to think chorit-zo, pit-za, cras-ong and various other pronunciations are just a bit old school?

My DM uses all of the above (seriously, pit-za used to be acceptable for pizza some years past) including broccol-I, Keen-yah, rest-au-rong, choc-lit, turq-oissse, etc etc etc.

My DNep and D Niece take the piss out of her tonnes and to be fair it sounds very funny to their London ears. I just think for an old woman who grew up saying things a certain way it would be a bit mean to try and r-educate her.

What do you think? Do we need to try and get DM to say brocco-lee, Ken-yah, rest-oh-ron, choco-lat etc or should we just let it live, and giggle to ourselves? PS totally outing myself to any family members here :)

My FIL loves a Mer Lotte.

Always makes me think of Sam Grin

boschy · 02/10/2013 13:30

my DM refers to the well known flatpack furniture and life style store as Ick Aye A (a as in cat). Makes me want to kill her.

Book - 'buck' is not the standard English pronunciation, it's quite a minority 'affected' one, which is why I thought an earlier poster was being disingenuous.

Most people pronounce book to rhyme with look, not buck to rhyme with suck. In Liverpool or Stoke they rhyme look with Luke, so there are three different prunciations, that I'd expect anyone living here for a few years to have heard.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/10/2013 15:48

Christmasmum, choritso isn't an Anglicisation, it's an Italianisation to make the z a ts sound. The normal English z sound is fine IMO.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/10/2013 15:50

Badtime, I recently had to explain to my 29-year-old brother the difference between slither and sliver. He had no idea.

LyraSilvertongue · 02/10/2013 15:52

What is the correct pronunciation of croissant? I've never been completely clear on this one.

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 15:55

Lottie-you'd be wrong to expect everyone to know, see my question aboveGrin

MokuMoku · 02/10/2013 15:58

See, Ikea should be pronounced I-kay-ah

Faverolles · 02/10/2013 16:16

Dh takes the piss out of me for my crap pronunciation of croissant (I say crasont - I know it's wrong, but I'm just not sure how to pronounce it correctly and while I'm wandering, crasont slips out)

lottiegarbanzo · 02/10/2013 16:18

But Valium you did know, you recognised the Liverpool example when it was pointed out, didn't you?

Do you really say 'buck' with a true 'u' sound rather than book, so presumably also make a 'bucking' at a restaurant?

I speak with a fairly RP accent, hear lots of other accents regularly and listen to radio 4 a lot and I don't hear anyone say 'buck' for book. It is, as the poster who originally raised it said, an 'over-correction' to something quite stilted and odd. That's why I am incredulous at anyone saying 'how else would you pronounce it?' As book, with a version of an o sound, not a u of course!

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 16:19

I've never heard buck!

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 16:22

Croissant =cra son?

Dawndonnaagain · 02/10/2013 16:27

I don't say tiss yew or iss yew. However, if you take a look at the OED, Sewell (and Fry) have it right.

whogrewoutoftheterribletwos · 02/10/2013 16:28

Fair enough for some folk from a different generation who didn't grow up with the same multicultural influences the rest of us did to mispronounce things. Your DM might not know any better and it's hardly fair to laugh at her for it.

However, there's no excuse for actors on TV. There should be someone pulling them up on pronounciation. My pet hate being 'clique' pronounced 'click'

lottiegarbanzo · 02/10/2013 16:29

Then what were you talking about in the first place Valium?'

DropYourSword said 'I say buck for book', I said 'there are two other commonly used ways of pronouncing book' and you said 'what other ways can book be pronounced?'.

So the obvious inference was you also say 'buck' and wanted to know what other pronunciations there are.

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 16:31

Nooooooooo,I was questioning buck for book and other ways to pronounce it.

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 16:38

If buck = book then do you also say luck for look and tuck for took?Confused

SconeRhymesWithGone · 02/10/2013 16:40

Back to Jaques, I played him in high school (girls' school), and we were
taught to say jay-kweez by our drama teacher.

I can still recite the "all the world's a stage" speech. Smile

noddyholder · 02/10/2013 16:43

How are you all pronouncing croissant. Its kwa-son no?

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 16:46

Unless it's cra sonGrin

lottiegarbanzo · 02/10/2013 16:50

But you didn't question buck. Maybe DropYourSword can help, she's he one who's admitted to using it.

lottiegarbanzo · 02/10/2013 16:51

'The only one'

valiumredhead · 02/10/2013 16:52

I questioned it in my head,I just forgot to type it then got confused Grin

lottiegarbanzo · 02/10/2013 16:57

I have also lost the ability to type!
