AIBU to judge a person's abilities purely based on how they look?

(And given that their appearance would not affect their ability to do a job)Because I think I would massively be unreasonable. Or is this somehow acceptable in nowadays? This is hypothetical btw, just musing.

so long as you don't mind everybody doing it back to you ....

I think we should all be aware of our prejudices and work to make sure they don't affect our interactions.

Beastofburden · 07/10/2013 16:10

eh?

Don't you know?

Can you think of any situation where it would be just fine?

Faithless12 · 07/10/2013 16:12

Only if they are a model.

People are always judged by how they look :(, it aint fair, it ain't right, but that is the way it is.

Bowlersarm · 07/10/2013 16:15

You would not be unreasonable for about ten seconds, before you got to know their personality.

After that hopefully your prejudices would subside.

MaidOfStars · 07/10/2013 16:33

Do I want a lawyer to look scruffy? Or have a facial tattoo? Or pink hair?

Sorry, but no. I don't in any way think it makes them less clever or less knowledgeable, but I would doubt their capacity to execute (mostly because I suspect other people are judging them, and thus it's a futile circle).

Of course its not right but it is fact that it happens all the time, human nature's not going to change because its not fair. We know people make lasting judgements of others based on the first few seconds of meeting them. Many don't admit/know it but it's true.

Why else would it be important to polish your shoes before a job interview?!
