To think that shops souldnt change their sizing just to make fat people feel better

Was shopping in H&M and was looking through the basics range - needed leggings and t shirts etc. took some leggings to try on, an picked up a pair of medium without going it much thought, as I am a size 10-12. Luckily I did try them on because they were massive on me. When I went to look for a smaller size I noticed a sign saying they had 'revolutionised' their sizing for the basics range to allow for bigger sizing, which is fair enough.

But why mess around with all the rest of the sizes?! Why not just label it xxl rather than changing medium to fit a size that would have fit a 16-18.

And to make it all even more stupid, it was only their basics range that had changed, the rest of the stuff was still a normal size.

I ended up at the till with a stupid range of sizes, with some smalls, some mediums and one large for their stupidly small skinny jeans. An this is just one store.

Cardibach, in my experience, old clothes get stretched out. I have tops in size 6 from my youth that still fit me because they have stretched out from the amount of times I've worn them.

Cheap clothes, crap sizing.
What else is there to say
Oh apart from needlessly bitchy OP...

Writerwannabe83 · 11/10/2013 21:15

I understand that - I have had the same problem in shops. I used to class myself as a size 10 (weighing just under 9 stone) but then started to find the size 10s were hanging off me, it was ridiculous. I even had to buy a size 6 once!!

However, I have also found that trying to find clothes for my size can be quite difficult. Now that a size 14 is considered the norm these days (a real size 14) I find more clothes are being made to fit this size as there is more need for them and the smaller sizes seem to be dying out.

Drives me mad!! I feel like I need to put on weight just so I can get some decent clothes!!

cardibach · 11/10/2013 21:15

I wouldn't say size 18 was medium, no. I also wouldn't say size 10=12 was. SO if they have got too big, could it be that they are size 14-16 which is medium? Don't be so arsey and judgemental about people's size!

AngelsLieToKeepControl · 11/10/2013 21:16

I'd worry less about your clothes and more about your attitude if I were you OP.

ExitPursuedByABear · 11/10/2013 21:16

Offs. Again.

cardibach · 11/10/2013 21:17

Those, they aren't stretchy. THey are tailored trousers. THey have in no way 'stretched out'. You just want to believe they have... Now why is that?

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 11/10/2013 21:18

S-M-L is a bit of a minefield, it depends what shop you're in, in Top Shop that could be 8-10-12 and in Tesco it could be 10-16-22 or something.

Pixel · 11/10/2013 21:18

I've been losing weight and my clothes are now an odd range of sizes. I've got a pair of size 10 jeans that now need a belt to hold them up, and a pair of size 12 jeans from the same range in the same shop (just a different colour) that are still a bit tight.Confused

NoComet · 11/10/2013 21:19

Very smug title and H&M are the worst example on the high street.

MN verdict before has been their small sizes are large and their large sizes small and sometimes they are just nonsensical.

Having big hips and a large arse, I'm happy when people's 16's are a touch generous, because 18 coats and dresses drown my narrow shoulders and small norks.

timidviper · 11/10/2013 21:19

16 is apparently the size of the average woman in this country now though so, logically, you would expect a 10-12 to be a small wouldn't you? Why would you expect someone who takes the most common size in the country to be labelled extra extra large with all the connotations society puts on size?

Are you claiming that women in a size 10 wouldn't get a boost from being small rather than medium, I think most women I know would and I think your constant references to fat people makes you sound rude. As a "larger lady" I pay no attention to clothes size anyway and just buy what fits well and looks good, I certainly am not sad enough to need my confidence boosting by a label in clothes

Get over yourself

Dawndonnaagain · 11/10/2013 21:20

I"m more than a size 18 due to the steriods I have to take. I wouldn't call myself a medium. However, I wouldn't allow you to call me fat, either, I'd tell you to fuck off. Oh look, I did.
Hmm

NoComet · 11/10/2013 21:22

Also I think there is a cynical plot by clothing retailers to stop making any age 11-14 clothes and force parents to buy adult 6 and 8's at greatly more £££ than just the VAT.

