to tell my DP to see a GP tomorrow

Yesterday, DP was out working in the garden and felt something sharp irritating his finger. He couldn't see anything but was able to get his ring off with some difficulty. It's been driving him crazy since, and now his finger and the back of his hand have swollen up and gone red. What was a small red lump a little like a nettle rash yesterday is now a large (ish) blister. He has pain going all the way up his arm and the pain, itching and irritation in his finger and his hand is almost unbearable. I've made him put a bag of frozen veg on it just to stop him rubbing it.

He went to get the pharmacist's advice earlier today, but because he's diabetic he can't take much so just has 10mg one-a-day loratadine tablets. He was advised to see a GP if it hadn't improved by Tuesday. He's not a wuss so if he says it's bothering him then it's normally enough to floor an ox. I've also kind of freaked us both out by googling UK spider bites and seeing very similar pictures to DP's blister.

AIBU to insist he tries to see a GP tomorrow or should we wait til Tuesday or beyond?

See a GP tomorrow. You have nothing to lose by getting it seen to earlier. Hope your DP is ok!

TobyLerone · 06/10/2013 18:41

It could well be a spider bite. He really ought to get it checked out just to be on the safe side. That doesn't sound like a normal reaction to something.

ControlGeek · 06/10/2013 18:41

PS I've put up pictures of the 'bite' on my profile.

I'd get it checked at the hospital if it's getting worse.

ControlGeek · 06/10/2013 18:41

Wow, I love AIBU! Thanks for the super quick responses :)

I'd probably get that seen to this evening.

MoveYourArmsLikeHenry · 06/10/2013 18:44

Yes, if it gets worse go to a and e. It looks so painful your por DP

FortyDoorsToNowhere · 06/10/2013 18:44

He should go, it could be an infection that need antibiotics or an allergic reaction that may need antihistamines

TobyLerone · 06/10/2013 18:44

That looks nasty. The biro is a good idea.

ControlGeek · 06/10/2013 18:46

Thanks everyone, DP asked if he thought it was A&E worthy (nowhere else is open near us) but I said I didn't think it was.

toby 'twas mn that taught me to draw around rashes and swellings :)

Those photos look awful. This isn't just a normal bite/sting. I would get him checked tomorrow morning but agree with Madlizzy, head to the hospital if it gets worse.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 06/10/2013 18:47

A&E now. That looks like an infection, and it could spread to his bloodstream. I was made to go instantly when my hand started to swell, and his is a lot worse than mine was. Ow.

Mabelface · 06/10/2013 18:51

Having seen the pictures and the fact that it's spreading, he needs to go to A&E now before he gets really poorly.

fusspot66 · 06/10/2013 18:53

A & E tonight. As a diabetic this could make.him really ill. And pack an overnight bag. Seriously.

OohDoctorDarcy · 06/10/2013 18:54

A&E or at least OOH. Especially if the AHs aren't working.

hugsandbutterflies · 06/10/2013 18:57

That looks serious and I would be going to A&E right now just to be on the safe side.

DragonMamma · 06/10/2013 19:00

Another one who would head straight to A&E. That is not a normal reaction to have to a scratch. He needs to get it seen to ASAP.

Good luck.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 06/10/2013 19:00

I would get that checked NOW. It could be an infection that could spread and leave him septic. Or a reaction. It needs treating

gamerchick · 06/10/2013 19:01

He needs anti hystemine really soon. If you haven't got any then you really shove him to hospital.

Yes, definitely get it seen now. Also, check if tetanus jabs up to date.

SayCoolNowSayWhip · 06/10/2013 19:04

Definitely A&E. My DM had something g similar and it turned out to be cellulitis. She was in hospital for a week. Not trying to scaremonger, but I wouldn't wait.

Cupcake1985 · 06/10/2013 19:05

Why are you even questioning it? Go and get it checked now.

NationMcKinley · 06/10/2013 19:06

Absolutely A&E: looks like cellulitis in which case he'll definitely need antibiotics - possibly intravenously. The fact that he's diabetic can complicate things so he should definitely be seen ASAP. Please let us know how he gets on!

ControlGeek · 06/10/2013 19:06

Thank you again - I've just called our nearest walk-in centre after seeing they were open til 8pm, but they are fully booked. They have advised us to call 111 to get an appointment at the hospital. DP is just about to call them now.
