To slag off someone else's profession?

Mawgatron · 30/09/2013 21:39

E.g. Nurses don't really care about their patients.

Or firefighters just sit on their arses at the station most of the time so why are they whinging?

Or the police are all corrupt.

Actually, all of these opinions are bollocks. But I wouldn't dream of slagging off a profession that I have no proper understanding of, so why do so many people feel the need to slag off the hardworking teachers of this country? GRRRRRR!

This isnt my view at all but sometimes I think people get narky at teachers because the perception is they have a lot of holidays and strike when they feel like it. Doctors, nurses, firefighters etc cant strike as it leads to deaths plus when teachers strike its an inconvenience to everyone with kids of school age. I don't think thats fair and everyone should have the right to strike but I can see how perceptions can be wrong.

Mawgatron · 30/09/2013 22:18

My point exactly- there are three current threads slagging off teachers, and the strikes aren't even nationwide! Where were the threads slagging off the fire brigade the other week? It isn't tosh retro, I am calling it as I see it. If you nc regularly and praise teachers then how am I supposed to know it's you?

Why don't you teach any more?

Its a bit lets all race to the bottom rather than lets make it better for everyone iyswim.

Xmasbaby11 · 30/09/2013 22:19

I've noticed that teachers get stick on some of these threads. I think it is the profession that parents come into contact with the most. However, I've also seen many positive threads about parents desperate to know how to spend oodles of cash to buy their darling teachers an Xmas present!

HandMini · 30/09/2013 22:21

Lawyers....sigh. Nobody loves a lawyer. Sad

PennySillin · 30/09/2013 22:21

Maw you have to stop taking it so personally and that's hard to do. I can only speak from how I have felt on threads, the NHS has taken some severe slating on here, nurses & drs especially. I used to get really upset about it but you know what they are not talking about me personally.

I know that I am a good nurse, a really good nurse, (I know that might sound arrogant!) I really genuinely care about my patients and I make sure I do my bit to make my patient's experience of the NHS the most positive I can even in sad and difficult times. Your upset leads me to feel you are as passionate about your profession and you are probably a really good, professional teacher too. Please, take deep breath and don't take it personally. Smile

HandMini · 30/09/2013 22:21

Ps, I am a lawyer.

meditrina · 30/09/2013 22:22

Many professions get slagged off on MN.

It's no worse for teachers than for the others it's done to.

claraschu · 30/09/2013 22:23

I just quoted US figures because they were easier to find on the web.

gordyslovesheep · 30/09/2013 22:23

careers advisers - just tell you to look in a book/on website - fucking useless ...'mine told me to do x.y.z' etc etc

People confuse us with careers TEACHERS and have no clue what we do - especially the SEN legal stuff

blackeyed and Laurie Thank you. I accept this slagging for every maths geek who ever had a dream that one day they too could...... (acceptance speech lasts several minutes and contains several favorite equations.)

For the rest of you:-

An actuary makes financial sense of the future! (According to our website.) We like Very Hard Sums.

Legend has it that actuaries are people who found accountancy too exciting....

Q. How do you spot an extrovert actuary.
A. They stare at the shoes of the person they are talking to.

Mawgatron · 30/09/2013 22:24

I know I do Penni, I just wish people could be a little more supportive of each other. Sigh...

Just out of interest, how do those who are concerned about standards in the teaching profession feel about the increased deregulation in Free schools and academies?

I would have thought that there would be more support for increased regulation, or at least more of a fight against the deregulation given the concerns over (some) teachers' abilities.

Am genuinely interested in opinions.

Talkinpeace · 30/09/2013 22:27

people slag off my profession all the time .... I can live with it.

meditrina · 30/09/2013 22:27

If you want supportive, then AIBU might not be the place to post.

BTW, if you use advance search on terms such as firefighters and strike you'll find various critical threads over several years.

Retropear · 30/09/2013 22:27

Maw been out to have dc.Would have to do the back to teaching thing but want to use the op to do something different, might not get the chance again.

UnexpectedStepmum · 30/09/2013 22:28

I'm a social worker. I divide my time between arbitrarily taking children away from parents because they aren't feeding them enough houmous, and ignoring children being abused because I am too busy reflecting on my own identity as an oppressive societal force. I get a gold plated pension but my holiday allowance is shite so I have no sympathy for teachers, jammy long holidaying, early finishing, biscuit eating gits.

PennySillin · 30/09/2013 22:29

I know, it would be a much nicer place if we could focus on the positive but it's not going to happen - well not overnight anyway!

You know you do a good job (I have 3 DCs at primary school and have never had a duff teacher) all your parents do too, you do what you need to do and don't worry about this anonymous lot! Grin Use mumsnet for fun/advice but not to make you feel sad. I learnt the hard way too. Smile

StarlightMcKenzie · 30/09/2013 22:29

Where are the three current threads slagging off teachers?

tethersend · 30/09/2013 22:31

Unexpected- I am a teacher who works for social services; am I a goody or a baddy? Grin

NumTumDeDum · 30/09/2013 22:33

Tethers, I think that makes you Voldemort Grin
