To think that shops souldnt change their sizing just to make fat people feel better

Was shopping in H&M and was looking through the basics range - needed leggings and t shirts etc. took some leggings to try on, an picked up a pair of medium without going it much thought, as I am a size 10-12. Luckily I did try them on because they were massive on me. When I went to look for a smaller size I noticed a sign saying they had 'revolutionised' their sizing for the basics range to allow for bigger sizing, which is fair enough.

But why mess around with all the rest of the sizes?! Why not just label it xxl rather than changing medium to fit a size that would have fit a 16-18.

And to make it all even more stupid, it was only their basics range that had changed, the rest of the stuff was still a normal size.

I ended up at the till with a stupid range of sizes, with some smalls, some mediums and one large for their stupidly small skinny jeans. An this is just one store.

It isn't about the size of the person though. Surely we can all at least expect to go into shops and be the same size? I most certainly do not think larger people are stupid or any of the other horrid generalisations.

Why aren't sizes standardised throughout shops?

I don't care what size I buy - I will buy what looks the best on me. But fuck I hate having to try everything on! Taking off all my clothes, trying on different ones, getting my hair caught in buttons (I'm a berk, this happens a lot). I just want to be able to pick something up in a size any size and know it will fit!

KirjavaTheCorpse · 11/10/2013 21:34

I've found the opposite. I've bought size 14 jeans from H&M and had to give them to my size 10 friend, whom they fitted perfectly.

H&M are just shit at sizing.

ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 11/10/2013 21:35

I never said 10-12 was perfect, I am by no means perfect looks at cellulite bum and c section tummy and I never ever said that being larger was in any way a bad thing. I just said that I wouldn't class it as a medium size.

There must be a reason why shops are doing it. Thy are obviously selling more units of a measurement if they label it medium or large rather than XL or XXL. Otherwise it's a pointless change

BuzzardBirdBloodBath · 11/10/2013 21:35

Get over yourself. Yes, the rest of the world is enormous and you are perfect.

MaryPoppinsBag · 11/10/2013 21:35

They go to a shop that does skinny sizes. Or buy kids clothes. My Mum used to when she was young (but adult IYSWIM).

JemimaMuddledUp · 11/10/2013 21:36

In defence of the OP, varying sizing is a complete pain in the arse especially if you shop online. I don't want to buy four different sizes and send three back, I want to know straight away that something fits.

It doesn't help either when the sizing charts bear little resemblance to the actual size of the clothes.

H&M is one of the worst.

Thants · 11/10/2013 21:36

The plus size range in h&m is labelled in XL, XXL and XXXL so they aren't euphemistic, so your premise is flawed.

Writerwannabe83 · 11/10/2013 21:37

It really annoys me when women sized 10-12 are labelled as skinny! In my eyes that is the healthy size and it should be encouraged, not be seen as a negative!

bamboobutton · 11/10/2013 21:37

clothes sizes are a load of shit in this country. the other day I was wearing a size 12 dress, a size 16 petticoat and size 22 leggings. see? im pretty sure im not weeble shaped so that tells me that clothes sizes are a load of old guff.

yabu and ftfo

MaryPoppinsBag · 11/10/2013 21:37

But the varying size is a pain for everyone not just slim people. OP was being a twat.

MurderOfBanshees · 11/10/2013 21:38

"Would somebody who is a size 18 really call themselves a size medium?"

Hang on, you picked up a 10-12 which was labelled a medium, and somehow you've leapt from that to assuming that's equivalent to a size 18? Rather than it being more likely they've tweaked it at max to a size 12-14?

What do genuinely small sized people do?

Well I shop in children's sections, or buy clothes from stores that stick to the standard sizes, or buy clothes in countries where people are smaller...! I'm now apparently a size 4-6. Yay me. Tops gape so my non existent boobs show even in lovely bras, trousers need belts even though they don't have belt loops.

ThoseArentSpiritFingers · 11/10/2013 21:41

Wonderwoman, that's quite a big leap from what I was actually saying...

OP posts:
KirjavaTheCorpse · 11/10/2013 21:42

Are you just offended that you're seemingly being lumped in with fat people, because now they can wear a 'medium' too?

Why does it even bother you anyway. You got the right size to fit you in the end, not sure why it's an issue.

MaryPoppinsBag · 11/10/2013 21:43

What were you trying to say OP?

Madeyemoodysmum · 11/10/2013 21:43

I agree that vanity sizing does no one any favours, it's normalising an unheathly state. My wedding dress was a size 18 as the measurements are proper dress sizes from 40 years ago. However in most modern shops I'm a 10/12 hips.

Ten years ago a top in new look would have been tight in a 14. I prob would have had to buy a 16 due to my big boobs.

Now I can get a 10!
My bra size is the same as ten years ago, how does that work?

Nombrechanger · 11/10/2013 21:43

Can you see how your title looks really bitchy though, OP?

JemimaMuddledUp · 11/10/2013 21:47

But vanity sizing is, in general, there to make people think they are thinner than they are. Whether they be fat, thin or somewhere in between. So a size 18 person is pleased when they fit into a size 16, a size 10 person is pleased when they fit into a size 8. And in theory they continue to shop in that shop as it makes them feel good.

NK5BM3 made a very good point.

Plus, with no offence meant to the OP, size 10-12 isn't that skinny anyway. It is probably mid range of normal BMI. So a healthy weight. Which you would expect to be a size "Medium".

EricNorthmansFangbanger · 11/10/2013 21:50

Oh look at me, look at me, I'm a size 10 and I even fit into an old size 6!

Do fuck off.

I dislike the attitude people have of being so venomous of fat people. It's disgusting really. Like they can just take the absolute piss out of people because they're a different size to them. And somehow that's OK.

So one piece of clothing was bigger than you usually take, so what. Buy what fits your shape and to hell with the number on the label. Two people who weigh the same may be completely different sizes.

Clothing sizes are notoriously white in the UK. Don't blame fat people. And get over yourself.

JumpingJackSprat · 11/10/2013 21:50

why are people taking this post personally?! you do know the op didnt say anything derogatory about fat people. op i agree with the point youre trying to make.

MaryPoppinsBag · 11/10/2013 21:52

Because the title was rude.

PhallicGiraffe · 11/10/2013 21:53

All the fatties are going to be offended by your thread title Grin (just kidding)

ArbitraryUsername · 11/10/2013 21:57

All this 'a proper dress size from X years ago' stuff is quite annoying. Women's body shapes have changed since the 1950s/60s/whatever point you think is the site of 'proper sizing'. Not just because we're all fat now Hmm but because better nutrition means that we are taller and broader than previous generations were.

No matter how little fat I have on my body, my pelvis will still be a certain width because the bones are that wide. I don't have a big build (bone structure wise) but it's bigger than a small build seems to have been in the past.

Yes, lots of people may be 'overweight' but sizing does need to change to reflect the ways that women's bodies have changed.

RandallPinkFloyd · 11/10/2013 21:57

I know it's hard to resist such an open opportunity to stealth boast but do we really need a thread full of people droning on about how all clothes are too big for them?

And all the faux modesty with the 'I don't consider myself skinny' is even worse.

It must be terrible for you all, do you find your boobs are just too pert too?
