To think that shops souldnt change their sizing just to make fat people feel better

Was shopping in H&M and was looking through the basics range - needed leggings and t shirts etc. took some leggings to try on, an picked up a pair of medium without going it much thought, as I am a size 10-12. Luckily I did try them on because they were massive on me. When I went to look for a smaller size I noticed a sign saying they had 'revolutionised' their sizing for the basics range to allow for bigger sizing, which is fair enough.

But why mess around with all the rest of the sizes?! Why not just label it xxl rather than changing medium to fit a size that would have fit a 16-18.

And to make it all even more stupid, it was only their basics range that had changed, the rest of the stuff was still a normal size.

I ended up at the till with a stupid range of sizes, with some smalls, some mediums and one large for their stupidly small skinny jeans. An this is just one store.

IME they just assign random labels to clothes in the H&M factories.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/10/2013 21:01

Yanbu.

Vanity sizing isn't a positive thing.

One day I'll pluck up the courage to try on one of my Nans vintage 1960's size 8 dresses. One day.

Bazoo23 · 11/10/2013 21:02

thread title made me laugh :-)

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/10/2013 21:03

Though saying that. I bought two cardigans from h+m a couple of years back, the black and white versions of each other. Both a size small. The black one fit as you would imagine a small to fit. The white one was massive. Both factory labelled small.

ConfusedandDazed24 · 11/10/2013 21:03

YANBU. In the back of my mind I'd always know....

Nombrechanger · 11/10/2013 21:03

Thread title made me want to say "Did you mean to be so fucking rude?"

bababababoom · 11/10/2013 21:05

What a pointless post. Did you post this just to say, "the 10-12 were so ridiculously too big for me..." - sizes ivary from shop to shop anyway so you'd never know what was going to fit without trying it on, and H and Mi have always had smaller sizes than other shops - just get the size that fits!

What makes you think fat people need to be made to feel better? Some people are actually ok with buying a larger size. This smiacks iof looking diowni yiour nose at other people!

ChippingInNeedsSleepAndCoffee · 11/10/2013 21:05

Yes - blame the Fat People. Don't blame the media or anything... Hmm

sleeplessbunny · 11/10/2013 21:06

I hate this. H&M is one of the worst offenders IMO, I agree with arbitrary
I once bought 2 supposedly identical pairs of size 10 trousers, one black one brown. Stupidly I only tried the black pair, they fitted so I bought both. Got them home, the brown ones must have been at least a 14. But the label said 10.

pianodoodle · 11/10/2013 21:06

When I was a teenager I took size 12 and those were the smallest sizes usually.

Only a few places had size 10 and a size 8 was rare to see anywhere.

I haven't changed size but now I'm an 8 in tops or sometimes even a six... Confused

PedlarsSpanner · 11/10/2013 21:07

H and M sizing is BIZARRO, this from your own OP:

''I ended up at the till with a stupid range of sizes, with some smalls, some mediums and one large for their stupidly small skinny jeans. An this is just one store.''

Not keen on yer fattitude though, dude

ChestyCoffin · 11/10/2013 21:07

How rude Hmm

gosh this is gonna be a goodie.. pulls up chair

LittleMissWise · 11/10/2013 21:09

That's a really horrid thread title IMO.

H&M sizes are arse about face, I am usually an 8-10 but can sometimes not fit into their size 12s. It could have been that you picked up another pair of S-M leggings and they had fit you.

All shops vary their sizes, I think it's media pressure tbh.

CoffeeTea103 · 11/10/2013 21:09

Yanbu, took a size 8 in two colors, tried the black it was fine, tried the pink it was huge!

Nombrechanger · 11/10/2013 21:10

It's a very boring post...blah blah...went into a shop..blah blah...had to buy a couple of different sizes...the whole world stopped rotating..blah blah...damn those fat fucks and their insecurities, now they've massacred my shopping experience...blah blah...

.....and we're back in the room...

BeaverAbroad · 11/10/2013 21:10

H&M generally get the size labels and chuck them randomly at the clothes, tbh. DD1 (8) is, according to them, either aged 6-7, 10, 13 or 4-5 Hmm in other shops she fits 7/8. I'm 'fat' (I prefer the word fat actually, after all, I have too much fat, hence the word) and I agree it is normalising it in a way.

ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 11/10/2013 21:10

No I didn't post to say the size 10-12 was too big. I am a size 10-12. However, the medium, which up until some point in the last few weeks used to fit me, is suddenly far too big.

I'm not saying I've all of a sudden shrunk (I wish!) but that for some reason H&M have decided that fat people want a bit of a confidence boost. Would somebody who is a size 18 really call themselves a size medium?

OP posts:
cardibach · 11/10/2013 21:11

This is just an opportunity for people to say 'Oooo I'm so thin'. I have clothes in my current size from several retailers which are between 5 and 10 years old. They are all too big. Shouldn't they be too small if this vanity thing is happening?

Shlurpbop · 11/10/2013 21:12

Joining you Peas! Crisp? Choc?

SkinnybitchWannabe · 11/10/2013 21:13

Just to add something pointless and random....I used to be a size 30 and today I got a jumper in a size 20 and it was slightly baggy Grin
I'm chuffed to blooming bits so hoping its not down to 'vanity sizing' Confused

ivykaty44 · 11/10/2013 21:13

shops don't change clothing size for the customers benefit - they change it to make themselves more money

ExitPursuedByABear · 11/10/2013 21:13

Offs

PeazlyPops · 11/10/2013 21:13

Next and Dorothy Perkins are the same, I always have to buy a size down. It is vanity sizing.
