I was out today and bumped into someone I went to school with. We did all the 'what you up to?' and all that.
Anyway she said that I must be looking forward to having a kid that I can share "our black culture with"
I just nodded and we said bye and that was it

But seriously what the hell in 'Black Culture' because I have no idea and obviously according to her I should know what it is.

Obviously that one skipped me by

The way it's suggested in the OP is that there is a generic 'black culture' and I don't believe that exists, that's way too narrow a view of the world.

Everybody's culture is specific to them, whether your background is from Jamaica, Nigeria or Britain. And for mixed race children, that is even more specific to each child because we're all so mixed these days. So I don't believe in a general black culture (no more than I believe in a white culture) but perhaps talking about a black identity is more appropriate.

sashh I haven't read the whole of the thread. However, your post has stood out to me.
Your point on a perm is incorrect, a black person going to a hair dresser could come out with looser curls or straight hair.

Church clothes - stereotypical and not actually true to any of the black people in my family. It is true of the African/south African(not country) people I know.

Could she have meant that, as you grew up with white parents in a majority white country, it would be bonding to share those experiences, hopefully not negative ones bit sadly i suppose likely to be, and how you coped with them, with your biological dc, who might experience similar, where your parents would not have? Sorry I haven't explained that well!

Slightly off topic but my blind DS SW insisted his child minder had toys of Black disabled people in wheelchairs so he would not feel left out amongst the White children. Confused

womma · 12/10/2013 21:04

Oh lord, that's going to make all the difference isn't it?! I bet you were speechless at that one.

SoleSource · 12/10/2013 21:07

Yup and I swear to God it is true. Very odd,, they were about £25 each! Child minder didn't buy them but the SW insisted and nagged her about it for months, then SW left. Unbelievable it was and laughable.

MistressDeeCee I certainly didnt mean to start something like that
maybe talkingnonsense

I'll guess that I just be okay about not knowing what she was talking about. Not like I'm going to see her again
