AIBU to ask you all for dress ideas for my xmas party

I am desperately looking for a dress for our xmas party.

It is at a posh venue with a meal and a lot of entertainment afterwards.

I work for a large establishment and in uniform, and all hours of the day/night therefore I feel I need to scrub up extra well to prove I don't look like a sleep deprived zombie all the time!

I want to get my hair done properly. I have very long hair, so could wear it down or in an elaborate up do.

I want a proper evening/party dress, nothing too casual. Everything I seem to like is something I'd wear in the day time also.

I am a size 12 with big ish boobs (DD). I am confident with my figure, more or less. I am tempted to go for something figure hugging, but don't want to look like one of the Friday night Oceana regulars, with everything on display!

I struggle to try different things, I always go for the same old styles therefore I thought a panel of strangers may be able to give me some fresh ideas...

do you like sleeves? straps? strapless?

floaty or figure hugging?

imo you need unusual or bold colour or sparkles :P I love Christmas parties! this year I will be a size bigger and 2 weeks post partum so I am missing it Sad

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 08/10/2013 14:36

Where have you looked?

I get my nicer dresses from Coast, French Connection and Oasis or Monsoon. I love a bit of sparkle at Christmas, I'm a bit like a magpie.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 08/10/2013 14:37

In that picture, that lady seems to have a large vagina on the front of her dress. Do you think she knows?

FriendlyLadybird · 08/10/2013 14:38

Do you have any time? Because the last time I needed a party dress, when, incidentally, I was feeling particularly fat and frumpy, I got some help from a shopping adviser. I was actually on the point of slinking out of the shop when she spotted me -- and she was great. She made me try on loads of dresses, even those that I wouldn't have dared to imagine myself in, and ended up with a long, red, figure-hugging number that (I have to say) made my DH almost explode with pride when we walked in together. Lots of the big stores have shopping advisers/stylists if you can get to one. There's no obligation to buy but it is a LOAD of fun.

CoffeeTea103 · 08/10/2013 14:39

That dress isn't nice, looks like a vagina on the front lol

CocacolaMum · 08/10/2013 14:40

Debenhams do a free personal shopper service.. seriously, try it. No vaginas probably though

skyofdiamonds · 08/10/2013 14:40

open to both floaty or figure hugging.

not a fan of sleeves usually but open to ideas.

I don't want to tell you too much or I'll end with my default dress type that I wear day and night! haha!

I've never worn sparkle but I feel like I should this year. Not tried any of them. I tried standard high street shops; topshop, zara, new look and RI. A couple on New Look website, but I find everyone has dresses from there.

You won't go wrong with a little black dress, and you can add a shimmery shawl with this. Hair up or down would go with this

FauxFox · 08/10/2013 14:46

one shoulder sequin detail
red marylin monroe
biba maxi
lace
slinky
Anything there grab you?

misguided is a great site - just been looking on it and actually thinking about this for my xmas party in December.

and this one

But there's loads on there and pretty reasonably priced too!
Have fun and glam up - bet you can't wait to show them all the gorgeous you without uniform etc...

skyofdiamonds · 08/10/2013 14:52

love that red one!
I wonder what it would look like on and what accessories and shoes? May have to pop in to the store and see if they have it later.

Red is a good colour for me apparently , I have dark brown hair.

I also like a LBD, just don't want to look boring. I have a few LBD's in my wardrobe, but I don't think they are formal enough (a bit clubby).

Nice but as you say – a bit boring – you can do better than that – it won’t stand out at all

Nope not boring – quite daring really!

Nice but a bit boring

my favourite one so far, thanks to fauxfox! www.houseoffraser.co.uk/Coast+Goddess+short+dress/190483370,default,pd.html

Yep I love that and if you have the budget to cover it then will be great.
You could order them all and send back what you don’t like!
