To stand up and give Sinead O'Connor a round of applause

Not something that would normally happen at Maison Fifi but in this case I think it is richly deserved for her open letter to Miley Cyrus. I know Sinead is no stranger to courting publicity but with this one I think she is bang on the money www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-24382051

Actually, I'd like to print some of the comments about being worth more than your body or sex appeal out and hand them out to some of the secondary school girls going past my gate on a morning.

I think Sinead o'connors intention was a good one but she victim blames and basically directs her ire at the wrong person. She should have directed it at the horrible man who made the video. I can't support Sinead's letter at all and am surprised by how many friends I have who seem to think it's cool.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 03/10/2013 21:40

Sorry I missed out 'you're right' before I said Cyrus knows feck all. I didn't read your post as defending Cyrus, but I can see I missed out the words that would actually say thatGrin

KatyTheCleaningLady · 03/10/2013 21:41

I think the letter was a good response to Miley.

But I dislike the woman. I was offended by her publicity stunt "ordination" and I don't think I can ever take her seriously.

Zoe567 · 03/10/2013 21:42

"victim blaming" is bollox. Sinead is reminding her that she doesn't have to be a puppet, reminding her to think (as Alan Carr would put it) who gets more out of her pimping herself. And sinead is right, because she never built her image on her looks or her sexuality she still has a strong fan base and a lot of people who do respect her.

Is it "victim blaming" to ask a younger woman to think things through ? is it 'victim blaming' to give somebody your insight?

TheFabulousIdiot · 03/10/2013 21:43

And Miley's response just shows ow young and stupid she is, it is something she will hopefully feel embarrassed and regretful about when she has grown up a bit.

Yes... Do google Terry Anderson, he is a foul man with form for putting women into abusive situations. I really have no doubt that miley was encouraged to take a certain path with the wrecking ball video.

Sinead should have directed her lame and criticsm at the people who perpetuate this exploitation not at the people wo are too young to realise they are being exploited.

squoosh · 03/10/2013 21:44

I'm also at a loss to see where she victim blames.

BiscuitMillionaire · 03/10/2013 21:47

100% agree with you OP. 'prostituting yourself' - yes, exactly. It's so depressing. I feel like we've gone back to the 70s and Pan's People.

Mumraathenoisylion · 03/10/2013 21:47

Forward a copy to shakira???? Really? What did shakira ever do to you?

TheFabulousIdiot · 03/10/2013 21:47

Terry Richardson I mean.

zippey · 03/10/2013 21:52

Why all the hate for SC?

She's had a lot of problems in her life but she speaks from experience. I love her letter.

She does a great haunting version of House of the Rising Sun!

Zoe567 · 03/10/2013 21:56

Shakira has not "done anything to me" as you put it. She started off in a flowery dress, strumming her guitar on a bar stool, and singing songs she'd written herself, and she graduated from that to writhing around in a cage, leather-clad, with whips and chains. DId you miss that transformation mumraathenoisylion ??

She's another one who could ask herself why she underwent such a radical change of image.

TheFabulousIdiot · 03/10/2013 21:58

Richardson has been accused multiple times of sexual exploitation of young models. In March 2010 Richardson was accused by Danish model and filmmaker Rie Rasmussen, who was upset at Richardson's use of her picture in his Terryworld book alongside shots of half-naked young girls depicted as performing sex acts. Rasmussen commented, "He takes girls who are young, manipulates them to take their clothes off and takes pictures of them they will be ashamed of. They are too afraid to say no because their agency booked them on the job and are too young to stand up for themselves." Model Jamie Peck related, "Of all the fine folks I've frolicked au natural for, he's the only one who's left me feeling like I needed to take two showers."
Following the publication of these allegations, the website Jezebel.com called on other models to come forward with their experiences with Richardson. Jenna Sauers, a model-turned-blogger for the site, stated she received numerous anonymous accounts of the photographer's behavior: "I have heard from a lot of models that he has worked with that all say his M.O. is the same. You suddenly get naked and then he touches you and he goes further and further. But you're surrounded by his assistants and they are validating his actions."

MollyBear · 03/10/2013 21:59

God, now I know I'm getting old.

wtf does sitting astride a wrecking ball naked, and writhing around like you're in a porno film have to do with any of the lyrics to that song?

unbelievable.

Zoe567 · 03/10/2013 22:00

@ squoosh, yeah, where's the victim blaming in sending somebody the message that IT (whatever it is) doesn't have to be like this, YOU have the power to change things, the right to say no, the intelligence to question other people's agendas............ That'[s more like reminding younger women that they do actually have power.

ReviewsOffers · 03/10/2013 22:01

I don't see the victim blaming either

In fact it's the opposite of patronising, of victim blaming. it's saying You can take control.

ZippityDoodahday · 03/10/2013 22:02

And what about the likes of Rihanna? Miley can or should not be singled out.

Zoe567 · 03/10/2013 22:03

Yeh, send a copy to rhianna too.

TheFabulousIdiot · 03/10/2013 22:03

The BBC story doesn't contain the full text of what she wrote. Maybe that is why you don't think it contains any victim blaming?

eggyhead · 03/10/2013 22:06

Given the choice, I would dig a big hole and stick the pair of them in it. The world would be a better place without them.

cocoleBOO · 03/10/2013 22:06

There are new pictures of Miley taken by Terry Richardson on Buzzfeed at the moment, they are bloody awful.

Zoe567 · 03/10/2013 22:07

The full copy of sinead's letter has been all over the internet.
Maybe people don't think it is victim-blaming because it's not.

MirandaGoshawk · 03/10/2013 22:10

It's a brilliant letter. Miley comes across as a silly girl who is, indeed, being manipulated. The letter tells her not to stand for it, she's better than that. Can't see the problem with that!

squoosh · 03/10/2013 22:12

Being an industry puppet isn't the same as being a victim. Cyrus can make a choice to carve her own path, victims don't have the luxury of choice.

Zoe567 · 03/10/2013 22:13

Hopefully she will still have a bit of a think, later. I think it's human nature to lash out defensively as a first knee-jerk reaction.

Mumraathenoisylion · 03/10/2013 22:13

Well the most recent pictures I've seen of shakira are her with her little baby, she's always seemed like she knows exactly what she's doing to me. I may be wrong.....
