To be desperately hoping I haven't just given everyone food poisoning

Iceland cook from frozen chicken breasts. Cooked for required 30 minutes, checked and two were still raw as had been stacked by mistake. Added curry sauce, cooked for another 30 minutes. Looked a bit slimy when I cut it up so returned to oven of another ten minutes. Started eating it, ate quite a lot but gave up as still felt slimy.

Just checked and says its got added water, salt and corn oil. Please tell me that accounts for the odd texture and that I'm not about to spend the next three days on vom watch.

What temperature did you have them in at? Sounds like lots of cooking time for chicken breasts, if the oven was hot enough.

SPsTwerkingNineToFive · 02/10/2013 19:05

Cant help you but go sit in bathroom just in case

wonderingsoul · 02/10/2013 19:06

only time will tell... but tbh long as it wasnt pink you should be fine.

MrsWildermac · 02/10/2013 19:09

Don't worry ti wait three days...you'll know in a few hours if it was food poisoning! I always find that frozen chicken tastes more slimy than fresh...

ananikifo · 02/10/2013 19:12

No point worrying about it now. Chances are that everyone will be fine and it's pointless to sit around overanalysing every minor stomach problem.

If they were white in the middle they were probably fine. "Slimy" but otherwise cooked sounds like a problem with the recipe or the quality of the meat, not being undercooked.

Tilly333 · 02/10/2013 19:15

I agree with Amy - temperature is most important - but you should be fine. 1hour ten minutes should have over cooked them. Added water makes them weigh heavier and will make them shrink when cooked.

Sybilvimes · 02/10/2013 19:17

I've just fed the whole family sausages and didn't notice until I put the wrapper in the bin that they ran out of date on Sunday (which is also when I bought them)

Food poisoning comes on really quickly right? I mean if we're still okay after 4/5 hours we should be fine?

Fingers crossed for both of us!

CoffeeTea103 · 02/10/2013 19:19

Slimy sounds as though the quality of the meat wasn't too good, might have been bad but disguised if it had a breaded coating. With all that cooking time it should have been fully cooked.
If it tasted ok, then you probably shouldn't worry too much.

LargeLatte · 02/10/2013 19:28

The meat was volcanically hot just a weird texture. Colour wasn't as white as I'd expect but it was cooked in a dark sauce. Nothing I can do now. But won't bother buying them again. Oven has been a bit temperamental but food was definitely very hot.

The chicken was already cooked & would have been flash frozen at the factory, so it's 'clean' when you buy it.
If you kept it frozen & put it straight in a hot oven, and they were hot all the way through when you ate it, there is nothing that I would worry about from a food safety point of view Smile

They sound pretty gross though, the sliminess would make me feel a bit boaky. I don't think I'll try them.

CrohnicallyLurking · 02/10/2013 20:51

If it's food poisoning, it'll hit in the middle of the night. If you wake up tomorrow vom free then you'll be fine., no need to worry for days. I speak from experience (DH's, not mine, I have a cast iron stomach)

LargeLatte · 02/10/2013 20:55

These are frozen raw, so as they are cooking you can see them go through the pink and raw stage.

They were gross. I've used them lots of times before and they've been fine, but think the corn oil and salt is new as when I've checked the label before I'm sure it said only water.

Bleurghh. Really annoyed as spent ages cooking that dinner.

You wont know in few hours, usually 16-36. Iv had salmonella poisoning twice so really hope you dont get it, wouldnt wish it on anyone!!

PTFO · 02/10/2013 21:00

why on earth would you buy these in the first place?! local butcher and freeze. FAR better quality and taste, I dread to think what they had pumped into them eurgh.

fingers crossed for you, only time will tell.

starfishmummy · 02/10/2013 21:01

DH cooked a chicken stir fry - the pieces of meat were small enough to eat whole. Thought they had an odd texture so cut into one which was still half raw. . But I didn't suffer any nasty effects spotted hole younwill be ok too OP

starfishmummy · 02/10/2013 21:03

OMG.

"so hope you will be ok too"

LargeLatte · 02/10/2013 21:19

Thanks for your reassurance.

Really hoping it was just the poor quality of the meat. Yuk.

Kali- really? We were on holiday, and DH was extremely unwell in the middle of the night, he said 'I knew that burger looked a bit pink earlier!' It was around 9 hours after he'd eaten it.

Got it first time from a chicken pie in asda and then a kfc. Put me off these places for life!!

Turniptwirl · 04/10/2013 19:51

Some food poisoning shows within hours, some (eg salmonella and campylobacter) can take days

Hope you're all ok op it does sound like just bad quality meat

eurochick · 04/10/2013 20:01

I've had food poisoning from undercooked chicken (I noticed but by that point I had already swallowed a bite). You'll know pretty soon. I ate it early afternoon. I woke up around midnight vomming and the rest. We then had to get up at 4am to do a 5hr coach trip to Valley of the Kings (yes, it was Egypt). All I can say is, immodium is extremely effective. Although the "dead" smell of the tombs was somewhat unhelpful...

kali110 · 04/10/2013 22:51

I wouldnt go anywhere with salmonella poisoning. I couldnt be away from toilet for three days.
It can be terrible for some people. I had to go doc because i just could not keep anything down including water.
The worst thing ever.
