To want some genuine proof that Bakers Complete dog foods are the work of the devil?

We've recently admitted defeat and acknowledged that we have an extremely picky dog who has, for the year we've had him, lost about a kilo since we rescued him.

He'll eat wet food without issue, but that's the expensive option and not good for his teeth. He also digests it far too quickly and ends up over eating if we keep him on that exclusively.

Most dry complete dog foods he won't touch unless he's really extremely hungry...he doesn't like anything that's too dry.

We tried him on quite a few different dry foods on the vet's advice, but a year later he's no better.

We've tried adding mixers and doggy gravies...he licks the bits he likes and leaves the rest.

We were in a tight spot as far as dog food is concerned recently and ended up having no choice but buying a Bakers Meaty Chunks complete food.

He loves it. He's eating better and is much brighter. Lovely coat.

But I've heard so many bad things about Bakers, I'm nervous to keep him on it. I can't find any actual evidence behind the word of mouth though

My westies have always had Bakers. They're quite well and happy. Saying that, my westie would eat stones if I put them in her bowl.

Tbh for the time being i'd just give him bakers and ever so slowly wean him onto something better ( have you tried fish4dogs? Lovely smells for dogs and good stuff)

Wet food will be 100x better for him than Bakers which contains added sugars (and zero real meat content, and added colourants which cause hyperactivity, and additives which are known carcinogens...) Applaws tins, Prize Choice mince blocks or Nature Diet trays are all excellent.

It's full of E numbers, including ones banned from human consumption, masses of flavourings (with is why dogs go mad for it), very little actually nutritious about it

A good dog food wet or dry should have meat (a named type not just meat derivatives) as the main percentage. Bakers doesn't as many cheap brands don't.

If you have a fussy dog and have the space have you thought about raw? Meat and bone goodness

Alternatively you could look at bulk buying good quality food from wholesalers if you have the space to store it. We buy Nature diet wet food and James Wellbeloved dry in bulk a lot cheaper than getting small amounts from Pets at home

My westies also eat their own poo, so you can't really trust their tastes.

We had the same problem, Little dog just wont eat dry food.

We have her on Forth Glade, plus a bonio and a handful of dog biscuits by hand.

Its the McDonald's of the dog food world. Have you tried raw meats/fish added to a dry food?

The large pedigree family dog ate bakers for most of his 16 years. Better than starving i'd say.

Have you tried putting stock over a good dry food? That's what we do with left-over stock, and the dog loves it. Cheapish too.

You could use rice to bulk out the wet food.

You couldn't sit downwind of our dogs when they were on Bakers. They stank. It made them very thirsty too.

I have the world's pickiest dog, so he lives on Bakers small dog meaty meals. He is 12 and still going strong, so I ain't changing now.

My dog is 18....yes18! She's always eaten Bakers and currently has Bakers Senior.

Yeah it's full of E numbers. Many dogs don't do well on it. But.... he loves it. His weight is better. He's happier. His coat looks good. I'd leave him on it if I were you. My name has had MRCVS stuck on the end of it for the past 10 years btw. I can't say that we see hordes of cancer-ridden Baker's-fed dogs through the door. I am unaware of any studies showing that dogs fed this are any more likely to get cancer than those fed sixty quid a bag additive free stuff.

Sorry I wouldn't touch Bakers, nor would any of my friends for their dogs. My two would eat absolutely anything but I wouldn't let them eat Bakers. They have Nature Diet and either Arden Grange or James Wellbeloved.

Despite all the current evidence to the contrary, my mum's old dog ate Bakers happily for 17 years. Would never touch other foods, was never overweight or sick. If it suits your dog, then use it.

I keep worrying about feeding current pup Beta (breeder had her on it). But it suits her, she's thriving, and it's the only brand except Wagg that my Mum's dog can eat without throwing up, so beneficial for when dog sitting. Trouble is, there is so much differing advice, perhaps gut instinct isn't a bad thing?

I have had many dogs come into rescue with supposed behavioural problems... owner says they are fed on bakers. Take them off of the bakers and a few days later the dogs are a lot calmer.

Bakers is awful.

Bakers is made of artificial colourants, nasty additives and meat and vegetable "derivatives", which can meen absolutely anything at all (even floor sweepings).

Only a very small percentage of it is actual meat (maybe 4 or 5%), which makes you wonder what on earth the rest can be.

I wouldn't feed it. It is the artificial taste enhancers which attract dogs to it.

Many of these nasties are also carcinogenic over a prolonged period, so no. I would never feed Bakers (or Pedigree). Not only that, they can cause or exacerbate behaviour problems in dogs in much the same way that artificial stuff can in human children.

Look for a dog food with meat or meat meal (meat with ground up bone) as the top ingredient, and no artificial additives. I currently use Arden Grange, but there are others.

If he's eating and happy, why not give yourself a break and let him eat it.
Best that we save our middle class angst for Turkey twizzlers.

In fairness pretty much everything gives RandallDog the raging shits. She has ishoos.

The only thing apart from plain chicken & rice that doesn't give her the galloping arse gravy is the 'value' dry food ie Smart Price, T Value, M Savers etc.

She's happy and healthy on that so my vet and I agree that if it ain't broke don't fix it!
