To slag off someone else's profession?

E.g. Nurses don't really care about their patients.

Or firefighters just sit on their arses at the station most of the time so why are they whinging?

Or the police are all corrupt.

Actually, all of these opinions are bollocks. But I wouldn't dream of slagging off a profession that I have no proper understanding of, so why do so many people feel the need to slag off the hardworking teachers of this country? GRRRRRR!

Oh, and I mustn't forget vets. They are all rip off merchants who overcharge for doing very little ;)

Firefighters play badminton and darts. A lot. Fact Wink

Security guards are all power hungry failed coppers

Custardo · 30/09/2013 21:44

its all spin bollocks becuase the those professions have some really robust unions.

I wouldnt be a teacher for all the tea in china - becuase i would literally kill the kids you all seem to love.

CeliaFate · 30/09/2013 21:45

When a doctor does a poor job it has far more serious impact!
The trouble is, everyone has been to school and lots of people have children in school so they think they know exactly what the job entails and that it looks easy.
I always say - feel free to apply to become a teacher if it's such a doddle.

CatAmongThePigeons · 30/09/2013 21:45

My examples are all ones I've heard before. Teachers are awesome, I couldn't do the job.

Mawgatron · 30/09/2013 21:45

Not all nurses are doing a good job. Or ambulance drivers. Or firemen, police, shop workers, bin men, social workers, traffic wardens blah blah blah. But there aren't shitloads of threads on mumsnet slagging them off...

I agree, it's bad form. (And I do care about my patients Wink)

Love your honesty Custardo

thebody · 30/09/2013 21:47

well I couldn't be a bovine vet though! all that mud and physical injury. what a heroine. deserves every penny say I. Grin

janey68 · 30/09/2013 21:48

Yes there's no doubt about it, teachers really are targeted on MN. I wonder whether its envy... Personally I'm with custardo- no way could I do it

PennySillin · 30/09/2013 21:48

Oh there are at times Mawgatron I think depending on your profession depends on the threads you notice and click on. I appreciate at the moment there are quite a few teacher bashing threads around at the moment with everything that's going on but us nurses have had our far few as have other professions - still bad form.

PennySillin · 30/09/2013 21:49

fair few

Mawgatron · 30/09/2013 21:49

Thinking about it, my friend's dog died at the vets during a routine operation and then they had to pay the vet for killing the dog. So all vets must be wankers then, right?

Retropear · 30/09/2013 21:50

Bollocks to them being targeted.

There are education forums where posters are encouraged to post re worries etc.

So they do.

Not all teachers and schools are awesome.Hmm

NickNacks · 30/09/2013 21:52

I'm a childminder and I sit on my arse drinking tea whilst the children watch cbeebies all day. I charge £100ph and make £75,000 per annum ;)

MammaTJ · 30/09/2013 21:52

I guess you are a cross teacher. That is allowed. Now leave us student nurses alone!!

BillyBanter · 30/09/2013 21:53

Are all of any profession awesome, retro?

AcidNails · 30/09/2013 21:53

I think because for the most part our professions don't make the headlines - I mean I can't remember the last time engineers were in the spotlight!!

People moan about nurses and police all the time. Not firefighters so much, but then I think most people admire bravery ;-)

BlackeyedSusan · 30/09/2013 21:54

oo can I join in?

how about, dr's only work for a couple of hours that they do their surgery, and they always have a queue.

police traffic officers sit on their rear all day....

cabin crew get to go on lots of holidays as part of their job flying abroad all the time.

office workers sit on their rears all day drinking coffee, chatting and on the internet. they get to go to the loo when they want and never take work home.

echt · 30/09/2013 21:55

Yes, teachers are targeted. I'm sure MNTowers would be able to press a button which would say how many threads have started with slating teachers as their premise, or those that end up that way.

Not that other jobs don't get it in the neck, but the slagging off of teachers is overwhelming. I'm confining my observations only to Chat and AIBU, not the specialist ones.

Retropear · 30/09/2013 21:55

No but you don't see ridiculous posts saying they are.Hmm

I'm a rich farmer. I drive a 4wd to take the kids to school. I poison the countryside with nasty chemicals. Anyone care to ask how much the combine costs? Can you do this with your mouth stuffed full of cheap food? And yes it is cheap - cheaper in fact than the cost of production. Yes, really! What do you think farm subsidies are for!!

claraschu · 30/09/2013 21:59

I always feel that no one is allowed to criticise a school or a teacher on Mumsnet.

In the US, one in 57 doctors lose their licence, but in major US cities only 1 in 1000 teachers get fired for bad performance. Is this because teachers are better trained and more competent than doctors? No, it's because the bad teachers tend to hang on to their jobs, as it is so hard to get rid of them.

My three children have had some wonderful teachers over the years, and some lousy ones, as well as lots who were ok.