MalcolmTuckersMistress · 11/10/2013 21:23

I think peoples's terrible and intense obsession with what size other people are is what the problem is, not vanity sizing.

Mumsnet seems to be rife for these vanity sizing rants. They say "Oh but fat people cost the NHS..blah blah blah." Well whatever. Fuck the fuck off and go watch your ridiculously boring reality shows and post pictures of your duck face and cleavage on Instagram and just buy clothes that FIT you!

Yabu.

InsultingBadger · 11/10/2013 21:26

What a horrible thread title. I see what you're getting at but the title is angry!

Nombrechanger · 11/10/2013 21:27

Well said mistress!

now when will you lend me Malcolm for a few hours

BrokenSunglasses · 11/10/2013 21:27

I agree that vanity sizing is bollocks, but also that H&M sizing is crazy.

I have two pairs of H&M trousers that both fit perfectly, but they aren't the same side on the labels.

Northernlurker · 11/10/2013 21:28

OP - I am a size 22. There's no label in the world that will make me think I'm thin because I'm not. Nor do I want to be. Try taking in a couple of points:

  1. 'Fat' people are not stupid.

  2. The size on the label is irrelevant. We are all different shapes and sizes. Buy what fits and suits you as long as you also like it.

lifehasafunnywayofhelpinguout · 11/10/2013 21:28

Your view is your view and I have no right to dictate to you what is reasonable and unreasonable but these would not refuse a fat persons custom would they.
We can't all be a perfect 10-12 like you, I'm afraid. I am what you'd call fat but it's never held me back in anyway. Why should I change or apologise for being who I am. If shops don't have my size it then it's their loss not mine as there are other shops I can go to. I mostly go to simply be the clothes there are gorgeous.
I'm signing off now as my D.P is on his way to mine (big smile) so he obviously likes me for who I am. If others do not then quite honestly they do not have to anything to do with me. x

MrsSchadenfreude · 11/10/2013 21:28

Fuck off with your scrawny size 10 arse, laughing "Oh tiny little me." There's a love.

MaryPoppinsBag · 11/10/2013 21:28

OP I know I am fat.

A reduced clothes size label in my clothes wouldn't make me feel any better.

Here's hoping you don't develop an under active thyroid and suffer from god awful depression like me. Mind you then you might understand what a fucking twat you sound.

Personally I'd rather be a nice person with a fat arse than a thin bitch.

lessonsintightropes · 11/10/2013 21:30

What MalcolmTuckers Mistress said. Ridiculous stealth boast FFS - just try on what you want to buy. Or take it back if it doesn't fit. Delivering such a unpleasant and frankly judgy comments isn't going to either make your point or make you friends. Hmm

bonkersLFDT20 · 11/10/2013 21:32

But what do genuinely really small people do?
I am slim and have been the same size all my adult life.
I am a comfortable size 10 according to most standard measurements, but now I easily find my wardrobe has lots of 8s. I NEVER would have worn an 8 20 years ago. Do smaller people have to get children's clothes?

Mimishimi · 11/10/2013 21:34

Hmmm. It's only a bit annoying if you don't want to try on first but then again, I sometimes get to swan around in a 6 - 8 or 4-6 if it's US sizing and feel like movie star! Grin. I think it has more to do with wanting to standardize sizing to US sizes globally than trying to make their customers feel better about their size.

Weeantwee · 11/10/2013 21:34

Your thread title is unreasonable. Those numbers on clothing labels mean nothing anymore.

I have a skirt pattern for a dressmaking class I'm doing and it's circa 1950s. According to the body measurements on the pattern, I come in at a size 18 with my 42in hips. I'm currently sat on the sofa in size 10 jeans. Who cares! Just pick up every size and buy what fits best.
