of my mind
[Pharell:] Everybody get up

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby, it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
[Pharell:] Everybody get up

[Verse 2: Robin Thicke]
What do they make dreams for
When you got them jeans on
What do we need steam for
You the hottest bitch in this place
I feel so lucky
Hey, hey, hey
You wanna hug me
Hey, hey, hey
What rhymes with hug me?
Hey, hey, hey

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you're an animal, baby it's in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don't need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker
Hey, hey, hey

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
[Pharell:] Everybody get up
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me

[Verse 3: T.I.]
One thing I ask of you
Let me be the one you back that ass to
Go, from Malibu, to Paris, boo
Yeah, I had a bitch, but she ain't bad as you
So hit me up when you passing through
I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two
Swag on, even when you dress casual
I mean it's almost unbearable
In a hundred years not dare, would I
Pull a Pharside let you pass me by
Nothing like your last guy, he too square for you
He don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that
So I just watch and wait for you to salute
But you didn't pick
Not many women can refuse this pimpin'
I'm a nice guy, but don't get it if you get with me

[Bridge: Robin Thicke]
Shake the vibe, get down, get up
Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don't like work?

[Pre-chorus: Robin Thicke]
Baby can you breathe? I got this from Jamaica
It always works for me, Dakota to Decatur, uh huh
No more pretending
Hey, hey, hey
Cause now you winning
Hey, hey, hey
Here's our beginning

[Chorus: Robin Thicke]
I always wanted a good girl
(Pharell: Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You're a good girl
Can't let it get past me
You're far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
(Pharell: Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you're a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me

[Outro: Pharrell]
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey

Someone thought this was child appropriate?

Are they cleared to work with children?

imofftolisdoonvarna · 12/10/2013 22:25

wanksock - seriously?! I am pretty crap at interpreting the meanings behind songs, but how could you not get blurred lines? The main repeated line is 'I know you want it'.

hiddenhome · 12/10/2013 22:31

What I find worrying is all these Head Teachers who are allowing obscene lyrics to be performed in school productions - as described by some posters above - either they're fucking thick or don't give a stuff about the kids they're teaching Hmm

I'm as square and boring as they come, but I know what's going on with music these days and I know who's churning out the obscenities.

Vivacia · 12/10/2013 22:38

either they're fucking thick or don't give a stuff about the kids they're teaching

Or, they aren't in every dance class for every second?

CeliaFate · 12/10/2013 22:43

I was 8 when Grease was released and sang "You know that ain't no shit, we'll be getting lots of tit in Greased Lightning...You know that I ain't bragging, she's a real pussy wagon Greased Lightning...You are a dream, the chicks will cream for Greased Lightning"

The Blurred Lines lyrics are horrendous, but I don't think questionable lyrics are a new phenomenon. In a couple of months it will be forgotten.

joanofarchitrave · 12/10/2013 22:44

Could the teacher use an instrumental version? I bet there's one around.

BakedAlaskaStomper · 12/10/2013 22:45

Thanks for the welcome Smile Grin
It is an odious song. Popular culture can be so dangerous, this nasty stuff sneaks in under the radar all the time. I would say definitely say it to the dance teacher; show her the lyrics, and also remark to her how easy it is to get hooked on a catchy tune, and not realise the meaning of the words

LEMisdisappointed · 12/10/2013 22:49

see, this is where i worry, i am clearly getting old and past it - never heard of the song so it would go over my head im sure! Reminds me of the time that DD1 was pretty insistant on staying at her GPs on a friday nights - i found out they were letting her watch south park (she was about 9 or 10) They thought it was ok because it was a cartoon - err, even didn't get it when i explained there was songs called "uncle fucker" on it Hmm

OhBabyLilyMunster · 12/10/2013 22:53

Yanbu - its a fucking rank song. In happier news, Thicke is being sued into next week by marvin gayes family as his 'song' is blatant plagiarism.

shrinkingnora · 12/10/2013 22:53

Grim song. Definitely complain.

shrinkingnora · 12/10/2013 22:54

That Marvin Gaye song is awesome.

Fishandjam · 12/10/2013 22:55

giveit, thanks for that link.

Mellowandfruitful · 12/10/2013 22:57

There'll be plenty of things of alternatives that would be better. Call Me Maybe is a little older as a track but similar in its appeal, for instance. Definitely mention it as I really don't think it should be used. For one thing, if any of them want to watch the video on YouTube, it will be awkward.

Mellowandfruitful · 12/10/2013 22:58

OBLM good to hear that the Gaye family are suing! It does seem like a rip-off.
