to feel positively evangelical about electronic cigarettes?

I was reading the AIBU thread about the husband vaping in the house with a newborn. I was struck by the passionate testimonials from former smokers, saying they couldn't have done it without e-cigs. I had tried a puff one of those things that look like a cigarette and was underwhelmed. But I didn't know about the more advanced set ups where you can fill them up with your flavour of choice. Anyway, I was intrigued. I smoked a pack a day for 25 years, and never quit more than a few months at a time, no matter which methods I tried.

nb84 encouraged me to give it a try and told me what to buy to get started.

I ordered a starter kit that night. It arrived the next day and I fell in love. I have three of them, now (one always charging, one near to hand, and one in my purse ready to go) and eight different flavours of the juice.

I don't want to smoke cigarettes any more. I like this better. It tastes really good. It feels good. And it doesn't stink. My hands, clothing, and breath don't reek anymore. I don't have to keep going outside. I don't have to feel like a smelly pariah. My husband can't smell it even when I'm sitting right next to him.

And I don't have to try and not think about the fact that my mother died of cancer after spending her last decade debilitated by emphysema.

And instead of paying £8 a day for fags, I can buy a week's worth of juice for £10. The hardware was less than £20 to get started and will require only £10 a month going forward. Of course, I can spend more. Many people geek out on it as a hobby because the gadgets are fun and constantly improving.

I'm not worried about putting on weight like people usually do when giving up the cancer sticks. In fact, I snack less. I no longer crave sweets. I would normally nibble all day, especially Haribo sweets. I don't want them anymore because I am tasting a bunch of sweet flavours all day long.

I'm so happy that I want to tell everyone - every smoker and everyone who loves a smoker - about it. Grin

I have coffee flavour, gneerlaly, and also Drum, which I think is drum tobacco, though strangely although it says Drum on the website, when it arrived it is called Instrument Grin

thanks to this thread I have now ordered bubblegum and also watermelon,
I hope they are ok.

And here we go:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-24439474

So after this legislation goes through, there will be more safety controls on the manufacturing of e-cigarettes, than tobacco ones! Love the "gateway to smoking" argument too. It's like saying drinking coffee is a gateway to Crystal Meth - totally without foundation.

Meh... It's expected, but still very disappointing. Not sure how they will be able to regulate Cartomisers/Vaporisers either. It's not clear to me whether this regulation just applies to e-cigarettes, as surely vaporizers are too diverse and customisable to regulate?

What I'm worried about, is smaller companies being unable to afford the costs involved in the regulation. There's a risk that the UK-based vaping companies will shut down, and people will instead be supplied by post from the US, China or India.

Thanks Katy, I'll get a couple of the Paradise Vape ones when my current batteries die.

Bombjack · 08/10/2013 09:22

One of the MEPs just now,

"This is no longer just a fight against tobacco, but against addiction".

paradise vape is just one person who has a do it yourself website, no proper web address even, no contact address, which is illegal, and has prob just bought a job lot from a cheap seller from China. vape escape is an established company with a good reputation, (i have no affiliation with them at all.i by the way! apart from having bought from them).

if you buy from micky mouse paradise vape and nothing arrives you Will have no comeback, if your vaper doesn't work, he prob won't want to know, and the eliquid he is selling he could be knocking it up in his garage inaccurately with bad ingredients.

i wouldn't.

KatyTheCleaningLady · 08/10/2013 09:42

The fellow at Paradise is a good guy. It's true that his Web site is crap, but many people buy off him.

That said, I have had excellent service from Vape Escape. I have had to call with questions a few times and they've always been ace.

waikikamookau · 08/10/2013 10:04

and i work with the guy from Vapingvision, that I have linked to previously, so I guess I could get hold of him if needed, but he has an address and mobile number on the website.

birdybear · 08/10/2013 10:05

he can't be a good guy if he isn't following the law for selling online. Why doesn't he have his address on the site? That is a very basic legal requirement. If he takes your money and doesn't provide the goods, how would you, the police or trading standards track him down?

waikikamookau · 08/10/2013 10:06

waikikamookau · 08/10/2013 10:07

www.vapingvision.co.uk/ i mean

KatyTheCleaningLady · 08/10/2013 11:19

My guess is that he's clueless. It hardly makes him evil. I think his website is crap. But many people are curious about trying vaping and don't want to spend a lot of money, so people point them to the cheapest option available. I and many people have bought from him with no problems.
My initial reaction to the site was negative, so I bought the Vision one from Vape Escape that you linked above, myself. I wouldn't blame anyone for doing the same.

But I don't think it's a big risk to order from Paradise.

OP posts:
birdybear · 08/10/2013 11:27

i didn't say he was evil. ignorance of the law is no excuse. if he sets himself up as an online seller, then follow the law! anyway, if you want to risk it, go ahead! Hmm

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 08/10/2013 12:22

I ordered DH's starter kit from Paradise and it's just arrived, along with a 3ml sample of liquid (pomegranate Grin) There's a postal address on the back of the parcel if anybody needs it?

I agree the website is crap and should legally have the postal address on though.

Also some of my new clearos have arrived, phew!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 08/10/2013 12:43

Maggie, my new clearos are gs-h2. So far I like them more than CE4s. I found this really helpful page for solving leaks.

olgaga · 08/10/2013 13:08

Ecigs will not be regulated as medicines! Just heard on radio - decision today.

Fantastic news!Grin

Bombjack · 08/10/2013 13:22

Yep - I was Shock on hearing that! Grin

I'm not sure what will happen in the UK now - will the UK press ahead with national regulation I wonder?

www.mhra.gov.uk/Safetyinformation/Generalsafetyinformationandadvice/Product-specificinformationandadvice/Product-specificinformationandadvice%E2%80%93M%E2%80%93T/NicotineContainingProducts/index.htm

The above link seems to indicate the government was going to regulate under the framework of the EU directive, so not sure.

magimedi · 08/10/2013 13:30

I am delighted to hear that news.

As to the UK govt doing anything about ecigs - I wonder if they have time before the next general election? Also, there are a great many UK jobs (& votes) in the industry so I reckon we are safe for a while.

Badvoc · 08/10/2013 13:36

My mum and sister have not had a cigarette for a week now since the start of stoptober.
My mother had smoked for 45 years.
My sister for 20 years.
My mum had a heart attack due to smoking, and we lost my beloved dad in July directly due to his smoking.
Please, please, please, any of you who smoke, give these things a try.
They could not only change but save your life x

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 08/10/2013 14:12

Brilliant news!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 08/10/2013 14:13

And congratulations to Badvoc's mum and sister Flowers

olgaga · 08/10/2013 15:03

Interesting article about it all in the New York Times.

I think by the time 2016 comes around (which is when the current UK Govt plan to license them as a medicine), the case for ecigarettes will have been well and truly made worldwide.

But I imagine they'll have to replace the £9bn tax revenue from tobacco somehow - 2% of the total tax raised.

Bombjack · 08/10/2013 15:55

As Badvoc movingly says above, get your friends and family vaping!

Now, people can get a bit of enjoyment cheaply, and without the social stigma. The political classes will HATE it Grin

CatelynStark · 08/10/2013 15:59

Fab news - a bit of common sense in Europe for a change Grin

CatelynStark · 08/10/2013 16:00

Oh and I've converted five people so far Grin

magimedi · 08/10/2013 16:02

Catelyn - Well done! I was a smoker for more than 40 years & am now just short of a year of no cigs due to vaping.

And I relate to smoking being party of your identity.

And well done to Badvoc's relations!
