To be irritated by FIL?

My mum has to have a hysterectomy. She is v worried about it and I was upset to hear that she has to have one, even it is quite a common operation.

When I told my ILs, having just got off the telephone from my mum, my FIL seemed to think it was a big joke and said "What's a gearbox between friends?". Apparently, 'gearbox' is slang for a uterus...

He's lovely but not known for his tact... It was probably the timing of his silly comment, but it has irritated me :(

What a foul man.

Maybe he didn't know how to react to your upset so attempted to make light of it, but obviously got it very wrong butthead.
Sorry about your Dm, hope she recovers quickly x

Are you all quite close, then as there's no way I would tell my ILs such a thing about my Mum.

Hope all goes well for your mum.

Pawprint · 24/09/2013 17:52

diddl my mum wanted me to tell my ILs as I might have to look after her. It isn't a secret but I perhaps should have asked dh to tell them rather than announcing it directly.

I think my father-in-law thought it was funny. This is the same man who asked a lady whom he knew was struggling with infertility if she "ever felt broody"

It could be that he was embarrassed & didn't know what to say.

Although if he's not renowned for his tact..

I doubt he thinks the fact of your mum having surgery is a joke-well I hope he doesn't-just didn't know what to say.

I guess it's something I would probably not tell unless I had to.

Pawprint · 24/09/2013 19:38

I agree D he was the last person I wanted to tell, but I did tell him and grrrr at him :( I could say more about him - he's creepy, lechy, rude and awful. I am the only one in the world, it seems, who doesn't think he's odious. He used to try and kiss me on the lips.... Eugh

He sound vile! Just try to ignore him, I hope all goes well for your mother and she soon recovers.

silly old fool. knee him in the bollocks if he tries to kids you in the lips again! what's a brake pad between friends??

hope your mom is ok .Thanks

Pawprint · 25/09/2013 07:55

Thanks all - he is lovely in general but can also be incredibly thoughtless.

He has got some mildly irritating habits. For example, if someone sneezes he always says "Bless you, my child" and makes stupid jokes. Doesn't exactly make him an axe murderer, but it does grate a bit Confused

OP nothing to say on your FIL I think you've summed him up perfectly.

Best wishes for your mum, the operation isn't as bad as she is imagining, if she is online can I recommend the following website for advice and support www.hysterectomy-association.org.uk

Lovely or creepy, lechy, rude and awful? They don't sound consistent. I think it was a poor joke. If you know he's tactless I'd avoid telling him anything sensitive as he'll only upset you.
